Link's Awakening (DX)
"Link's Awakening" was the first "Legend of Zelda" game to be released on the Game Boy system, and it instantly became a classic. With new bosses, weapons, and areas, the game was much different from the prior installment ("Adventures of Link") and a step up from the first game in the series. In 1998, Nintendo released the "DX" version of the game for the Game Boy Color. This version gave players a hidden dungeon, and a game seen entirely in color.
"The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening" and "The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DX" are for the Nintendo Game Boy systems.

From Quiz ""Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening" 2"

Link's Awakening (DX) Trivia Questions

1. Once you have the Dungeon Map, dungeon traveling becomes much easier. Which dungeon requires you to enter rooms NOT on the map?

From Quiz
The Mysteries of Koholint

Answer: Face Shrine

The stone slab hints at this with the strange riddle: "enter the space where the eyes have walls". If you look at the map, the rooms make up a face (hence the name "Face Shrine"). The "eyes" of the face are invisible rooms. Utilizing these invisible rooms, you'll find access to the L2 Power Bracelet.

2. After defeating Eagle's Tower, Link trudges west to Turtle Rock, toting the hefty Mirror Shield. Who does Link save in Tal Tal Heights on his way to Turtle Rock?

From Quiz "Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening" 4

Answer: Marin

You may have saved Papal earlier, but he was not on the way to Turtle Rock. Marin is stuck in the middle of a dilapidated bridge that Link can only cross with the hookshot. How she got there is beyond me, but she definitely needs a little rescuing. Call 911 and...wait, rescuing is Link's *job*. I want to see this in 3-D someday. Link hookshots across and picks up Marin as he flies by. He's just getting the "my hero" speech when Tarin appears and spoils the moment by taking Marin home. After this event, Marin worries about the future and makes Link promise never to forget her.

3. In Angler's Tunnel, Link got the flippers and learned how to swim. This wonderful skill allows him to do many things, but it does NOT help him do what?

From Quiz "Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening" 3

Answer: Enter Face Shrine

Swimming will not get you into Face Shrine; you need a bow, some arrows, and a secret passage for that. You have to swim to visit Manbo in the cave to the left of Angler's Tunnel. (His cave is the one with two fishes engraved on the outer walls.) If you have the ocarina, enjoy a music lesson with the Manbo and the two little fish; you can use the song to warp to Manbo's Pond by Crazy Tracy's. If you play the song in a dungeon, you will warp to the safety of that dungeon's entrance. You have to swim to Catfish's Maw and dive underwater to pass the reef to get to the entrance. To make it fairly obvious, a special niche in the reef marks the underwater passage. You have to swim to find someone to take the fishhook in the trading sequence. The trade for the necklace is well hidden, but if you read the owl statues instead of ignoring them, one will tell Link that secrets are like water under bridges... You typically can't swim under a bridge, but this one is special. The "camera angle" drops to the side while you talk to the fisherman. He sees the fishhook, tells you he'll swap his next catch for it, and pulls in a necklace. How on earth...? Take the necklace to the Mermaid who keeps popping up in the bay. When you return the lost necklace to her, you get one of her scales-and the trading sequence is *finally* over! Now all you need is the hookshot...

4. After beating Key Cavern, Link finds Tarin up to more trouble. What will Link get out of this encounter if he hands over the stick?

From Quiz "Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening" 2

Answer: Honeycomb

Honeycomb and a load of laughs. Link picked up a stick that Kiki left behind, but he has no practical use for it. When Tarin asks for the stick, Link hands it over. Sit back and watch a low IQ at work! Tarin approaches the object on the rock and prods it several times with the stick. When bees swarm from the hive, Tarin runs wildly around the screen a few times before running away and taking all the bees with him. Link then receives the honeycomb without a single sting to pay for it. :)

5. Link has set off on another quest. What is the purpose of his adventure in "Link's Awakening?"

From Quiz "Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening" 1

Answer: To improve his skill

This information is found in the booklet that comes with the game. My game was second hand, so I feel your pain if you didn't have the owner's manual either. Link has been traveling to improve his skills and is returning to Hyrule on a ship in the opening scene.

