Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. (EXAMPLE: An adornment for a girl's hair - and a part of a ship. ANSWER: Bow. Now, it's your turn) Part of your body - and to get ready for battle?

Answer: Arm

An arm is an arm is an arm on a human. It's difficult to find another way to describe it. It is usually attached to the shoulder, and comes with five digits at its extreme end. It you didn't have an arm, you would be 'armless.

To arm oneself in preparation for battle is to don all the defensive and offensive gear necessary for survival under those sorrowful circumstances.
2. A tool for learning or relaxation - and what a police officer does when he sees bad driving?

Answer: Book

Books are wonderful works of the written language containing a myriad of information, or stories, or instructions, or any other number of categories that allow us to develop and learn and grow. Each is a creative work of art on its own, no matter what its subject may be.

If you've been booked and received a ticket for a driving offense, tsk, tsk. Being in control of any kind of moving vehicle comes with a duty of care to those contained within that vehicle and for other drivers, passengers and pedestrians on the road.
3. The annoying sound coming from the yard next door - and part of a creation by mother nature?

Answer: Bark

Have you ever lived next to the house with a constantly yapping, barking, growling, panting fiend? I do. His dog is also very annoying as well.

The bark is the external covering on the trunks of mother nature's gifts to the world - beautiful, beautiful trees. Each one is a miracle and a blessing.
4. A term referring to debauched behaviour - and the bottom of something?

Answer: Base

Someone whose behaviour is described as base is a very distasteful person indeed. They have unhealthy and socially unacceptable habits and desires - and usually act on same.

The base of anything, be it a mountain or a tree or a building, is the part at that structure that is closest to the ground.
5. A happy smile - and a carpenter's construction product?

Answer: Beam

A happy smile is a thing of joy. It gives a sparkle to the eyes, a lift to the face, joy to the heart - and releases healthful chemicals in the brain. Smile - and make the world a better place. (I'm starting to sound like Confucius.)

Beams are those heavy shaped logs of wood that are the hull or keel of a house or roof. Smaller pieces of board are nailed on these and act as the external and internal skin of the building. Exposed beams on a ceiling is a rather lovely look however - and you can hang all kinds of lovely pot plants from them.
6. Fired by a crossbow - and something a horse does?

Answer: Bolt

A bolt is the device fired from a crossbow. The word is used interchangeably with the word arrow for those of us who don't know the difference. Without either, William Tell could not have shot the apple off the head of his son. A bow and arrow in the hands of an inexperienced archer, however, is a thing of terror. Duck!

When a horse is bolting, the poor old fellow has probably been alarmed by something to such an extent that he's has taken off frantically and uncontrollably down the road. Being a Sagittarian, I can identify with that whenever the electricity bill arrives.
7. Containers of any size - and what a pugilist does?

Answer: Boxes

Boxes come in all shapes and sizes and can be made from most materials. Our understanding of a box in the English speaking world though is something usually made from cardboard.

A boxer is a foolhardy sportsman who steps into a ring (which isn't a ring at all) with another foolhardy person, and, with both wearing padded gloves, they attempt to knock the stuffing out of each other. This is a sport of great skill, speed, and agility, but it can lead to terrible brain injuries.
8. A metal container - and slang for something we hope not to use on a regular basis - OR something that we do use on a regular basis?

Answer: Can

A can, made out of tin or aluminium perhaps, is a cylinder-shaped object that, for the most part, is used to store preserved food or drink. It can also contain aerosols and oils and the like.

A can has two other meanings in Australia, if not elsewhere. The first of these is another word for jail - while the second is another word for a toilet.
9. To throw aside - and what a fisherman does?

Answer: Casts

It something has been cast aside, it has been rejected or spurned as being of little value.

When a fisherman flicks his rod, or rather his line, out over the water, he tries to cast it as far as possible so that the line, bait and hook will sink into areas of water in which fish are known to swim.
10. To give in - and a place in which our far distant ancestors are said to have dwelt?

Answer: Cave

If you have caved in when debating anything with another person, you have conceded defeat over the topic at hand. You could also cave in when a nice freshly cooked slice of cake is waved under your nose while you are trying to lose weight. Hang the diet, in other words.

A cave in a small opening or cavern in the side of a mountain. In days of yore it is believed that some people lived in caves to protect themselves both from the weather and from wild animals. I imagine though that this image of cave-dwellers, though containing a degree of truth, has been greatly exaggerated.
