Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Okay, here's the first word: _ P H I L _ Now, figure out what letters go in the blank spaces to form a common word. Then determine which of the descriptions or definitions below best apply to that word.

Answer: Where Jack and Jill went

The answer to this one is UPHILL as in the nursery rhyme description of where Jack and Jill went:

"Jack and Jill went up the hill
to fetch a pail of water.
Jack fell down and broke his crown,
And Jill came tumbling after."
2. _ _ _ _ D O N N A _

Answer: white wine

CHARDONNAY is one of the most popular white wines in the world. One convenient trait about the grape for winemakers is that whereas many grape varieties are either warm climate or cool climate friendly, chardonnay grows well almost anywhere.
3. G E N E _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

Answer: broad assumptions

GENERALITIES are broad sweeping statements of an indefinite or imprecise nature. The word comes from from the Old French "generalité", which in turn was derived from the Latin "generalitatem."
4. _ _ A B E _ _ _

Answer: disease

DIABETES. According to the American Diabetes Association around 30 million Americans have diabetes, and almost a third of those are undiagnosed. About 1.4 million Americans are diagnosed with it each year.
5. _ _ _ _ P E T E R

Answer: Louis Armstrong

Nicknamed Satchmo, Louis Armstrong was an iconic American jazz TRUMPETER and singer, and was a big influence in jazz music. He came to prominence in the 1920s; his inventiveness involved redirecting the concept of the music from group improvisation to solo performance. His unique, recognizable gravelly voice, became a go-to impersonation for many.
6. _ _ _ _ _ L O U _ _

Answer: melon

Actually the fruit that most people in the US call a CANTALOUPE is a muskmelon. The original use of the term cantaloupe was for a European melon. That fruit got its name from Cantalupo in Italy, near Rome, where it was supposedly grown in a Pope's castle's garden.
7. L E W _

Answer: lustful

Although the precise origin of this word is not known for sure, the Oxford English Dictionary theorizes that LEWD is from the Latin "laigo", and/or Latin "laicus" which meant "belonging to the people." In Old English "læwede" meant Unlearned or unschooled, and by 13th century Middle English, "leued" morphed form this "uneducated" sense of the word to "lustful" and "coarse."
8. J I L L _ _ _

Answer: large number

Though it doesn't actually refer to an exact number the way billion and million do, JILLION seems to have been coined around 1939 in the US as an informal way of expressing a very large number in the same way we say zillion.
9. _ R O N

Answer: element

The chemical symbol for IRON is Fe, and it is the fourth most common element on Earth since the Earth's core is thought to be composed mostly of it. It's a core part of a well-functioning human body too, as it helps carry blood through our system.
10. _ _ A N D Y (there are two words that fit this configuration and fortunately both fit the description!)

Answer: alcohol

Yes, if you thought of BRANDY (from the Dutch brandewijn meaning "burnt wine") that fit the description of alcohol. But maybe you figured out the word must be SHANDY, also an alcoholic beverage, which in the 19th century was a concoction of pink lemonade and beer. I think it has come to also be a mixture of beer and ginger ale, because that's what we drank in college sometimes during the 80s!
