Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which animal has the misconception of being dirty when they're really just trying to cool themselves off since they don't have the ability to sweat?

Answer: Pig

Pigs are commonly called dirty or filthy, they even lend themselves to the phrase "sweating like a pig" which is false since pigs don't sweat. They use water and mud to cool themselves off. Pigs are also known to be careful about not soiling the area where they sleep or eat.

There's also an anecdote about a woman who built a shower for her pigs and they learned how to turn it on and off by themselves. So, go ahead, be a pig!
2. This animal is referred to as both blind and crazy, but really they're just different than us. Which animal uses echolocation to help them navigate quickly?

Answer: Bat

Bats are not blind and actually have very good eyesight, especially in the dark. But bats use echolocation - emitting high frequency sounds to help them navigate and locate objects. Bats use this to dart from food source to food source - insects that humans might not have even seen. They have highly attuned senses that humans aren't very good at using. So, go ahead, be a bat!
3. Which animal is used as an insult for being stupid or stubborn, but in reality they've been a dependable work animal for 5000 years and just has a stronger self-preservation instinct than other members of the Equidae family?

Answer: Donkey

Traditionally smaller than the horses related to them (Equidae family), donkeys have learned to defend themselves by biting and kicking. They have a strong sense of self-preservation and instinct as prey. With a weak connection to a human, donkeys are difficult to force or frighten into doing something they perceive as dangerous.

They have also been bred as work animals and can be very dependable in a role that they're comfortable with. So, go ahead, be a donkey!
4. Which animal are people compared to when they're called lazy, stupid and fat? Poor bovine, sleeps less than people do, and its weight is a direct consequence of human behavior.

Answer: Cow

The cow is called lazy when in fact they only sleep four hours a day. They're also called stupid, but are actually highly intelligent animals who have excellent memories and form complex social hierarchies. The weight of cattle has steadily increased over the last few decades but that is due to humans need for beef and our ability to process more beef.

It's not their fault they're that big. So, go ahead, be a cow!
5. Which animal is used for the insult of being cowardly, as well as being a common source for human food, but their ability to peck their way up a social ladder and get larger food to satisfy their omnivore needs, suggests perhaps we shouldn't take it for granted?

Answer: Chicken

Chickens are omnivores (goats, rabbits and yaks are all herbivores); in addition to scouring land for seeds and insects, they are also known for attacking larger animals like lizards or mice for food. Chickens do have a social hierarchy, with those at the bottom of the totem poll not having as much leeway for nesting or food places.

As they move up in the world, they can do what it takes to survive. So, go ahead, be a chicken!
6. Which animal is usually referred to as shy, but have been known to build complex burrows in all kinds of environments to escape their numerous predators and have proven to be well-adapted at avoiding danger?

Answer: Mouse

Mice have many known predators and are in constant danger of being eaten, in fact they used to be frequently consumed by humans, so you should forgive them if they don't warm up to you right away. Mice have built sophisticated tunnels and burrows in many different environments in order to escape their predators.

They have keen senses for avoiding danger and it has kept them alive in large numbers for centuries.
7. Which animal likes being part of the flock leading to the rude distinction of being dimwitted followers, but the fact that this animal likes to stick together is what made it one of the first domesticated species of livestock - farmers can keep them grazing on grassy hills without being fenced in?

Answer: Sheep

The tendency of sheep to follow the leader has given the world the phrase 'sheeple' - the unkind comparison for people who can't think for themselves. While it is true that sheep are flock animals with dominance heirarchy and a natural inclination to follow the leader, they are also gregarious animals who choose to be part of the pack.

A report by the University of Illinois has shown that sheep are actually intelligent animals with the ability to recognize and remember human faces, and differentiate emotional states. So, go ahead, be a sheep!
8. Being compared to which animal implies that you are greedy, sneaky and selfish, but this larger member of the Muroidea family has been used in scientific research since 1895 and are just opportunistic survivors?

Answer: Rat

Rats are an invasive species found on every continent except Antartica, and they are constantly looking for our scraps. But it has been proven that rats are trainable, and more importantly are social animals. They can be trained to help humans detect danger, and they also look out for one another. Rats have been shown to help free other caged rats, and share their food. So, go ahead, be a rat!
9. Which animal gets the unfair comparison of being stubborn or spiteful, but when you've been domesticated for 9000 years you're going to develop a strong sense of curiosity and use everything at your disposal, including your horns, to seek out new horizons?

Answer: Goat

Goats are very inquisitive animals who will climb anything, crawl under anything, smell anything, lick anything all in the search for food. They might be hard to contain, but that's because they'll always be on the look-out for their next advantage and exploit any weakness they can. Goats don't have the same flocking nature as sheep, and with their high intelligence and natural curiousity, they are going to figure out how to best a human. So, go ahead, be a goat!
10. Which animal would you be if you're believed to be so desperate to follow others of your breed that you jump off a cliff and kill yourself? This creature is so misunderstood that it can't migrate during the winter without wild misconceptions.

Answer: Lemming

It's a common misconception that lemmings jump off cliffs in droves and kill themselves. But lemmings can swim and they migrate, the misconception coming from lemmings migrating en masse and jumping off cliffs to swim to the other side. Occasionally, some will die but that's just part of life. Lemmings also have unique colouring and are not easily distinguishable to their many predators. Lemmings are very active animals who can swim and are constantly coming up with new ways to evade predators and scientists who still can't fully explain their erratic population cycle. So, go ahead, be a lemming!
