Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Leonard Nimoy had a very long career in TV and film, starting with his first onscreen role in 1951. What movie did he debut in?

Answer: Queen for a Day

He made his screen debut with an appearance in just a single scene in "Queen for a Day". He was credited with the misspelled last name of Nemoy. This was better than his next few roles which were all uncredited.

"Queen for a Day" was released in 1951 and was a dramatic telling of the behind the scenes of a TV game show of the same name. The show began airing in 1945.
2. Nimoy's most famous role was, of course, Mr. Spock in the many iterations of "Star Trek" on the big and small screen. Did he appear in more TV series or movies as the character Mr. Spock?

Answer: Movies

He played Spock in the original series in all 80 "Star Trek" episodes, and also appeared in "Star Trek: The Animated Series" as a voice actor and "Star Trek: The Next Generation".

He also played Mr. Spock in one episode of "The Big Bang Theory", and one episode of "Futurama" bringing his total number of series to five.

He was in the first six "Trek" films, and two of the rebooted "Trek" films that were directed by JJ Abrams, bringing his total to eight films.
3. Leonard Nimoy died in February 2015 at his Los Angeles home. He was 83 at the time of his death. What city, known for its famous tea party, was he born in?

Answer: Boston

Nimoy was born in March of 1931 to parents who were both Ukrainian immigrants. His parents owned a barbershop, but supported his love of acting.

He got his first role in community theater at the age of eight.
4. Nimoy directed which 1987 film? It was the first movie he directed that he didn't also appear in.

Answer: 3 Men and a Baby

All four were projects that Nimoy directed. "3 Men and a Baby" was the highest grossing movie of 1987, and followed the fourth "Star Trek" film.

With those two back-to-back commercial successes, Nimoy could have directed just about any project he wanted, but instead he chose to step away from that aspect of the industry and resume his acting career.

All said, he directed only six movies in his career.
5. Released in 2013 and reprising a character he had played before, what was the final movie that Nimoy appeared in?

Answer: Star Trek: Into Darkness

In what turned out to be his final onscreen appearance in TV or the movies, Nimoy reprised his role as Spock Prime in the rebooted "Trek" film series. He was the only link to the old universe in the first two rebooted movies. Nimoy's final TV appearance was on "Fringe" in 2012.

The second movie in the rebooted Trek series starred Chris Pine as Kirk and Zachary Quinto as Spock. It was a re-imagining of the second film in the original series, bringing back the main villain, but telling a completely different story.
6. Prior to breaking out as a film and television star, Nimoy served the United States in what branch of the military?

Answer: Army Reserves

He rose to the rank of sergeant before leaving the service to further his acting career.

A fire destroyed most of his service records, but what is known is that he spent most of his time at Ft. McPherson, and oversaw a unit that included future TV star Ken Berry.
7. Nimoy shared the screen, big and small, with William Shatner more than a dozen times in his career. Other than in "Star Trek" and related appearances, what television show did they both appear on?

Answer: TJ Hooker

Nimoy directed an episode of "TJ Hooker", and made a guest appearance on another episode, both in 1983. It was during that same time span that he was directing Shatner in two different "Star Trek" movies.

The two men were good friends, with Nimoy serving as the best man at Shatner's third wedding.

The two have appeared in seven total TV series with each other. The other shows are "The Man from U.N.C.L.E", "Mission: Impossible", "Star Trek: The Animated Series", "Futurama" and "The $10,000 Pyramid".

"TJ Hooker" starred Shatner and was about a police officer who late in his career was demoted back down to a patrol officer.
8. During his life Nimoy was a published photographer, served in the military and made it on the Billboard recording charts, and was obviously a well known actor. What did he study at college in the early 1950s?

Answer: Drama

Nimoy attended Boston University for several years to study drama because his parents insisted he obtain a college degree. He graduated in 1953.

After college he enrolled in the military. Later in life he went back and earned a Master's Degree in Education from Antioch University, graduating in 2000.
9. Leonard Nimoy was considered for a role on "Mission Impossible" when it debuted in 1966, but he couldn't take it due to his role on "Star Trek". After the latter show was cancelled, he joined the cast in 1969. What was his character's name on "Mission Impossible"?

Answer: Paris

"Mission Impossible" ran from 1966-1973, but Nimoy was only on it for 49 episodes from '69-71. He also played a character named Emil Vautrain in the 1970 episode titled "The Choice". Vautrain was a character that had a striking resemblance to Paris.
10. Leonard Nimoy penned two autobiographical books during his life. The first was in 1975, the second decades later. What was the title of his second autobiography?

Answer: I Am Spock

In 1975, Nimoy angered "Star Trek" fans with the release of "I Am Not Spock".

The controversy was when fans read only the title and not the book. Nimoy wasn't trying to distance himself from the role, only pointing out that he was an actor able to play several roles.

Starting in 1980 he reprised the role of Spock in several "Trek" films, and episodes of "Star Trek: The Next Generation".

Two decades after he wrote the first book, the second book "I Am Spock" was released in 1995. The second book was inspired by the title of the first. He stated during the press tour that his feelings on the character had not changed over the years.