6. When you reach the mysterious forest, Kaepora tells you to get the Tail Key. Why can't you reach the chest with the Key from the eastern door?

From Quiz Early "Link's Awakening"

Answer: pitfalls

You could be able to come from the eastern side, but you don't have the Roc's Feather yet. The raccoon (Tarin) guards the southern path.

7. At the beginning, Link is shipwrecked in a storm and a girl finds him on the beach. Who is she?

From Quiz "Link's Awakening"

Answer: Marin

In this world, she is Marin. Her father is Tarin. Tarin suffers from bad judgement and falls victim to goofy mishaps, such as a transformation and a swarm of bees. The characters Malon and Talon exist in "Ocarina of Time," and the Malon look-a-likes Romani and Cremia are in "Majora's Mask." Link calls Marin "Zelda," when he first wakes up, but she corrects him.

8. It is possible for Link to steal items from a certain shop. However, if he returns to that shop, what will happen?

From Quiz Let's Play 27: "Zelda: Link's Awakening"

Answer: The shop keeper will kill Link with a bolt of lightning

Apparently Koholint Island believes in capital punishment. The judgment is swift. As soon as Link enters the shop, the shop keeper will call you a thief and then promptly kill you with a bolt of lightning. The best thing to steal is the shovel, as it costs 999 rupees. Also, after Link steals whatever particular item he wants, he is rebranded in game as "Thief", and all NPCs refer to him as such.

9. "Fill all the holes with the rock that rolls". This is part of the stone slab message to one of the dungeons. Which dungeon does this riddle belong to?

From Quiz The Mysteries of Koholint

Answer: Turtle Rock

Within Turtle Rock are special rocks that can be pushed and then controlled with the directional pad. Using this rock, you must fill in all the holes. This either gives you a new path or a new item, depending on the map you're doing it in.

10. After an amazingly easy rescue, Link continues on his way to Turtle Rock and explores an area he couldn't reach without the Mirror Shield. Why couldn't he get near Turtle Rock before beating Eagle's Tower?

From Quiz "Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening" 4

Answer: Fireballs

The passageway in the mountain cave is guarded by a gun that shoots fireballs. Not very nice of them, was it? If Link tries this before Level 7, he'll be roasted at this dead end. In Eagle's Tower, Link secures the Mirror Shield, a much larger, sturdier shield about two or three times the size of the regular shield. The Mirror Shield deflects lasers and fireballs, but it looks heavy.

11. Link enters Catfish's Maw and begins to look for this dungeon's essential weapon/item. Where does he find the item of Catfish's Maw?

From Quiz "Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening" 3

Answer: In an enemy

Link faces off with a tremendously annoying pile of bones. The monster's blows are devastating, but if Link is quick enough to dodge, he'll have it easy. Hack at the skeletal warrior, and you turn him into a literal pile of bones, but you don't damage him. Collapse him *and* plant a bomb in the pile, and you're winning! If you stick close to the blast zone and jump in swinging, you can keep the enemy falling apart. The warrior jumps back, whines about losing, and disappears. Link proceeds to the next room, assuming that he has beaten the mini-boss...only to find that the bony loser has taken off with the prize!

12. What causes the shipwreck so that gets Link lost?

From Quiz "Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening" 1

Answer: Lightning

In the introduction, you see a powerful storm crackling with lightning in the background. Link is holding on to the mast and rigging when a bolt of lightning hits the ship directly. Next thing you know, he's washed up on shore.

13. What is Kaepora the owl's last name?

From Quiz Early "Link's Awakening"

Answer: Gaebora

He gives you many hints throughout the game. If you need a hint, Kaepora is who you want. (Or the Phone Booth guy). Kaepora is part of the Windfish's spirit.

14. Once Link retrieves his sword, he can begin a trading sequence essential to the game. What item begins this sequence?

