Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This person could save your life from a watery doom.

Answer: lifeguard

Water gives life, but can so easily take it away as well. Some of the flags to look out for when swimming at beaches are:

A red horizontal strip with a yellow horizontal strip indicates the area is patrolled by a lifeguard. The lifeguard will help struggling swimmers and bring anyone who looks as though they are drowning out of the water.

A red flag indicates danger, so don't swim here.

The checkered flag does not indicate the final lap, but it does indicate watersports such as surfing are going on, so it isn't suitable to swim between these flags either.

Finally, although there are more, the orange windsock indicates high winds, and so it's unwise to use inflatable devices such as dinghies.
2. My way of life, your way of life.

Answer: lifestyle

Some peoples' lifestyles keep them full of life and vitality. And some don't. "Lifestyle" can refer to the way we live our life, or as to the beliefs which direct our behaviour. Understanding of our lifestyles can help to further our understanding of humanity. Of course, it can also help advertisers sell us products, which one should keep aware of.
3. A crook or criminal might be called this.

Answer: lowlife

This somewhat colloquial term derides those who society do not consider useful. But is it right to condemn such people? Everyone has their own life story.
4. Activities after dark in cities are known as this.

Answer: nightlife

Discos, clubs, concerts... Nightlife is about having fun in the late hours.
If, like me, that isn't your thing, you could just sleep instead...
5. Neither the beginning nor end of life, some say crises occur at this time.

Answer: midlife

The transition between around ages 40-60 is known as the midlife. Some people undergo this transition without any major problems, but the suggestion that there is now more life behind than ahead can be harrowing to some. And there could be discontentment with their career; that the person feels they did not achieve what they could.

There could be identity concerns over rumination of actions taken in the past. Mix in some debt and family death, and it's not a surprise people can feel a 'crisis' at this age range. But, they are not alone, and there is no shame in seeking professional help.
6. This vessel could save your life at sea.

Answer: lifeboat

The famous Titanic historically lacked enough of these lifeboats, only accounting for around half of the crew. They were allowed to do so according to law at that time - the law at the time had not considered such a large ship. And so, most life was not boated, rather it was lost to the chill of the water. A reminder not to place too much faith in schematic alone.
7. The untamed fauna and flora of our world.

Answer: wildlife

For those not in the know; David Attenborough makes a lot of documentaries with a natural theme. He's never too far away from some form of wildlife...
8. The rapid reproduction or increase in number of cells or even inanimate objects.

Answer: proliferation

Cancer cells are highly prolific since the reproduction of abnormal cells leads to the tumorous growth.

And, nuclear proliferation refers to the spread of nuclear weapons and technology. The Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty includes MOST countries (not all) and the three pillars of this treaty are the non-proliferation, disarmament and peaceful use of nuclear technology. In other words, a safeguard against thermonuclear global war.
9. That drawing of flowers looks realistic - it's almost as though they were alive; they're so _____ .

Answer: lifelike

Much art and design is focused on becoming lifelike. Still-life and realistic paintings try to capture the visual frame of a certain moment, and graphics as used in CGI and video games often tries to converge on what we would see in 'reality'. And yet, paradoxically, many of us are trying to escape from reality at the same time...
10. Now this quiz has come to an end, it has life no more.

Answer: lifeless

That was just a metaphor, although we often ascribe life, or living qualities to inanimate objects. Cartoons are not alive, and yet, they give sentience and, often, human characteristics to creatures. Pictures, photos and adverts are not alive, yet they often depict scenarios which used subject matter which is/was 'alive'. Vibrant colours are not alive, but they can be associated with abundance and life.

Here's one to get you thinking: At what point could an android be considered alive?
