Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Known as the "Naked Chef", he was awarded the MBE for his services to food, and that was before he started reforming British school dinners. Who is this pukka chef?

Answer: Jamie Oliver

Naturally, the "Naked Chef" (1998-1999) was not about nudity, but about Jamie's back-to-basics cooking style, encouraging people to cook real food with proper ingredients. Instantly popular, his TV programs have screened in over 40 countries, including the US, making him a truly international food celebrity.
2. He is head chef at El Bulli, judged as "Number One Restaurant in the World" by Restaurant Magazine no less than five times. Who is this innovative Spanish celebrity chef?

Answer: Ferran Adriŕ

Adriŕ is widely regarded as one of the creators of "molecular gastronomy" (though he himself does not like to use the term) and the inventor of "culinary foam". His cooking is said to be bizarre, amazing and brilliant, by those who can afford to eat at his restaurant (and can get a reservation).
3. Although he was born in Massachusetts, his cooking is the very essence of the American South. If I tell you to "kick it up a notch" then which celebrity chef must I be talking about?

Answer: Emeril Lagasse

Lagasse is notable for his lively and jovial style, his expertise in Cajun and Creole cuisine, and his many catchphrases, such as "BAM!" He owns a string of restaurants across the US, and has a range of food products, including his signature spice blend, "Essence of Emeril".
4. This British celebrity chef moved at River Cottage in 1997, to live as a smallholder, and made a number of popular TV series about it. Who is this fearless cook?

Answer: Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall

He became known as "Hugh Fearlessly-Eatsitall" after a series called "A Cook on the Wild Side" (1997), in which he drove around Britain eating the hedgerows and collecting roadkill. It was the various "River Cottage" series that made him a food celebrity however, along with the "River Cottage" cookbooks. He now owns a 40-acre farm in Dorset, not far from River Cottage.
5. He was born in London, considers himself a Scot, got his big break in New Zealand with the advent of television, and became famous in the US. Who is this "Galloping Gourmet"?

Answer: Graham Kerr

The title "Galloping Gourmet" comes from a 1967 book written with wine expert Len Evans, in which they "galloped" around the world in 35 days, seeking out the finest restaurants of the time. Kerr would enter the studio at a run, leaping over a chair to open every episode of the "Galloping Gourmet" (1969-1971). After a car accident in 1971, Kerr became a Christian, and his cuisine soon took a healthier direction.
6. Born in Austria, he learned to cook from his mother, apprenticed in Provence, and emigrated to the US at 25, where he achieved fame and fortune. Which celebrity chef encourages us to "Live, Love, Eat!"?

Answer: Wolfgang Puck

Wolfgang Puck is truly a celebrities' celebrity chef. He is the official caterer for the Academy Awards Governors Ball, and has appeared on mainstream TV shows such as "Frasier" and "Las Vegas". And that doesn't include the string of restaurants and the cooking shows on the Food Network!
7. Almost entirely self-taught, he is chef-owner of "The Fat Duck", voted Britain's best restaurant, and second-best in the world. Famous for his snail porridge, and his bacon and egg ice cream, who is this culinary alchemist?

Answer: Heston Blumenthal

Heston Blumenthal is perhaps best known for the BBC TV series "In Search of Perfection" (2006-2007) in which he attempts to perfect everyday dishes like fish & chips and hamburgers. He is an exponent of using modern food science and innovative technology in the kitchen, such as using a vacuum to aerate melted chocolate and create a novel form of chocolate mousse.
8. His degree is in drama, and his background is in film. Dissatisfied with the quality of cooking shows on TV, he went to culinary school, so he could give us "Good Eats". Who is this educational TV chef?

Answer: Alton Brown

Alton's series "Good Eats" (1999-present) is not to everyone's taste, but that didn't stop "Bon Appétit" magazine naming him "Cooking Teacher of the Year" in 2004. He is also the expert commentator on "Iron Chef America" (first aired in 2004).
9. He was born in London, of Jamaican heritage, and he's black, bald, and bold! Which celebrity chef "tickles those taste buds" as presenter of "Ready, Steady, Cook" in the UK?

Answer: Ainsley Harriott

Ainsley is well known for his loud shirts and loud personality. He has made several TV series besides "Ready, Steady, Cook" (2000-present), including his "Barbecue Bible" (1997) and "Big Cook Out" (1999). He has published a number of (very useful, in my opinion) cookbooks, and has his own line of grocery products. The other chefs listed all appear regularly on "Ready, Steady, Cook".
10. Which British celebrity chef, famous for fish, is closely associated with the Cornish town of Padstow?

Answer: Rick Stein

Rick owns two restaurants, a bistro, a fish & chip shop, a seafood deli, a gift shop and a cookery school in Padstow - so great is his influence on the local economy that they call it "Padstein" much to his annoyance. He also has a pub in nearby St Merryn called "The Cornish Arms" and is opening another restaurant, on the other side of the world, in Mollymook, New South Wales. He is celebrated for several TV series, including "Taste of the Sea" (1995) and "French Odyssey" (2005), and has written several award winning cookbooks.
