Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. GRB
Answer: Grebe
There are many subspecies of grebe, but all have a long beak and love the water. These freshwater diving birds can be found all around the world. In the face of danger, this bird will dive deep into the water as opposed to running or flying away. During mating season the males of this migratory species will sprout decorative feathers which are used to impress possible mates.
2. QL
Answer: Quail
There are many species of quail, but all are small with short legs, usually laying their eggs in a nest on the ground. They lay as many as a dozen eggs at a time and have a diet that consists of berries, seeds and the occasional insect. They are similar in appearance to the partridge, and the two are often mistaken for each other.
3. GL
Answer: Eagle
There are many types of eagles found all over the globe. These birds of prey are among the largest flying birds in the world. Males are usually slightly larger than females and both will use their sharp talons to hunt small prey such as rodents, fish and snakes.
They have some of the best eyesight in the animal kingdom and some of the sharpest beaks. This chick shows the majestic stature of the eagle, even as a chick.
4. GRT
Answer: Egret
The egret is a type of wading bird known for its beautiful white (usually) plumage. They stand in shallow wetland waters waiting for fish to swim by. They use their long sharp bills to catch their prey. Their lovely feathers have led to a decline in populations around the world as they were a favored decoration in the world of millinery.
5. CRMRNT
Answer: Cormorant
The aquatic bird known as a cormorant is also called a shag in some parts of the world. They usually nest in colonies in locations near the water. The coloring of the feathers varies with each sub-species, as does the shape of the beak. Their primary prey is fish and sometimes small eels.
6. BS
Answer: ibis
The ibis is a wading bird that has a downward pointing bill that it uses to dig in the mud for crustaceans. The ibis comes in many varieties and in many differing colors including this lovely scarlet ibis. Their image was often used in ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics and artwork. Their nests are usually found in trees near the water.
7. TCN
Answer: Toucan
The colorful toucan is found in various areas of South America. They have an oversized bill which is used to catch insects, lizards and sometimes young birds of other species. It also helps them to get to various fruits that are found in their tropical forest home. Nests are usually made in tree holes and the toucan usually lives in small family groups of about six members.
8. KW
Answer: Kiwi
The flightless kiwi is one of the more unusual birds on the planet. Found only on the island nation of New Zealand, most subspecies are threatened by not-native predators. Kiwis lay one egg in a ground nest and both parents assist in the incubation. Kiwi have an excellent sense of smell and are the only birds on earth to have nostrils at the ends of their beaks.
9. PNGN
Answer: Penguin
The flightless penguin is a wonderful swimmer and finds all its food in the sea. While many are found in Antarctica, there are subspecies that are found as far north as the Galapagos Islands. All penguins are black and white in color and have and have wings that have become more like flippers than wings.
10. LBTRSS
Answer: Albatross
The albatross is an oceanic bird with long slender wings that it uses to stay aloft for months at a time. They have the longest wingspan of any bird and one of the longest lifespans. They are almost never seen on land except during breeding season and feed primarily on krill, fish and squid.
