Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. After beating Key Cavern, Link finds Tarin up to more trouble. What will Link get out of this encounter if he hands over the stick?

Answer: Honeycomb

Honeycomb and a load of laughs. Link picked up a stick that Kiki left behind, but he has no practical use for it. When Tarin asks for the stick, Link hands it over. Sit back and watch a low IQ at work! Tarin approaches the object on the rock and prods it several times with the stick.

When bees swarm from the hive, Tarin runs wildly around the screen a few times before running away and taking all the bees with him. Link then receives the honeycomb without a single sting to pay for it. :)
2. After Key Cavern, Link searches for the next level, Angler's Tunnel, but he can't even get near it without the Angler's Key... What village does Link discover during this side-trip?

Answer: Animal Village

Someday, this game should be redone in 3-D with the same basic layout. I'd love to see the look on Link's face when he comes face to face with a big, white, talking rabbit. The talking animals of Animal Village include a bear who cooks, an alligator who carves and paints, a hippo who wears a tutu, and a goat who writes lonely single men and sends them photos of Princess Peach (by Hero Express Mail, of course).

They call Mabe Village (where Marin lives) their sister village. Kakariko appears in other "Zelda" games, and Labrynna is the island in "Oracle of Ages."
3. Link needs to explore Yarna Desert to find the Angler Key, but there is a very large obstacle in his path to the desert. What stands in Link's way to Yarna Desert?

Answer: Giant walrus

A giant walrus slumbers in the pathway, and he will not move for Link. The walrus is dreaming about Marin (it's obvious by the little pictures of her) Link returns to Animal Village for help and the animals talk about Marin quite a bit. The big "baker bear" will trade the honeycomb for a pineapple, and then tell Link that Marin can wake the walrus up in a hurry.

After coming all this way, Link has to go all the way back... Remember to take the warp-jump to Ukuku Prairie to cut time.
4. Marin is the talented singer of Mabe Village, and she is often asked to sing "Ballad of the Windfish." What is Marin's dream in life?

Answer: To travel to distant places

By asking around Mabe Village, Link finds out Marin has gone to the beach. When he finds her in the cove farthest to the right, she wants to sit and talk for a while. She gets sentimental and talks about Tarin's belief that there is nothing beyond the sea.

She had always hoped otherwise, and now she wants to hear all about Link and his adventures... She gets really embarrassed that she blurted it out. She also said that she wants to travel far away and sing for other people. If you missed this, you skipped the dialogue and then told her you paid attention. Link quickly changes the topic from her embarrassment to the walrus.
5. Link takes Marin in tow and heads for Yarna Desert again. Marin comments on many of the things Link does. Which of these does she NOT respond to?

Answer: Getting injured

Strangely enough, when Marin agrees to follow Link to the Desert, the game allows him to briefly hold her above his head like anything else he discovers. "Is this your big chance?" Clearly trying to say something, they are. Well, Link did call her Zelda...

This was the last "Zelda" game before "Ocarina of Time," and Marin is much like Malon of Hyrule; but Link thinks Marin looks like Zelda in this game. Marin comments on everything from ocarina playing ("hm... not very good... What? I didn't say anything.") to pot breaking, to getting squashed if you jump down the well; but she doesn't comment on getting injured by enemies.
6. Link gets the Angler's Key, defeats Angler's Tunnel, and gets the fourth of eight items needed to enter the Windfish's Egg. What is the whole set called?

Answer: Siren's Instruments

"Siren: Greek Myth. One of a group of sea nymphs whose sweet singing lured mariners to destruction on the rocks around their island." Wait, who's being lured, and by what? Link is already parked on the island; he's trying to get off, not bring others! Well, the game is called "Link's Awakening." You begin to pick up clues, even from the Nightmares (the bosses), that this is all a dream. Link's arrival added his nightmares to those of the Windfish. Apparently, Link has a lot on his mind-Zelda (maybe Malon, who seems much like Marin though "Ocarina of Time" was not created yet), monsters, Ganon, and Hyrule.
7. The Dreamer's Shrine stands northeast of Marin's home, and is guarded by heavy stones. What item does Link get when he COMPLETELY clears the Dreamer's Shrine?

Answer: Ocarina

Link needs the Pegasus Boots from Key Cavern to clear the strange objects in the way. Link finds the ocarina in the second chest of the shrine. This was the first time an ocarina was introduced in a "Zelda" game. (In "Link to the Past," there was a magic flute that called a bird to carry Link across Hyrule.) After discovering the ocarina, Link can learn the "Ballad of the Windfish" from Marin by walking down and showing her the new instrument. Once you learn other songs, you can open the menu, choose the ocarina, and choose a song. You must have the ocarina, the ballad, and the frog's song to complete the game.
8. After Link beats Angler's Tunnel, he is haunted by a ghost that will not let him enter the next level, Catfish's Maw. What does Link receive for helping the ghost?

Answer: A secret seashell

First the ghost wants to be escorted to the dilapidated little house by the seashore. Perhaps he was the angler of Angler's Tunnel? When he sees how devastated the house is, he wants to go to his grave. After Link walks the ghost to the lonely grave below the cemetery, the ghost will send him back to the house to look in the pots. If Link wants the seashell, he has to backtrack to the house and lift the pots to find it.

There are extra seashells in the game, so don't worry about every single one. You do need twenty to upgrade Link's sword, and I definitely recommend that!
9. Every time he finds a compass in "Link's Awakening," Link is told that it has a new feature. Which of these features is the *new* one?

Answer: Tells if a key is hidden in that room

The compass does indeed make a "tone" when you enter a room with a hidden key, and it really helps when you're missing one! The "tone" sounds like a couple of notes that play over the dungeon music, and it may be difficult to catch at first. It was the final hint I needed to find what I had called "the missing key of Turtle Rock." Three of us put together hadn't found it, but I finally noticed the tone.

The map records the rooms you have been in, and the other compass features are not new.
10. Every dungeon that Link visits has a map that will help you navigate these confusing places. What is special about the dungeon maps in this game (and the "Legend of Zelda: Oracles" games)?

Answer: The rooms on the map are arranged to make a picture.

The most obvious one is Key Cavern, where the rooms are laid in the outline of two keys. The only exception is level seven, Eagle's Tower, in which each floor of the tower is a normal square. In the "Oracles" games, the tradition of picture maps was continued. The maps do contain all levels of the dungeon and hidden rooms that have been found.
Thanks for joining me on this little trip to the past with the Hero of Time. :)
