Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, (over 3,000 miles from Phoenix, Arizona) Joaquin Phoenix is an actor with several Oscar nominations for acting, winning for "Joker" in 2020. He was nominated for all of these other films EXCEPT for which?

Answer: Her

Joaquin's late brother River Phoenix (another Celebrity with a city surname) was also an Oscar nominee, earning a Supporting Actor nod for "Running On Empty". Joaquin's first Oscar nomination was for "Gladiator" in 2001, playing Commodus, the son of the Emperor who passes the throne onto General Maximus, instead of his own son.

His Oscar nomination for 2013's "The Master" was for Best Actor, and was his Oscar nomination for "Walk the Line" (2006).
2. Which of these Paris-related endeavors did Paris Hilton NOT attempt?

Answer: Invested in a Las Vegas casino called The Parisian

In 2005, Paris actually missed the grand opening of her nightclub on New Year's Eve. That same year, she launched the "Paris Hilton" perfume on Valentine's Day in 2005, and fittingly, she promoted it in Paris, France. In addition to that perfume she has also released perfumes called "Heiress" and "Just Me".

When she was only 14, Paris met boyfriend Paris Latsis at a nightclub when he was 16-years-old. They became engaged on May 25, 2005, and she contacted Prince Charles to ask permission if they could be married in either Westminster Abbey, St. Paul's Cathedral, or Windsor Castle.
3. While comedian Orlando Jones was fired from the TV show "American Gods" actor Orlando Bloom, on the other hand, benefited from Ashton Kutcher's getting fired from what film?

Answer: Elizabethtown

Orlando Jones says he was fired from the show "American Gods" because the new show runner felt Orlando was sending "the wrong message for Black America". A spokesperson for that show said that Orlando's character was simply not in the portion of the book that they were focusing on for Season 3.

Ashton Kutcher was fired from the 2005 film "Elizabethtown" because as he says "It wasn't working out." The director, Cameron Crowe even admits that they wanted Orlando Bloom from the get-go but he was tied up shooting "Black Hawk Down". Kutcher says that his progress in the rehearsals wasn't rising up to expectations, so when Orlando Bloom was available, they replaced Ashton with Orlando.
4. British actor Andrew Lincoln appeared in the films "Love Actually" and also starred in which of these cable TV series?

Answer: The Walking Dead

You'd never know it, but Andrew Lincoln (the city of Lincoln is the capital of the state of Nebraska) disguises his British accent perfectly when portraying Rick Grimes, a sheriff outside Atlanta, Georgia who wakes up from a coma in a hospital. He discovers the world has been overrun with zombies, in the amazing AMC series "The Walking Dead".

His role was almost played by actor Thomas Jane when creator Frank Darabont was negotiating with HBO. But those talks fell apart and he took the show to AMC.
5. "The Future Project" in Sydney, Australia proposes more greenery for the city's streets along with technology. Actor Sydney Greenstreet would've been a perfect celebrity spokesperson for it! Born in Kent, England Sydney Greenstreet co-starred in the 1942 film "Across the Pacific" with Humphrey Bogart for which Sydney won a "Best Acting" Award from the National Board of Review. For what film was Sydney's sole Oscar nomination?

Answer: The Maltese Falcon

Sydney Greenstreet played Dr. H.F.G. Lorenz in "Across the Pacific" a film that reunited Bogart, Mary Astor and John Huston after they made the cinema classic "The Maltese Falcon" the year before. In both these films Sydney honed his reputation as an actor who portrayed cagey characters.

His Lorenz has intentions toward Bogart's Rick Leland (a disgruntled court-martialed Army captain, leaving the U.S. and heading for Asia) that are kept mysterious for most of the film. In "The Maltese Falcon" his Kaspar Gutman's feigned civility masks a ruthless villain. If playing phonetically counted, the director of both these films, John Huston indeed would have counted as a "City Folk" due to Houston, Texas but alas spelling counts in this quiz's concept.
6. Can you name the celebrity whose first name was given to her because it was the name of a town near where she was born in Olmsted County, Minnesota? She took on her stage surname because of her father's album that was playing in the background when she was asked what name she wanted to go by in the credits of her first big breakout film role, playing Rina opposite Corey Haim?

Answer: Winona Ryder

Winona Laura Horowitz was born October 29, 1971, and was named after the nearby town of Winona. When she was 13-years-old she auditioned for a film called "Desert Bloom" and although she didn't get the role, David Seltzer, the director of another film called "Lucas" had seen her audition and liked it.

