Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I am an Oscar winning actress who played the part of Grace in the 1991 movie "Dead Again". At the time I was married to the movie's director, Kenneth Branagh. Who am I?

Answer: Emma Thompson

Emma Thompson is the daughter of Eric Thompson whom many Brits, of a certain age, will remember with gratitude as the man who wrote and narrated the script for the British version of "The Magic Roundabout", a pre-teatime treat on UK TV in the 1960s and 70s. She attended Cambridge University and was a member of the university's comedic Footlights society, alongside Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie.

Her working relationship with Branagh began in the 1987 TV series "Fortunes of War" and they were married from 1989 to 1995. Subsequently, she married Greg Wise in 2003.

Thompson is unusual in having won an Oscar both for acting ("Howard's End", 1992) and for writing ("Sense and Sensibility", 1996).
2. I am a singer whose popularity has grown over the years, despite my having only recorded one studio album by the time of my death in 1997. This album was titled "Grace" and included a recording of the song "Hallelujah" that has become a classic. Who am I?

Answer: Jeff Buckley

Buckley tragically drowned whilst swimming in the Mississippi river. This was shortly before the final stages of recording his second album "My Sweetheart the Drunk". His father, Tim Buckley, had also died young, in 1975, at the age of 28.

Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" has been covered many times but, of the well-known versions, Buckley's is the most idiosyncratic. In 2004, this version was rated at 259 on the "Rolling Stone" all-time Top 500 songs.

Jeff Beck played guitar with the Yardbirds and Jeff Beck Group as well as enjoying an illustrious solo career.

Jeff Healey was a blind Canadian musician, renowned not just for rock music but also for jazz and blues. With the "Jeff Healey Band" he was nominated for a Grammy in 1989, for the song "Hideaway".

If anybody comes across a Jeff Llamaboy please let me know. I would love to see him in concert!
3. I am an American actress and singer who was married to Eddie Fisher but lost him to another woman. My movie and television roles are many and include the part of Bobbi Adler, Grace's mother, in "Will and Grace". Who am I?

Answer: Debbie Reynolds

Reynolds is the true all-round performer. She proved she could dance whilst starring opposite Gene Kelly in "Singin' in the Rain". She proved she could act in countless TV shows and movies, not least "The Unsinkable Molly Brown", for which she was Oscar nominated. And she proved she could sing, with the song "Tammy", which was five weeks at Number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.

When Reynolds appeared in "Will and Grace" it was not the first time that she had played a sit-com mother. In 1997, she portrayed Dan Connor's mother, Audrey, in "Roseanne".

Eddie Fisher moved from Debbie Reynolds to Elizabeth Taylor, after the death of Michael Todd.
4. "Hail Mary, full of grace ... " I am the only one of these actresses not to have portrayed the Virgin Mary although there was considerable consternation in 2007 when it was reported that I had been offered the part. Who am I?

Answer: Britney Spears

The news that Spears had been offered the part of Mary in the satirical movie "Sweet Baby Jesus" had many journalists looking to see how they could use both stable and unstable in the same sentence! She finally declined the role which was taken up by Alison Pill.

A pregnant Keisha Castle-Hughes played Mary in the 2006 film "The Nativity Story". In 2004, she had become the youngest person to be nominated for a Best Actress Oscar for "Whale Rider".

Olivia Hussey played Mary in the 1977 TV mini-series "Jesus of Nazareth", which was directed by Franco Zeffirelli. The production included such luminaries as Anthony Quinn, Anne Bancroft and James Earl Jones.

Hunter's first movie was the slasher film, "The Burning" in 1981. She starred with Nicholas Cage and John Goodman in the Coen Brothers film, "Raising Arizona". In 1998, she appeared alongside Danny DeVito and Queen Latifah in the movie, "Living Out Loud".

"Saving Grace" first aired on TNT in July 2007. Hunter portrays an Oklahoma City detective, Grace Hanadarko, whose life was changed after an encounter with an angel.
6. With all the religious connotations attached to the word grace, it's perhaps not surprising that I, Grace Barnett Wing, declared that I wanted my child to be named "god". In the end, we decided on China. The father was fellow Jefferson Airplane musician Paul Kantner and I am better known by a different name. Who am I?

Answer: Grace Slick

Grace Barnett Wing was born in 1939. She gained her better known surname from first husband, Jerry Slick, whom she married in 1961. Together they formed a band called "The Great Society", prior to which Grace had been working as a model.

In 1966, she was invited to join the band Jefferson Airplane, which would later also exist in different entities as Jefferson Starship and Starship. They became one of the biggest groups of the late 1960s with hits such as "White Rabbit" and "Somebody to Love". Slick was talented as a singer, musician and songwriter, but also epitomised the drug espousing, rock chick image of the hippy era. This combination brought her to worldwide prominence.

China was born in 1971 and the references to "god" came in light-hearted banter with journalists. There is no truth in an urban legend that the name appears on the birth certificate.
7. I'm an American singer, best known for the hits "Both Sides Now", "Send in the Clowns" and a reworking of the Eighteenth Century hymn "Amazing Grace". Who am I?

Answer: Judy Collins

Judy Collins was born in Seattle, USA in 1939. She is a classically trained pianist who made her musical performance debut at the age of 13.

"Both Sides Now" was a Joni Mitchell song which Collins took to Number 8 on the Billboard Hot 100. "Send in the Clowns" was written by Stephen Sondheim and appeared in the musical "A Little Night Music". Collins' rendition of the song helped to win Sondheim a Grammy for best song in 1976.

"Amazing Grace" was a hymn by the English hymn-writer and former slave trader, John Newton. In 1970, Collins took the song to Number 15 on the Billboard Hot 100 and to Number 5 in the UK. In the UK it stayed on the chart for a massive 67 weeks. Possibly inspired by this, the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards released a bagpipe version that topped the charts for five weeks in 1972.
8. This Grace moved from being a country girl to high society. I married the Prince, starred with the Chairman and died like the Dean. Who am I?

Her death, in 1982, came via a car crash (as James Dean), after suffering a stroke.

Grace Moore was another American actress and singer who died in a 1947 plane crash at the age of 48.

Grace Jones is a Jamaican singer and actress best remembered for a series of dance hits and appearances in "Conan the Barbarian" and the Bond film "A View to a Kill".

Answer: Wynonna Judd

Naomi and Wynonna were phenomenally successful as the Judds. Wynonna began a solo career in 1991 after Naomi was incapacitated with Hepatitis C. Her debut album "Wynonna", from which her first three singles were taken, was certified as 5x Multi-Platinum.
10. In 1894 Grace Toof, the daughter of a newspaper publisher, bought 323 acres of land in Tennessee, America. In 1939, a house was built on this land and took her name. This name was also used as the title of a best-selling Paul Simon album. I am an actor and singer who bought the house and land in 1957 and am now buried there. Who am I?

Answer: Elvis Presley

I daresay that a few of you have been looking out for this question since the beginning of the quiz so I hope you got it right!

S. E. Toof was proprietor of the "Memphis Daily Appeal". In 1901 an adjoining plot was bought in the name of Grace's mother, Mary. The land was undeveloped until 1939, when it was divided. The house "Graceland" was built by Grace's niece, Ruth, on her portion. It was built on "Grace's land" and so Ruth named the house in honour of her aunt.

Elvis bought "Graceland" in 1957 on the recommendation of his parents. They are buried alongside him and his grandmother.
