Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. One of my favourites for all-round entertainment is this indoor coaster at Warner Brothers Movie World. Laser effects, animatronics and a clever track combine for an exciting ride in the dark. What is it called?

Answer: Scooby-Doo Spooky Coaster

The $13M ride was made by Heinrich Mack GmbH & Co. of Germany. The 530m of track take 253 seconds to ride. This is a great dark-coaster with lots of surprises which I won't divulge in case you haven't ridden it, but I can say it has a number of unusual technological devices including a rotating station.

It seems higher than the maximum 17m and faster than the 44km/h and those sharp corners are a bit scary.
2. Dreamworld has a steel coaster with a 360-degree loop and "screaming sidewinder". What is the name of the roller coaster which came to Dreamworld from Luna Park Sydney?

Answer: Cyclone

Reaching speeds of 85km/h, the Cyclone is a fun steel coaster.
Thunderbolt is the coaster that was at Dreamworld from 1982 to 2003.
Eureka Mine Ride is a dark coaster in mine carts.
3. Luna Park in Melbourne has the oldest continually-operating roller coaster in the world. What is the name of this icon?

Answer: Scenic Railway

This coaster was installed in the park in 1912, and there are only nine of its kind left in the world.
4. Sea World has a steel looping coaster. What is the name of this ride?

Answer: Corkscrew

The Corkscrew has a double corkscrew and one standard loop and is still a great coaster ride, even after more than 20 years of service (it was installed in 1982). It's also Sea World's only decent thrill ride for those of us who have graduated from carousels.
5. Luna Park Sydney's most famous icon would have to be its large wooden coaster called "The Big Dipper", built circa 1923. Can you still ride this attraction?

Answer: No

The wooden Big Dipper was a a major ride and dominated Luna Park's skyline for many years. It was replaced by a steel coaster (maybe in the 80's) but noise restraints made the removal of that coaster necessary as well (during redevelopment).
6. What type of roller coaster is "Lethal Weapon- The Ride" at Warner Brothers Movie World?

Answer: a suspended coaster

It's quite a fast inverted coaster, the 85mk/h ride has plenty of thrills, 4 Gs and 5 inversions over the 765m of track.
7. The first looping roller coaster in Australia, this coaster thrilled riders from 1982 to 2003. What is its name and what park was it in?

Answer: Thunderbolt, Dreamworld

Reputed for its rough and wild ride, the Thunderbolt thrilled people for many years with its double loop and bone-jarring track.
8. This coaster at Dreamworld is one of the world's fastest, tallest rides. The ride uses electro-magnetic power to speed a single carriage to 161km/h in just 7 seconds. What is it called?

Answer: Tower of Terror

The Tower of Terror sends riders up 38 stories, and after 6.5 seconds of weightlessness they freefall backwards along the same track. It is classified as a roller coaster despite its simple track, and is a fantastic thrill ride.
9. At Dreamworld you can ride a mine cart coaster which hurtles in an out of a mountain and has plenty of dark sections. What is this ride called?

Answer: Eureka Mountain Mine Ride

Big Thunder Mountain is a Disneyland Ride (at a number of parks).
Runaway Mine Train is at Alton Towers.
Ghost rider is the 4500 feet long woodie at Knott's Berry Farm.
I have been on all four of these, and they are all great rides.
10. Despite having a ride called "Speed Coaster", which of these parks has no roller coasters at all?

Answer: Wet 'n' Wild

Sad but true. Wet 'n' Wild is a water park, and despite having no roller coasters, has some thrilling water slides of its own- the high-speed twister always sends water up my nose, the speed coaster is wildly fast, Terror Canyon I and II are fast AND dark, and if that adrenaline isn't enough for you, the Double Screamer toboggan ride should be.
That's where my quiz ends as I have exhausted the list of Australian coasters worth a mention (for now). I hope you enjoyed testing you knowledge and hope you continue to enjoy trying out all those coasters!
