Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which actress plays the role of Helen Archer in the long-running radio soap opera?

Answer: Louiza Patikas

Helen Archer was born in 1979 and has had a very eventful life, although most of those events have not been happy ones. Despite being born into a loving family and growing up on a prosperous family-owned farm, Helen has long suffered from issues of self-confidence. She has also had terrible luck in her romantic relationships.
2. What are the names of Helen's parents who run Bridge Farm?

Answer: Pat and Tony

Pat and Tony have run Bridge Farm for many years. They now share much of the day to day running of the farm and its food shop with their family. Pat is a very caring and involved mother who is fiercely protective of her children, particularly Helen. Pat and Tony are both acutely aware of the difficulties Helen has experienced and are usually quite careful not to upset her in any way. Pat is played by Patricia Gallimore while Tony is portrayed by David Troughton who took over the role from Colin Skipp in 2014.
3. Helen had an older brother called John who died in 1998 following what kind of accident?

Answer: He was crushed by a tractor

Tony found John dead in a ditch having been crushed by his own beloved tractor. This tragedy took place on Helen's youngest brother's birthday. It was Tony who had a run-in with an angry bull when one of Bridge Farm's prize beasts charged at him and left him seriously injured in hospital.

In 2011 Pat discovered that John had fathered a child with his former girlfriend, Sharon, shortly before he died. Pat and Tony were anxious to get to know their long-lost grandson but Helen and her younger brother were more reticent, fearful that this newcomer might cut into their Bridge Farm inheritance.

However, Johnny came to live with the Bridge Farm Archers in 2014 and appears to have settled in well, becoming a great help to the family with his natural farming abilities.
4. What is the name of Helen's younger brother who is the proud owner of a pig empire?

Answer: Tom

Although Tom has always been an ambitious business man, dedicated to selling his high-end sausages and other pork-based products to the big supermarkets, he has not always been successful. Some of his business set-backs were due to issues beyond his control, but others were his fault, such as his ill-advised fling with a supermarket buyer which ended badly for both him and his sausages. Tom has also had a checkered romantic history, he was heartbroken when his long-term girlfriend Brenda, unwilling to compete with the pigs for Tom's attention, ended their relationship in 2013. Tom reunited with former girlfriend, Kirsty Miller, and the duo were soon engaged.

However, Tom was still not over his relationship with Brenda and had distinctly cold feet about marrying Kirsty and, even more unfortunately, he did not choose to tell her about this until the day of their wedding when he left her at the altar. Kirsty and Helen had been great friends and this betrayal put a strain on their friendship since Helen had had an inkling about Tom's doubts and had not warned Kirsty.

However, when Kirsty returned to Ambridge she forgave Helen and was a great friend to her when she needed her the most. Tom is played by William Troughton whose father, David, plays his on air father Tony.
5. What was the name of Helen's first serious boyfriend who suffered from depression and tragically committed suicide in 2004?

Answer: Greg Turner

The relationship between the young and impressionable Helen and the much older gamekeeper, Greg Turner, seemed doomed from the start. Pat and Tony were concerned about the relationship for a number of reasons, not just the age difference. Greg was quite withdrawn and secretive and he withheld important information, such as the fact that he was divorced with two daughters and that he had previously had a vasectomy, from Helen until they had been together for some time.

Despite these revelations Helen moved in with Greg in 2002 and did her best to support him in seeking a closer relationship with his daughters who were living in France with their mother.

Unfortunately, despite Helen's best efforts, Greg's abrasive attitude put him at constant odds with his bosses and further alienated him from his daughters when he behaved badly during their visit to Ambridge. Greg's behaviour deteriorated as his depression deepened and he ended up losing his job and physically attacking Helen.

After Helen had moved out and he was no longer allowed contact with his daughters, Greg shot himself.

Helen was devastated by Greg's death and began to suffer from a number of issues including anorexia as a result. It also made her wary of relationships.
6. What is the name of Helen's best friend who works as a chef at Grey Gables and is married to Helen's cousin Adam?

