'M*A*S*H' - Henry Blake Trivia Quiz

One of my two favorite colonels from the TV show 'M*A*S*H', Henry Blake entertained fans of the show for several seasons before Colonel Potter arrived as his eventual replacement. How much do you know about Henry? Good luck!

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What able actor brought the loveable and very goofy Henry Blake to the small screen, for the television show 'M*A*S*H'?

Answer: McLean Stevenson

In the 1970 movie 'MASH', Henry Blake was portrayed by Roger Bowen. McLean Stevenson, who had established himself on Broadway, as well as in TV writing, played Blake on TV beginning in 1972. Stevenson died on February 15, 1996, and Bowen died the day after him, on February 16.
2. Though everyone usually referred to Henry as 'Colonel', in fact his rank was lieutenant colonel during his run on the TV show.

Answer: True

Indeed, unlike Sherman Potter, who was a full 'bird' colonel, Henry Blake wore the clusters of a lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army.
3. Henry Blake was proud of his home state, where he attended school at the state university. What state would this be?

Answer: Illinois

Henry often had orange and blue paraphernalia from the University of Illinois. His hometown in Illinois is Bloomington, which is right next door to Normal, Illinois, where his wife was the 'Succotash Queen'.
4. Like many individuals at the 4077th, Henry had his middle name mentioned during the run of the TV show. What was his unusual middle name?

Answer: Braymore

The Henry Blake character, as with most of the other major characters from the movie and TV series, was invented by Richard Hornberger, aka Richard Hooker, who wrote the novel 'M*A*S*H: A Novel About Three Army Doctors'.
5. Henry was very fond of his wife, a loving woman and devoted mother. What was the name of this lovely lady who actually appeared in a home movie in the season two episode 'Dear Dad...Three'?

Answer: Lorraine

She was originally called 'Mildred', but her name was changed inexplicably to Lorraine later on. In the episode 'Dear Dad...Three', Lorraine is portrayed by actress Kathleen Hughes in a home movie. This was her only appearance on the show.
6. Henry Blake often mentioned his children on the show, and was seen speaking to several of them at different occasions. What was the name of the son he speaks to on the phone in one episode?

Answer: Andrew

The names revealed for Henry's children are Andrew, a son, and Molly and Janie, his two daughters. Henry's wife also appears to have another son in an early 'M*A*S*H' episode, so technically it seems that he should have four kids, but this is never clarified.
7. In one episode, Henry's mother's name is mentioned. Is it true that his mother's name is Margaret?

Answer: Yes

Indeed, Henry's mother shares her name with Margaret Houlihan, aka Hot Lips. There was no indication as to whether or not Henry's mother also shared the nickname Hot Lips, but somehow I doubt it.
8. Sadly, Henry Blake did not last long on the TV series 'M*A*S*H', departing at the end of the third season. What was the memorable final episode featuring Henry Blake entitled?

Answer: Abyssinia, Henry

McLean Stevenson apparently wanted out, not realizing what a huge hit 'M*A*S*H' would go on to be. The last words we hear from Henry Blake are these, to Radar: 'You behave yourself, or I'm gonna come back and kick your butt.'
9. Henry Blake tragically dies on his way back to the states after being discharged from the army. Over what body of water does Henry's plane crash?

Answer: Sea of Japan

Here's the message a white-faced and tearful Radar O'Reilly delivered to the staff at the 4077th: 'I have a message. Lt Col. Henry Blake's plane was shot down over the Sea of Japan. It spun in. There were no survivors.' Even typing it brings a tear to my eye.
10. All was not lost, however. The following night after Henry Blake's last episode on 'M*A*S*H', he showed up on what TV show in a small raft saying 'I'm okay! I'm okay!'?

Answer: Cher

And I leave you with one more classic quote from Henry Blake that basically says it all about his character: 'Whatever it is, even if the answer is yes, it's no.' (From the first season episode 'Requiem For A Lightweight', a quote directed at Trapper and Hawkeye.'

Thanks for playing this quiz, I hope you enjoyed it!
