Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Ares and Aphrodite had four children, according to most myths. They were Fear, Harmony, Love and which of these?

Answer: Panic

Aphrodite was actually married to Hephaistos, but produced no children by him. She was a notorious adulteress, and constantly cheated on her husband. She ended up being caught by Hephaistos. The Greek names of the children of Aphrodite and Ares were Phobos (Panic), Deimos (Fear), Harmonia (Harmony) and Eros (Love).
2. According to Orphism Dionysos was a child of Zeus and...?

Answer: Persephone

According to this myth Dionysos was eaten by the Titans, and Zeus in rage killed them with his thunderbolt. Humans appeard from the ashes of the murdered Titans.
3. In Greek myth heroes almost always had one mortal parent and one immortal. The gods, on the other hand, had both parents of divine nature. He was the only god to be born from a mortal parent.

Answer: Dionysos

His mother was Semele. Dionysos was also the last Olympian god to be born. The worship of Dionysos probably came from the East, and is considered to have been rather ambigous. Not everyone chose to worship this deity, hence there were many so-called "resistance" myths, where Dionysos punished severely those who did not pay him proper respect.
4. He was produced from the semen of unlucky Hephaistos. The latter tried to rape Athena, but was unsuccessful in his nasty attempt, and he ejaculated on the ground.

Answer: Erichthonius

Erichthonius was a mythical king of Athens. He was thought to be in part a serpent, and in part a human.
5. She was the oldest and the youngest of the six children of Kronos and Rhea.

Answer: Hestia

She was the oldest because she was born first, yet she was the youngest because she was the last one to be vomited by Kronos.
6. This healer was the son of Apollo and Coronis.

Answer: Asclepios

Asclepios was a hero healer, later deified. He was said to have been so good in the art of healing that he could bring the dead back to life. For that reason Asclepios was killed by Zeus. Machaon and Podalirius were actually the sons of Asclepios, and Chiron was his teacher.
7. Now, let us turn to the pre-Olympian deities. Chaos produced two children, namely Erebos and Nyx. Those two in turn produced two children. Hemera was one of them. Who was the other child?

Answer: Aither

Aither (or Aether) in Greek is "light" or "brightness". The other child's name Hemera, means "day" in Greek. It is extremely paradoxical, since Erebos is 'Darkness', and Nyx is "Night". Koios and Kreios were Titans, sons of Gaia and Ouranos.
8. According to one version of the myth, Hephaistos was born as a response to the birth of Athene. In this telling, who was the father of Hephaistos?

Answer: No one

According to this myth Hera produced Hephaistos parthenogenetically because she was angry with Zeus for giving birth to Athene. Hera then was not happy with the resulted child, and she threw him down from Mount Olympus.
9. Gaia had a parthenogenetic child Ouranos. She then had twelve children by him. Who was NOT a child of Gaia and Ouranos?

Answer: Metis

Metis was actually the daughter of Okeanos and Tethys. She was the mother of Athene, and Zeus, fearing revolt, swallowed the pregnant Titan.
10. Hermes and Aphrodite had a son named Hermaphroditus. He was joined as one with a nymph, who fell in love with the beautiful boy, and begged the gods to never separate her with Hermaphroditus. What was the name of the nymph?

Answer: Salmacis

Maia was a nymph and the mother of Hermes. Sinope was an object of Apollo's affection, and unwilling to be with him she asked the god for one wish before the sexual act. With the wish having been granted Sinope asked for perpetual virginity. Salamis was a nymph, who was captured by Poseidon and taken to the island, which was named after her.
