The next camera shot shows an arm belonging to someone outside the frame gripping and shooting a handgun.

However, a witness claims to have seen Larry leaving Cindy's apartment around the time of the murder. This case marks the first appearance of Phoenix Wright, his mentor Mia Fey, his friend Larry Butz, prosecutor Winston Payne and the Judge.

Before seeing him in court, the player is told that Manfred von Karma is a legendary prosecutor who Phoenix Wright has no chance against. Von Karma's career has gone on for forty years, during which it is said he has never lost a case in court.

Newspaper salesman Frank Sahwit claims he saw Larry leave Cindy's apartment at 1:00 p.m. and knows the exact time because he heard the television announce such. However, the autopsy places Cindy's death much later at 4:00 p.m. In addition, Sahwit said he phoned in the death from a phone box because there was a power outage and he could not use the phone in Cindy's apartment. Phoenix contradicts him by saying a power outage would also mean the TV would not work. Indeed, the power outage is confirmed.

Maya is taken into custody by Gumshoe after finding a note written in blood in Mia's hand. This note says the word "Maya" on it, thus giving Gumshoe reason to believe that Maya committed the crime and Mia was writing a note to incriminate her killer before dying.