From Quiz "Link's Awakening"

Answer: Yoshi doll

If you ignore it here, you will get stuck before level three! With his sword and a few rupees, Link can win a Yoshi doll for the baby. Yes, it all begins with one small act of kindness. :) Cojiro the blue rooster is part of the trading sequence in "Ocarina of Time," and the Moustache comes from "Oracle of Ages." The stick is an item later in this game.

15. "The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening" is full of allusions and cameos from the Mario series. A large number of Mario enemies appear in the game. What boss from "Super Mario Bros. 2" who appears in "Link's Awakening" must Link battle?

From Quiz Let's Play 27: "Zelda: Link's Awakening"

Answer: Fryguy

Fryguy, referenced in the game as Hothead, is the boss of Turtle Rock. Wart also appears in "Link's Awakening" under his Japanese name Mamu. However, Wart is not an enemy in this game actually teaches Link a melody on his Ocarina. In the game manual to "Super Mario Bros. 2", Wart creates Fryguy from fire. However, it appears in "Link's Awakening" Fryguy is no longer under Wart's control.

16. In one dungeon, you must fight the sub-boss four times. What is the key to determining the order of the rooms he'll appear in?

From Quiz The Mysteries of Koholint

Answer: The number of blocks

In the first room you meet the sub-boss, there is one block in the room. There are other identical rooms throughout the dungeon. One has two blocks, one has three, and one has four. Finding the sub-boss's next location is as easy as memorizing a spot on the map.

17. How many times must Link fight the mini-boss of Catfish's Maw?

From Quiz "Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening" 3

Answer: Four

The lousy coward runs away three times and finally surrenders the fourth time. Link has better things to do than run back and forth through the dungeon chasing a scaredy-cat- Wait! I guess he doesn't- He *must* get that hookshot! The rooms in which the skeleton appears are numbered in order by how many corners have blocks in them. The last room is not far from the entrance, just straight left and through the stairways. When you find him, watch his heavy sword, topple his fragile form, and blow him to bits!

18. Link needs to explore Yarna Desert to find the Angler Key, but there is a very large obstacle in his path to the desert. What stands in Link's way to Yarna Desert?

From Quiz "Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening" 2

Answer: Giant walrus

A giant walrus slumbers in the pathway, and he will not move for Link. The walrus is dreaming about Marin (it's obvious by the little pictures of her) Link returns to Animal Village for help and the animals talk about Marin quite a bit. The big "baker bear" will trade the honeycomb for a pineapple, and then tell Link that Marin can wake the walrus up in a hurry. After coming all this way, Link has to go all the way back... Remember to take the warp-jump to Ukuku Prairie to cut time.

19. Marin finds Link lying on the beach and takes him to her house. After tossing and turning in his sleep, he wakes up and sees her standing by the bed. What does Link say to Marin when he wakes up?

From Quiz "Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening" 1

Answer: He calls her Zelda.

You don't see his words in a dialogue box, but Marin certainly knows what he said. In the games, Link is a soft-spoken young man of few words; he often gives his name and short answers. When he wakes up from a very troubled sleep, he looks over at Marin and calls her Zelda. She says she has no idea what he's talking about; she is Marin. Perhaps those bad dreams had Zelda in them? Maybe Marin looks like Zelda to Link.

20. Name the instrument you get after beating Moldorm in Tail Cave.

From Quiz Early "Link's Awakening"

Answer: Full Moon Cello

Moldorm required 4 hits with the level 1 sword. You must strike his tail and only his tail. An annoying thing is when he knocks you into the pit surrounding his lair.

21. What are the dungeon bosses called in "Link's Awakening?"

From Quiz "Link's Awakening"

Answer: Nightmares

The game is called "Link's Awakening" for a reason... Is Link fighting the nightmare of his life as a hero? Although The Wind Fish had nightmares also, the monsters began to act up when Link washed in. Fortunately for Link, the future is bright!

22. The relationship of the Wind Fish to the people of Koholint Island is rather puzzling. What dungeon contains the most information regarding the Wind Fish?

