Margaret Dumont's characters fell in love with Groucho's on numerous occasions, were punched in the stomach by Harpo, sharped at cards by Chico and Harpo, and had house party after house party ruined by their combined antics. The poor dear never really understood their brand of humour - and it is to this fact that Groucho attributed the success of their professional relationship.

As a teenager, Harpo lost his job playing one-handed piano in a dodgy bar because the furious owner believed whole-heartedly that he was Chico.

No audience to a Marx Brothers' film starring him can help but sympathise with Groucho's admonition: 'Don't point that beard at me - it might go off' - for Ruman sported a meticulously sculptured and very pointed ginger beard. Walter Woolf King starred as the puffed-up opera star Rudolfo Lasparri in 'A Night at the Opera' and Giermann played Ruman's sword-brandishing henchman Kurt in 'A Night in Casablanca'. Karloff, of course, sadly never starred in a Marx Brothers picture.

His Highness was the last person from whom Harpo might have expected such a prank.
