Greek Myth Trivia Questions

1. The first mythical Greek tells you, "I gave Daddy a massive headache!"

From Quiz
Greek Mythical Masquerade Mixer 9 for 10

Answer: Athena

Legend has it that Zeus impregnated Metis and then decided to eat her. If that doesn't sound weird enough, soon after, Zeus is complaining of a headache, and low and behold Athena pops out of his head as a full adult! Yeah, that makes sense, right? The other popular myth is that she has no mother at all and just popped out of Zeus' head. Athena is the goddess of wisdom and war. I didn't realize those two topics went together...but they do for the ancient Greeks!

2. Who was the leader of the Titans who overthrew his father Uranus with the help of his mother Gaia?

From Quiz 9 for 10 - Greek Myth

Answer: Cronus

Cronus was jealous of Uranus' power as ruler of the universe. Uranus had alienated his wife Gaia by hiding away their children, whom he could not abide, deep inside the earth. It was Gaia who constructed the stone sickle with which Cronus castrated his father. In the fullness of time, Cronus was in turn overthrown by his son Zeus.

3. Who was the counterpart of Scylla?

From Quiz Legendary Creatures of Greek Mythology

12. Who taught viticulture (the cultivation of grapes) and viniculture (the secrets of winemaking) to ancient Athenians?

From Quiz Ten Myths from Ancient Greece

Answer: Icarius, an Athenean aristocrat, father of Erigone

During Pandion's reign, Dionysus visited Attica and became a good friend of Icarius, who was cordial towards the God and gave him residence. Icarius learned from Dionysus all the secrets of viticulture and the making of wine, which he started teaching to the Atheneans. During that visit the Wine God had a love affair with Icarius' daughter, Erigone, and gave her a son, Staphylus. Unfortunately Erigone had a very tragic end. Dionysus had given Icarius some pretty strong wine as a gift. When Icarius tasted it he liked it so much that he immediately went out to the fields with his chariot to share it with his shepherds. They all drank from it, became very intoxicated and passed out. When they woke up, they thought that Icarius had tried to poison them, so they hunted him down and killed him. Icarius' dog alerted Erigone and led her to her father's unburied corpse. Erigone, devastated, buried her father and then hanged herself from a tree, above his grave.

A similar fate was later to befall Autonoe's son Actaeon by the hand of Artemis. Alcippe was a daughter of Ares who was raped by Poseidon's son Halirrhothius. Alecto was one of the Furies, along with Megaera and Tisiphone. Arethusa was a wood-nymph who was pursued by the river-god Alpheus and turned into a spring.

16. One of the oldest operas ever was composed by Jacopo Peri and bears the name of Orpheus' wife. Who was she?

From Quiz Operatic Greek Myth

Answer: Eurydice

Jacopo Peri (1561-1633) composed the opera "Euridice" in 1600. It didn't get the success Monteverdi obtained with his opera "Orfeo" (1607). Other composers that have treated the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice are Darius Milhaud (1892-1974), Christoph Willibald von Gluck (1714-1787), Jacques Offenbach (1819-1880) and Igor Stravinsky (1882-1971). Thalia, Euphrosyne and Aglaia are the three Graces: daughters of Zeus who symbolise aspects of beauty. When Eurydice died, Orpheus went to hell to get her back. His music convinced Hades to give Eurydice back, on the condition that he would never look back. Sadly enough he did, losing his wife thus for the second time.