Answer: Ian Craig

Ian and Helen have been friends for some time. Ian is played by Stephen Kennedy and is a kind and caring character who can also be blunt and straightforward when the need arises. Ian's friendship with Helen came to an abrupt end when he discovered that she had seen his husband, Adam Macy, kissing another man and had not informed him. Ian and Adam became the first same sex couple to marry in a British soap opera when they entered into a civil partnership in 2006.

The couple renewed their commitment to each other in December 2015, after the law had finally been changed to allow same sex couples to marry in civil ceremonies on the same terms as opposite sex couples.
7. What is the name of the award-winning cheese which Helen manufactures?

Answer: Borsetshire Blue

Helen is a firm believer in the virtues of healthy and organic food and takes a great delight in her famous signature cheese. Borsetshire Blue has won local food awards and is a popular product in the Bridge Farm shop.
8. In 2010 Helen gave up on ever finding 'Mr. Right' and decided that she would embark on solo parenthood. What was the name of Helen's little boy, dramatically born at the beginning of 2011?

Answer: Henry

Helen's parents, particularly her father, were concerned by her decision to go it alone but Helen was sure she would cope. After undergoing artificial insemination Helen became pregnant in spring 2010 and, after a traumatic labour, Henry was safely delivered by Caesarean section.

As little Henry was entering the world of 'The Archers', the beloved character Nigel Pargetter was leaving it when he fell off a roof while attempting to retrieve a banner.
9. Just as things seemed to be settling down for Helen she was swept off her feet by which dashing newcomer to the village with whom she began an affair?

Answer: Rob Titchener

Rob came to Ambridge to set up and run Borchester Land's 'mega dairy' leaving his wife, Jess, back in Hampshire nursing her ill father. Rob became something of a local hero when he rescued three Ambridge residents during the great floods of 2014. When Helen and Rob's affair intensified Rob eventually chose Helen over Jess and began divorce proceedings.

Helen and Rob's relationship moved on quickly from there and, after a whirlwind engagement, they married secretly during a holiday to the Isle of Wight.

Helen was initially smitten with her charming, caring and protective husband, but she and the listeners gradually realised that Rob was a controlling psychopath. Despite having always been something of a control freak who hated being told what to do, Helen became a meek obedient wife who did what Rob told her. Rob slowly eroded Helen's self-confidence, making her feel unattractive and inept.

He persuaded her to give up driving and gradually took over her job at Bridge Farm. Rob also sabotaged her friendship with Ian by telling him that Helen had seen Ian's husband kissing Rob's boss Charlie and attempted to prevent Helen from seeing Kirsty. Rob also undermined Helen's relationship with Henry and the rest of her family and forced her to become pregnant before she was ready. Rob is played by Timothy Watson.
10. For what crime was Helen arrested in April 2016?

Answer: Attempted murder

Rob's controlling behaviour had continued to worsen, he even invited his mother, Ursula, to come and stay with them so he could monitor Helen more efficiently. Helen seemed to be slowly accepting what was happening to her, though she was still in some denial.

However, when she discovered that Rob intended to send Henry to boarding school without her knowledge and when Rob slapped her and sexually assaulted her, she seemed to be realising that she had to take action. Kirsty, who had never liked or trusted Rob, had also become increasingly concerned about Helen and begged her to leave the relationship. Eventually, after a discussion with Rob's ex-wife Jess, Helen decided to leave Rob.

Unfortunately, Rob came home and discovered her half-packed bag. An altercation ensued and, when Helen feared that Rob was going to hurt Henry, she stabbed and severely injured him.

She was charged with attempted murder and her trial set for September 2016. Many listeners and groups who deal with domestic violence have praised the Rob and Helen storyline for its treatment of the subject of coercive control, where an intimate partner uses insidious controlling behaviour to keep their partner in check.

However, some listeners have complained that the storyline is far too dark for a show like 'The Archers' and that the storyline has taken over the programme, crowding out other characters.
