Wednesday eventually learns that the left foot had been cut off by the medical examiner rather than the monster who had only cut off two toes on that foot. Wednesday learns that the Nightshades kicked out Rowan Laslow shortly before he attempted to kill Wednesday and was then killed by a monster.

To make things worse for Wednesday, while she is talking to Sheriff Galpin, Rowan Laslow seemingly appears in the flesh having returned to Nevermore Academy. Wednesday has to tell him several times that she is watching the bees for a friend and that they are not to be eaten.

Wednesday's expulsion prompts her mother and father, Morticia and Gomez, to send her to Nevermore Academy, a school for individuals with special powers. Although it's not explicitly stated in the first episode, the name of the school is likely a reference to the Edgar Alan Poe short story "The Raven" in which the title character says the word 'nevermore' numerous times.

Although Wednesday didn't admit that she had friends, many of the other students are sad to see that Wednesday was to be expelled, especially her roommate Enid Sinclair.

Uncle Fester tells Wednesday that the monster is known as a Hyde and Wednesday connects the name to the novella "Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" that was written by Robert Louis Stevenson in 1886. Similar to that story, the Hyde terrorizing the town of Jericho has a human host that can turn into a monster when a traumatic event occurs but eventually the Hyde can come out when the host desires and do the host's bidding.

Wednesday enters Crackstone's Crypt at midnight and finds that her classmates have thrown a surprise 16th birthday party for her. Rather than celebrate her birthday, Wednesday decides to look for clues while she is in the crypt.

Larissa was also jealous of the success that Morticia had at school and whenever she felt on top Morticia always managed to cut her down (like a lumberjack) unintentionally.

Sometimes when Xavier draws something it comes to life. One of his monster drawings actually came to life and scratched him on the neck.

Thing eventually loses Rowan's trail after he enters a train station bathroom and somehow transforms into Principal Weems.
