Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Four out of five listeners agree that they smile when they hear "Mr. Blue Sky." Who makes them smile?

Answer: ELO

Jeff Lynne and company sure had a good run in the 70s and "Mr. Blue Sky" is a fine example of their talent. The song originally appeared on the 1977 release of "Out Of The Blue" and is featured on numerous greatest hits. Interestingly, the song appeared during the commercials and soundtrack for "Enternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind," but the song did not actually appear in the movie.
2. "___ _______ and me staring at the video. When I look at the television, I want to see me staring right back at me. We all want to be big stars, but we don't know why and we don't know how." This "Mr." song put the Counting Crows on the map. Do you remember the title?

Answer: Mr. Jones

The 1993 release of "August And Everything After" is where you'll find "Mr. Jones." The Counting Crows were nominated for an Academy Award for their original song "Accidentally In Love," which can be heard in "Shrek 2."
3. "And here's to you, Mrs. Robinson Jesus loves you more than you will know (woo, woo, woo)." Who sings about the adventures of "Mrs. Robinson" and "Joltin Joe?"

Answer: Simon and Garfunkel

"Mrs. Robinson" was written for the movie, "The Graduate." In the early 90s, The Lemonheads did a nice cover of this song.
4. "Miss Misery" is played at the end of this movie as we watch the protaganist drive from Harvard to Stanford in search of his love. "I gotta see about a girl," he states. The film won two Academy Awards in 1998. Can you name the film?

Answer: Good Will Hunting

"Miss Misery" was performed by Elliott Smith. "Good Will Hunting" includes several other Elliott Smith songs. Elliott was nominated for Best Original Song, but lost to Celine Dion's "My Heart Will Go On."
5. "___ _______, you've got a lovely daughter" sings Peter Noone and the rest of Herman's Hermits. Whose daughter are they referring to?

Answer: Mrs. Brown

Peter was only 16 when asked to join the group. The sound doesn't differ too much from other British Invasion bands: The Hollies, Gerry and the Pacemakers and The Seekers. Herman's Hermits had 16 Top 20 singles between 1964-1970.
6. "Mr. Sandman, bring me a dream (bung, bung, bung, bung) Make him the cutest that I've ever seen (bung, bung, bung, bung) Give him two lips like roses and clover (bung, bung, bung, bung) Then tell him that his lonesome nights are over." "Mr. Sandman," who sang this song? (bung, bung, bung, bung)

Answer: The Chordettes

The Chordettes performed from 1946 - 1961. "Mr. Sandman" was a hit in 1954 and went to #1 for seven weeks. The song was featured prominently in "Halloween II" and still gives me nightmares.
7. We've all heard the lovely 12-string Rickenbacker on the Byrd's classic, "Mr. Tambourine Man," but who wrote the song?

Answer: Bob Dylan

"Mr. Tambourine Man" went to #1 in 1965 and can be found on Bob Dylan's "Bringing It All Back Home."
8. "I'm Miss World, watch me break and watch me burn No one is listening, my friend." "Miss World" can be found on this band's breakthough album, "Live Through This." The album also featured the single, "Doll Parts," and was a commercial success in 1994.

Answer: Hole

Given the Courtney Love/Kurt Cobain relationship, it's not surprising that "Live Through This" resembles the Nirvana sound. The album was released within weeks of Kurt Cobain's death and a number of the songs seem to unknowningly predict his demise.
9. "Me and Mrs. Jones We got a thing goin'on We both know that it's wrong But it's much too strong To let it go now." "Me and Mrs. Jones" topped the charts in 1972. Who sang this classic R&B delight?

Answer: Billy Paul

Billy started recording in Philadelphia in the 50s and has worked with Miles Davis, Roberta Flack and Charlie Parker. "Me and Mrs. Jones" can be found on his 1972 release, "360 Degrees of Billy Paul," which also features a cover of Elton John's "Your Song."
10. "Beatles for Sale" is a greatly overlooked album and features the classics: "Eight Days a Week," "No Reply" and "I'm a Loser." The Beatles were still recording covers at this point and "Beatles for Sale" includes the song, "Mr. ____________."
