M*A*S*H - Characters and Actors Trivia Questions

1. In "Your Hit Parade", how does Radar keep up morale for MASH 4077 during a long surgical stint?

From Quiz
Radar Love Is A Many Splendored Thing

Answer: Acts as DJ for the camp

Using new records he received and Winchester's record player, Radar acted as DJ for the camp playing music 24/7. Colonel Potter's favorite song was "Sentimental Journey" until he heard the song twenty-three times and then decided it was no longer his favorite song. "Your Hit Parade" was the nineteenth episode of season six.

2. He appeared in "Requiem for a Lightweight" and "Chief Surgeon Who?," the 3rd and 4th episodes of season 1, both times as General Barker. He would later become famous as Boss Hogg on "The Dukes of Hazzard."

From Quiz "M*A*S*H" Guest Stars, Part 2

Answer: Sorrell Booke

Booke worked in TV and film for more than 25 years before landing the role of the gluttonous and corrupt commissioner of Hazzard County.

3. He played wounded Private Paul Conway in season 8's opening episode "Too Many Cooks," in which the staff of the 4077th want to keep him around for his cooking abilities. Later he played Dr. Victor Ehrlich on "St. Elsewhere."

From Quiz "M*A*S*H" Guest Stars, Pt. 1

Answer: Ed Begley Jr.

Begley Jr. received six consecutive Emmy nominations for his work on "St. Elsewhere."

4. In Dr. Freedman's first 'M*A*S*H' appearance, what is his first name?

From Quiz 'M*A*S*H' - Major Sidney Freedman

Answer: Milton

In the episode "Radar's Report" that first aired on September 29, 1973, Sidney's first name is "Milton". Dr. Freedman is summoned to the 4077 to assess Klinger's mental state. The doctor finds him to be sane, but tells Klinger that he is willing to say in his report that Klinger is a transvestite and a homosexual. This would get Klinger out of the Army but the stigma would stay with him for life. "From now on, you go through life on high heels," Freedman tells Klinger. Klinger refuses, saying "I ain't any of those things! I'm just crazy!" And so much for Klinger's discharge! In subsequent episodes, Freedman's first name is Sidney, not Milton, and no explanation is ever given for the change.

5. The only character to appear in all 251 episodes of the series was Benjamin Franklin Pierce. Who played this iconic character?

From Quiz "M*A*S*H" Personnel

Answer: Alan Alda

Alan Alda played Captain "Hawkeye" Pierce, a surgeon who enjoyed pulling an occasional prank on his fellow surgeons. He was also big on drinking and womanizing. He balanced the chaos of the war with jokes. Hawkeye was played by Donald Sutherland in the 1970 movie. Alan Alda is also known for his roles in "What Women Want", "The Aviator", and "Tower Heist". He has also made guest appearances on television show such as "The Big C" and "The Blacklist".

6. Beloved, goofy Colonel Blake ran the 4077 until the end of season 3. What happened to him?

From Quiz The Whys Behind the Goodbyes

Answer: Discharged and shot down over the sea of Japan

The world of American television in 1975 was much different than today. With just three major networks on TV, Americans generally watched the same shows and became very attached to the characters and storylines. That's why Red Shirts were killed off on "Star Trek", not Captain Kirk, Mr. Spock, etc. So the last few minutes of Henry's last episode were shocking to everyone, including most of the cast. If you are a true "M*A*S*H*" fan, you probably know these words by heart: "I have a message. Lieutenant Colonel... Henry Blake's plane... was shot down... over the Sea of Japan. It spun in... there were no survivors." -- Corporal Radar O'Reilly According to Biography Channel's "The Truth Behind the Sitcom Scandals", McLean Stevenson had been unhappy that Alan Alda's character of Hawkeye seemed to be becoming the show's star, instead of it remaining more of an ensemble. He complained frequently, and, because of the bad blood, the producers of the show killed off his character so he couldn't return.

7. The first time we meet Klinger, he is dressed in drag, appearing on "M*A*S*H" in a small one episode part. What episode was this?

From Quiz Maxwell Q Klinger

Answer: Chief Surgeon Who?

Klinger was originally written as a one episode part, but after his performance in "Chief Surgeon Who?" from season 1, he was asked back for different episodes in season 1 and 2, and was made a main character in season 3. Klinger is first seen in the nude, after General Barker discovered him in that state, performing guard duty.

8. Who played the part of Max Klinger?

From Quiz Characters of "M*A*S*H"

Answer: Jamie Farr

Jamie Farr was originally hired as a "day player", booked for the day without a future commitment to the show, until the 3rd season when he finally secured a contract. Also the dog tags that he wears during the show are his real dog tags from when he served as part of the US Army in Korea during the 1950s, but after the war was over.

9. What is Hawkeye's shoe size?

From Quiz "M*A*S*H*" Personnel Files

Answer: 10 1/2 C

Hawkeye was only 10 when his mother died.