He cast her in his film. When she was contacted by phone and was asked how she wanted her name to be listed in the credits, she was listening to her father's album in the background. The group playing was Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels, a group whose name I'll keep in my pocket for that quiz I'll write about someday, called "Rock Groups with Cities in Their Name".
7. Singer Whitney Houston is a double-city contender in this category. Her surname is the same as Houston, Texas but her middle name is also a city, one only 9 miles away from Newark, New Jersey where she was born. What is her middle name, derived the Hebrew name, meaning "My God is an oath"?

Answer: Elizabeth

Whitney Elizabeth Houston was born August 9, 1963, in Newark, into a family of celebrities including her mother, gospel singer Cissy Houston, and her cousin, singing legend Dionne Warwick. She's also the goddaughter of soul singer Aretha Franklin. Elizabeth, New Jersey was originally named Elizabethtown after the wife of statesman Sir George Carteret.
8. Cheyenne is the capital city of the sate of Wyoming. In addition to his guest roles in "Glee" and "30 Rock", singer/actor Cheyenne Jackson starred in the 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th seasons of what TV series?

Answer: American Horror Story

Mr. Jackson played Will Drake in "American Horror Story's" 5th Season called "Hotel"; Will Drake is the newest buyer/owner of the Hotel Cortez in Los Angeles, which becomes the focal point for the search of a serial killer. In Season 6, called "Roanoke" Cheyenne plays Sidney James the Executive Producer of a documentary called "My Roanoke Nightmare" being made within the episode. In Season 7, called "Cult", he plays a psychiatrist named Dr. Rudy Vincent.
In Season 8, called "Apocalypse" Cheyenne plays John Henry Moore a teacher at the Hawthorne School for Exceptional Young Men.
9. Bob Denver (Denver is the capital city of Colorado) played the lovably goofy Gilligan on "Gilligan's Island" but did you know that Bob Denver is close to a record for playing the same character on multiple TV series? Yes, he appeared as his character Gilligan on 7 different TV shows actually. Which of these was NOT one of them?

Answer: Lost

Although "Lost" was also a show about a group of people stranded on a tropical island, Gilligan was not among those marooned passengers from Oceanic Flight 815. Bob Denver popped up as Gilligan on the show "The New Gidget" in 1987 on an episode called "Gilligidge Island".
On a 1987 episode of "ALF" called "The Ballad of Gilligan's Island" there is a dream episode in which Willie encounters Gilligan and the other cast members of "Gilligan's Island".
An here's an episode I am dying to track down and see because it sounds so out of the box: On an episode of "Baywatch" called "Now Sit Right Back and You'll Hear a Tale", Bob Denver appears playing Gilligan. According to imdb.com the plot involves Eddie Kramer (Eddie Warlock) hitting his head after a fall. He and Shauni (Erika Eleniak) then set out on a mission to rescue a jet skier. It is the beginning of a dream episode, the staple episode of many sitcoms. Eddie finds the real Gilligan and Mary Ann stranded on an island. Eddie and Shauni take them to Baywatch headquarters and they find that "Baywatch" characters have morphed into amalgams of "Gilligan's Island" characters. It gets even weirder. I don't want to read the rest of the plot synopsis--I want to be surprised.
The other three TV series in which Bob Denver plays Gilligan are "The New Adventures of Gilligan" (1974), "Gilligan's Planet"(1982) and "Meego" (1997).
10. And we'll end with a DOUBLE-city named City Folk. Henderson, Nevada is that state's second largest city, right behind Las Vegas, and Florence is the capital city of Italy's Tuscany region. Florence Henderson, of the Brady Bunch was the headliner at the Smith Center in Las Vegas for an AIDS benefit. Which of these was NOT amongst her other career accolades?

Answer: Nominated 4 times for Tony Awards in a musical, all for supporting actress

Florence was never even nominated for a Tony Award despite having a successful Broadway career.

In addition to that "Pop Culture Award" TV Land also teamed up with "Entertainment Weekly" in 2007 to rank Florence Henderson at Number 54 on the list of the 100 Greatest TV Icons. That was primarily for her role as Carol Brady on "The Brady Bunch".

In 1962, she became the first woman to guest host "The Tonight Show"--it was during the interim in between Jack Paar's tenure as host and when Johnny Carson took over as the longtime legendary host of that show. 45 years later, in 2007, she would host her own talk show, "The Florence Henderson Show" on the Retirement Living Network.

She also appeared as more different characters "The Love Boat" than anyone else: 8 characters in 10 episodes. She played all these characters in episodes from 1977 to 1987. I actually count Arte Johnson as also playing 8 different characters, but in only 8 episodes, so maybe we can give Florence the tie-breaker edge.
