Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Breeds of this animal include Altai, Hirzai and Dutch Warmblood. What type of animal are these?

Answer: Horse

There is evidence that horses have been domesticated by humans for over 5000 years. An Altai horse is one that is typically just over 13 hands tall and originated in Central Asia in the Altai Mountains. The Hirzai has an average height of around 15 hands. As the name suggests, the Dutch Warmblood breed was developed in the Netherlands and they are often used in show jumping.
2. Bond, Coolalee, Polwarth and White Suffolk are all breeds of which animal?

Answer: Sheep

All of the mentioned breeds of sheep originated in Australia, however, it is widely accepted that sheep originated in Europe or Asia. Sheep are mostly bred for either the purpose of wool or meat. The White Suffolk and Coolalee are bred for meat. Bond sheep are generally wool sheep. Some sheep are bred for both purposes such as the Polwarth.
3. Hammer-headed, Fijian monkey-faced, blossom and bumblebee are all species of what mammal?

Answer: Bat

Bats are the only mammals that are capable of sustaining flight. They generally eat either insects or fruit, although, there are some species that eat other animals. Evidence in the form of fossils, shows us that bats have been in existence for more than 50 million years.
4. Species of this animal include elephant nose, African brown knife, rosey barb and gold gourami. What are these animals?

Answer: Fish

There are more than 30 thousand species of fish and they exist in most of the world's bodies of water. Many species of fish are consumed by humans and are thought to be beneficial to our health due to the omega-3 that they contain. For this reason they are a major influence on the world's economy.
5. Varieties of this animal include Dwarf Hotot, Mini Rex, Blue of Sint-Niklaas and Checkered Giant. What is the animal?

Answer: Rabbit

Rabbits have been selectively bred for hundreds of years, however, this has led to many hip, eye and other conditions in the animals. Blue of Sint-Niklaas rabbits are believed to be one of the oldest breeds of fur rabbits and were developed in the Flanders region of Belgium. They are now considered very rare.
6. Varieties of this animal include dromedary and Bactrian. What type of animal are these two species?

Answer: Camel

Dromedary camels are a variety of camels with only one hump on their backs. Domesticated dromedary camels are prevalent in North African and Middle Eastern countries. There are also wild dromedary camels living in Australia, where they were first introduced in 1840. Bactrian camels are those with two humps on their back. They are thought to be native to Asia.
7. Species of this reptile include Asian box, red-eared slider, false map and Florida pond cooter. What is the animal?

Answer: Turtle

Turtles are one of the oldest reptiles living on earth. Evidence has been found of turtles that were alive more than 200 million years ago. Humans have a number of uses for turtles including keeping them as pets, eating them and using them in Chinese medicine.
8. Species of this animal include eastern grey, antilopine and red. To which animal do all of these species belong?

Answer: Kangaroo

Kangaroos are a native and symbolic Australian animal and there are more than 60 known species. Certain species can attain a weight of up to 90 kilograms and over short distances travel speeds of up to 70 kilometers per hour. Indigenous Australians have used the meat and skins of kangaroos for thousands of years.
9. Subspecies of the following animal include Bengal, South China and Sumatran. What animal has these breeds?

Answer: Tiger

There are only six subspecies of tigers still living, the most common being the Bengal tiger. Tigers can reach a weight of up to 300 kilograms and a length of over three meters. They are carnivores, and in the wild commonly eat animals such as water buffalo, wild boar and occasionally elephant calves. Tigers have been known to eat humans, however, usually only the older ones that are unable to hunt do this.
10. Which animal includes the subspecies northeast Congo, Barbary and Tsavo?

Answer: Lion

There are only eight subspecies of lions left in the world today; this is thought to be mostly due to habitat loss and hunting. The Barbary lion can no longer be found in the wild and there are less than one hundred in captivity in zoos around the world. In the wild, lions live for an average of around 14 years, however, in captivity they can live for more than 20.
