Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Begin with a ten letter word meaning *to speed up*

Answer: Accelerate

To accelerate is to change the velocity of anything and cause it to speed up as a result. It could be a piece of machinery, such as a train or a boat, or a human action such as switching from jogging to sprinting.
2. Drop two letters, add another, then anagram to give a nine letter word meaning *gashed, torn or ripped*

Answer: Lacerated

If something has been lacerated, it usually doesn't leave a clean even wound, but one with a ragged and torn edge. This sort of wound could perhaps be caused from an attack by scissors or a jagged weapon, or by or by falling onto shattered glass or the broken edge of a brick wall and so on.
3. Drop two letters, then anagram, to give a seven letter word meaning *to have removed away all rubbish and debris*

Answer: Cleared

If any surface has been cleared, rubbish and other unwanted materials have been removed from it. Examples of this could be a garden full of high weeds and dead bushes that has been cleared of all that debris, or a table that was piled high with dirty plates that have now been cleared away, washed, and stacked in a cupboard until the next meal.
4. Add a letter, then anagram for an eight letter word meaning *one who makes a clear and decisive statement*

Answer: Declarer

A declarer is one who speaks out clearly and definitely by making some sort of statement of intent or plan of action that that person means to take to its completion. Examples of this could the Managing Director at a board meeting who is stating the plan of operations for the coming year, or a sergeant giving specific directions to his or her troops.
5. Drop two letters, add another, then anagram for a seven letter word meaning *places where food is stored*

Answer: Larders

Larders and pantries are similar type rooms. These are places where food is stored away for future consumption. The only different perhaps is that larders usually have cooler temperatures than do pantries. Pantries are more for long term use foods such as flour, jams, cereals, canned food and the like.
6. Drop two letters, add another, then anagram for a six letter word for *a device to enable one to reach higher places around the home*

Answer: Ladder

A ladder is a portable wood or metal tool that has fixed rungs placed at even intervals in between two long sturdy side supports. It enables people to climb up same to reach places that are normally out of reach from a standing position. Some ladders can be collapsed down into more compact sizes for storage purpose, or folded out sidewards for extra support. Amazingly, ladders were being used by man more than 10,000 years ago.
7. Drop three letters, add two, and then anagram for a five letter word meaning *an old-fashioned item once used by students to write upon*

Answer: Slate

References to writing on slate date back to the 14th century, but these were more of a rarity then than in general use. The majority of people couldn't write at that period in history, so there was not the need for them on a more regular basis. By the late 18th and early 19th centuries, however, writing slates for school students could be seen in most school rooms.

These were extremely practical in that a quick wipe from a cloth could erase all content, and the slate could be used over and over - but impractical in that all information contained thereon, unless thoroughly memorised, was gone forever.

They were normally only used in the early primary classes when children were still learning their letters and numbers - and then came the wobbly and daring process of transferring writing onto the more permanent paper.
8. Drop two letters, add another, then anagram to give a four letter word meaning *a watery drop from the eye*

Answer: Tear

Tears are interesting when you really think about them. They help keep the eyeball - another interesting concept - lubricated, and they help wash dust and grit out of same by rushing to the rescue in larger numbers. The most fascinating thing about tears is that, when we feel impossibly sad, they pour from our eyes in sorrow.

There are three types of tears. The ones that keep the eyeball lubricated and free from dust are called basal tears. A second category, called reflex tears, are those caused by yawning, laughing, cutting onions, overly bright light and the like.

The third category, those tears associated with emotion, are known as psychic tears. It's just heartbreaking to see anyone crying in sorrow.
9. Add two letters, then anagram to give a word meaning *loud noise and clamour*

Answer: Racket

With regard to the question, a racket is a lot of noise and shouting and banging and any other sort of disturbance you can think of that disturbs the peace, sleep and composure. Other uses of this word include a con or swindle of some sort, or a sports instrument used to play various ball games including tennis - except that other English speaking countries spell the latter of those definitions as "racquet". One could have a dishonest racket selling poorly made rackets, which, when found out, could cause the customers to kick up a real racket in protest.
10. Finally, drop three letters, then anagram to take you right back to a three letter word associated with question one.

Answer: Car

Ah the good old motor car, a powered vehicle with wheels that can transport us to wherever we want to go. Well, to most places at any rate. Usually roads are required for these vehicles to drive upon, but not necessarily so. When first built, cars were powered by steam. Oh my goodness, the earliest model of those dates back to 1672(!) when one was built in China by a Jesuit missionary from Holland working in that country. And on it went.

The history of the motor car is fascinating - and the projected future designs of same anticipated to be even more so. One day we will have cars that can fly, and go under the ocean, that don't need roads or petrol, and that can take us anywhere we desire.

It's going to be very, very exciting.
