Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Although we know him as Christopher Lee, that was not his full name. What was it?

Answer: Christopher Frank Carandini Lee

Christopher Lee was born in 1922. His father was Geoffrey Trollope Lee, Lieutenant Colonel of the 60th King's Royal Rifles Corps. His mother was Countess Estelle Marie. His only sibling was a sister, Xandra Carandini Lee. Sir Christopher Lee was a distant relative of the legendary Confederate general Robert E. Lee.
2. Sir Christopher Lee was born in England, but when his parents divorced he and his sister followed their mother to which European country?

Answer: Switzerland

They lived in the city of Wengen. It was during his stay in Switzerland that Christopher Lee played his first role, Rumpelstiltskin, when he was a student in Miss Fisher's Academy in Territet.
3. At the outbreak of World War II, Christopher Lee volunteered to fight for the forces of one of the two belligerents of the Winter War of 1939. Which one?

Answer: Finland

Although they were kept out of combat, Lee and the other British volunteers were issued winter gear and were posted as guards at safe distance from the front. Lee remained there for two weeks. Afterwards, he served at the US Lines, Beecham's and the London Home Guard, before joining the RAF after his father's death.
4. During the Second World War, did Christopher Lee ever serve in the SAS?

Answer: Yes

Although we know that he was in both the SAS and the Long Range Desert Patrol, we know neither when nor what he did. He refused to go into details, since he and his comrades were forbidden to speak of their tasks.
5. After WWII, a cousin of Christopher Lee's persuaded him to follow an acting career. What was that famous relation's profession?

Answer: The Italian Ambassador to Britain

The cousin's name was Nicolo Carandini. Carandini came up with that idea while he and Christopher were dining, and Christopher began to speak of his war wounds. Lee's mother was not so glad when she heard of her son's decision, but relented when he reminded her of the successful Carandini performers of Australia.
6. In 1947, Christopher Lee made his acting debut in a film directed by Terence Young. What was the film's name?

Answer: Corridor of Mirrors

The film was also Terence Young's debut as a director. It was based on a book by Christopher Massie. The main protagonists were Eric Portman and Edana Romney. Lee had a minor role, that of the character Charles.
7. A major breakthrough in Christopher Lee's career was the film "The Curse of Frankenstein" (1957), where he portrayed Frankenstein's monster. Who was Lee's co-star, the actor who portrayed Dr. Frankenstein?

Answer: Peter Cushing

The film was Christopher Lee's first work for Hammer and the fist of approximately 20 films in which Lee and Cushing were co-stars. The two actors finally became close friends. Lee's performance as Frankenstein's monster ultimately led to his being selected to portray Dracula in a series of films.
8. Perhaps the most well-known role of Christopher Lee's is Count Dracula, a character he portrayed in seven films. What was the title of the last of those films?

Answer: The Satanic Rites of Dracula

The 1973's film's tagline was "Dracula is Dead... and Well and Living in London". Christopher Lee participated in the film, but under pressure. The film, as well as its predecessor "Dracula A.D. 1972", both attempted to bring the character into the twentieth century and both were box office bombs.
9. One of Christopher Lee's most famous roles was that of a villain in a James Bond film. Which one?

Answer: The Man With the Golden Gun

In "The Man With the Golden Gun" (1974), Christopher Lee starred opposite Roger Moore. Lee played the part of the deadly assassin Francisco Scaramanga, the eponymous man with the Golden Gun. He remarked of his role as Scaramanga: "In Fleming's novel he's just a West Indian thug, but in the film he's charming, elegant, amusing, lethal... I played him like the dark side of Bond."
10. Since this is the last question, it would be fitting to ask: what was the last film in which Christopher Lee participated, excluding the ones he took part in as voice actor?

Answer: The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies

Sir Christopher Lee's final role was that of the wizard Saruman the White in 2014, a part he had played earlier in the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy. Of all the cast in both trilogies, which are based on the Middle-Earth legends of J.R.R. Tolkien, Christopher Lee was the only one who had met the author and was a close friend of his. Lee had once said that he read Tolkien's books at least once a year and that Tolkien's writing was almost unparalleled in contemporary literature.
