Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The top part of a tortoise shell is called the carapace. What is the underside called?

Answer: Plastron

The shell is made up of many bones joined together. It was once thought that the age could be determined by the number of rings but this is not so as the rings can vary according to the conditions in which the animal lives.
2. Some individual sea turtles can be identified by the unique markings on what part of their anatomy?

Answer: Flippers

The flippers have a unique pattern which does not change with time so individual turtles can be identified. Adult turtles use their flippers to swim but hatchlings can use them to cross the sand to the sea.
3. On St. Helena there lives a large tortoise called Jonathan. What species is he?

Answer: Seychelles giant tortoise

Jonathan lives in the grounds of the Governor's residence with some other tortoises. He is reputed to be over 175 years old.
4. What should you NOT feed to your pet tortoise?

Answer: Cat or dog food

Cat or dog foods contain too much protein for tortoises, which can cause shell deformities or health problems. Most wild tortoises are herbivores.
5. Turtles are found in every continent except one. Which one?

Answer: Antarctica

As far as is known there are no living turtles in Antarctica but ancient turtle fossils have been found on Seymour Island.
6. The Galapagos giant tortoises are found in the Galapagos Islands. Where are they located?

Answer: Pacific Ocean

They are situated in the Pacific Ocean off the west coast of Ecuador close to the Equator. They are a province of Ecuador.

Called Geochelong nigra these large animals can live to over 100 years old and can be as much as six feet long.
7. What name covers tortoises, turtles and terrapins?

Answer: Chelonians

In Great Britain tortoises live on land, terrapins live in fresh water and turtles live in the ocean. The names vary in other countries.

Batrachian refers to toads, reptilian to snakes and eusuchian to alligators.
8. Turtles sometimes 'brumate'. What is this?

Answer: Partial Hibernation

If temperatures remain warm during winter some box turtles will stop feeding and use up their reserves instead of hibernating completely and will often die. A period of hibernation is essential.
9. Generally speaking what is the difference between tortoise shells and turtle shells?

Answer: Tortoise shells are more dome shaped than turtle shells

Some turtles can pull their head, feet and legs inside their shells for protection.

The leatherback turtle's shell is leathery because it dives to great depths and the water pressure could crush a hard shell.
10. To what author is the story of 'The Tortoise and the Hare' attributed?

Answer: Aesop

This is the story of a tortoise and a hare who agreed to have a race. The hare was so certain that he would win that he rested and fell asleep. The tortoise plodded past him and won the race.

There are several versions of the story and several morals which can be taken from it, such as 'More haste, Less speed'.