10. Henry Blake's wife was named Lorraine, or at least that's what he called her when he spoke to her on the telephone. However, during an episode in the first season, by what name did he refer to her?

From Quiz 'M*A*S*H' - Character Goofs

Answer: Mildred

Some fans have speculated that Henry's wife's name includes both Lorraine and Mildred, perhaps Mildred Lorraine Blake, or vice-versa. Regardless, after the first season, we never hear the name Mildred in reference to his wife again.

11. Everyone at the 4077th called him 'Radar' because he seemed to have the extraordinary ability to both read people's minds and anticipate future events. But what was the given birthname of Corporal Radar O'Reilly?

From Quiz 'M*A*S*H' - 'Radar' O'Reilly

Answer: Walter

His real name is Walter, something he mentions to Captain Chandler (aka Jesus Christ) in the episode 'Quo Vadis, Captain Chandler?' Incidentally, his middle name is Eugene.

12. What able actor brought the loveable and very goofy Henry Blake to the small screen, for the television show 'M*A*S*H'?

From Quiz 'M*A*S*H' - Henry Blake

Answer: McLean Stevenson

In the 1970 movie 'MASH', Henry Blake was portrayed by Roger Bowen. McLean Stevenson, who had established himself on Broadway, as well as in TV writing, played Blake on TV beginning in 1972. Stevenson died on February 15, 1996, and Bowen died the day after him, on February 16.

13. Frank Burns was an integral part of of the first several seasons of 'M*A*S*H', after all, someone had to be the butt of Hawkeye, Trapper and BJ's jokes! What actor expertly played the no-lipped, chin-challenged Frank Burns?

From Quiz 'M*A*S*H' - Frank Burns

Answer: Larry Linville

Larry Linville claimed that playing Frank Burns was the toughest role on 'M*A*S*H' because he had to constantly struggle to make such a nitwit of a character seem real and human. Larry Linville was born in 1939 in Ojai, California. Sadly, he passed away in 2000, only 60 years old at the time.

14. Here's a meat and potatoes question to begin. Which actor lovingly played the generous and thoughtful BJ Hunnicut on the television show 'M*A*S*H'?

From Quiz 'M*A*S*H' - BJ Hunnicut

Answer: Mike Farrell

Fans of 'M*A*S*H' were stunned to discover that Wayne Rogers, aka Trapper John, had left the show after its third season. The sting of his loss was soothed however by the arrival of BJ Hunnicut, and fans soon learned to love this very moral and often mischievous new character played by Mike Farrell. Something you may not know about Mike Farrell. His first film appearance was in a bit part in the 1967 film 'The Graduate'. His most well-known work following his stint on 'M*A*S*H' has perhaps been on the television drama 'Providence' as Dr. James Hansen. He has also become quite famous for his political activism.

15. What was Frank's rank while he was at the 4077th?

From Quiz "M*A*S*H"- Frank Burns

Answer: Major

I'll never understand why the army made Frank a Major. Maybe it was because he was so gung-ho! If you recall, Frank was promoted to Lt. Colonel and sent stateside after Margaret got married and he went crazy.

16. Which famous actor/director played Private Wendell Peterson in the episode "Sometimes You Hear The Bullet"?

From Quiz "M*A*S*H"- Guest Stars

Answer: Ron Howard

Hawkeye noticed how young Wendell looked and asked Wendell how old he was, to which Wendell replied, "21, sir". When it appeared that Hawkeye wasn't buying Wendell's reply, Wendell then stated that he was really 18,to which Hawkeye replied, "For someone who's both 21 and 18, you look awfully 16 to me". Hawkeye later discovered that Wendell's name was really Walter and that he had used Wendell's birth certificate so that he could join the army and become a hero in order to impress his ex-girlfriend back home; she dumped Walter when a boy named Auggie came back from boot camp!

17. Major Charles Emerson Winchester III was brought on the television show 'M*A*S*H' to replace the beloved Frank Burns. During which season of the show did Charles first appear?

From Quiz 'M*A*S*H' - Charles Emerson Winchester III

Answer: 6th

Charles Emerson Winchester III first appeared in the 6th season episode entitled 'Fade In, Fade Out'. Frank Burn's last appearance was in the 5th season episode entitled 'Margaret's Wedding'. Winchester immediately found himself in Frank's place in more ways than one. Not only did he replace him as a surgeon, he also replaced him as a rival to Hawkeye and BJ. Charles brought a certain sophistication and panache that Frank lacked...bringing a different feel to the rivalry than had previously existed.

18. What is Sherman Potter's rank?

From Quiz "M*A*S*H"- Sherman Potter

Answer: Colonel

Remember when he called himself "bird colonel"?

19. To begin, I shall ask a few easy questions in order to bolster your quiz scores (presuming you know your Hawkeye!). What is the name of the small town in Maine that serves as home for Hawkeye?

From Quiz 'M*A*S*H' - B. F. 'Hawkeye' Pierce

Answer: Crabapple Cove

Some interesting facts about Crabapple Cove: It doesn't exist in 'real life'!