From Quiz Let's Play 27: "Zelda: Link's Awakening"

Answer: The Southern Face Shrine

Although never explicitly stated, it is implied the inhabitants of Koholint Island do not know about the Wind Fish, nor that they are part of a dream world. When Link asks a boy in the game regarding how they came to the Island, the boy acts confused. The southern Face Shrine contains a mural of the Wind Fish, stating to wake the Wind Fish will end the existence of the Island. The Owl and possibly Marin know of the Wind Fish and its implications on their reality, and Marin can be found Tal Tal Mountain range.

23. Turtle Rock is full of locked doors and narrow pathways that force Link to detour, bomb walls, and watch his step. What new and painful hazard greets Link in the rooms of Turtle Rock?

From Quiz "Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening" 4

Answer: Bubbling lava

When Link fell into water before he could swim, he did not get hurt. If Link falls into lava, he does get hurt. (Joy.) There are even some places where you can fall in just by walking through a door and not stopping fast enough. Watch your step and be extra careful when attacked by enemies-Link doesn't like to be roasted.

24. Link is collecting the Instruments from each of the dungeons of Koholint, hoping to wake the Windfish once he has all eight. What is the name of the key item of Catfish's Maw?

From Quiz "Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening" 3

Answer: Wind Marimba

It has a nice sound to it-"Wind Marimba!" The other instruments are the cello, drum, bell, triangle, flute, harp, and horn. You can listen to their combined music by climbing up to the Windfish's Egg and playing his ballad on the ocarina. The magic instruments pop out and play themselves, but nothing else happens unless you have the complete set.

25. Marin is the talented singer of Mabe Village, and she is often asked to sing "Ballad of the Windfish." What is Marin's dream in life?

From Quiz "Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening" 2

Answer: To travel to distant places

By asking around Mabe Village, Link finds out Marin has gone to the beach. When he finds her in the cove farthest to the right, she wants to sit and talk for a while. She gets sentimental and talks about Tarin's belief that there is nothing beyond the sea. She had always hoped otherwise, and now she wants to hear all about Link and his adventures... She gets really embarrassed that she blurted it out. She also said that she wants to travel far away and sing for other people. If you missed this, you skipped the dialogue and then told her you paid attention. Link quickly changes the topic from her embarrassment to the walrus.

26. Tarin gives Link the shield, and calls Link by name. How does he know Link's name?

From Quiz "Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening" 1

Answer: He saw it on the shield.

Link apparently said something again or gave Tarin a strange look, because Tarin laughs and points out the name on the back of the shield. Link happily reclaims his shield and remembers that he can "fillip" enemies with it. I thought this word was misspelled, but it means "a slight goad or incentive; a small stimulus." (American Heritage College Dictionary) Basically, he can bounce enemies out of the way without getting hurt if he uses it.

27. What is the name of dungeon 2?

From Quiz Early "Link's Awakening"

Answer: Bottle Grotto

It is a fairly short and easy dungeon which has a lot of keys. One hard part is when you need to destroy the three enemies in the correct order.

28. The clue in Bottle Grotto mentions the Pols Voice. What is a Pols Voice?

From Quiz "Link's Awakening"

Answer: Monster that looks like a bunny

The Monster with a cloak is called Stalfos. The one with a "sombrero" is a wizrobe. The water-spiders are tektites. The little bunny-hopper thing is a Pols Voice. Pols Voice are killed by throwing something at them. (Use the Harp of Ages in "Oracle of Ages." It works!) Because my game was a hand-me-down, I had no clue what either Pols Voice or Stalfos were! I finally figured it out when I realized "imprisoned" was the key word.

29. The Nightmare at the Eagle's Tower has one attack that will probably cause more grief than harm. If the Evil Eagle blows you off of the battlefield, what happens?

From Quiz The Mysteries of Koholint

Answer: You have to start the fight over

If you fail to use your shield to block the wind, Link will go flying off the battlefield and land on the level below. Unfortunately, this means that all damage the Nightmare received before you fell is now gone. I'm not sure how the Nightmare heals itself, but it can be a pain.
