Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How many attractions were open in Tomorrowland on the Magic Kingdom's opening day on October 1, 1971?

Answer: Two

Since Tomorrowland was not finished at the time, only two attractions were up and running for guests on that glorious October day. "Grand Prix Raceway" and "Skyway to Fantasyland" were operational in Tomorrowland. Ironic enough, these attractions do not exist anymore.

After a small refurbishment, the "Grand Prix Raceway" was renamed "Tomorrowland Indy Speedway" in 1994 and "Skyway to Fantasyland" closed in 1999.
2. When the Magic Kingdom opened in 1971, Tomorrowland was unfinished.

Answer: True

Like its Disneyland counterpart, the famed land was opened uncompleted for the park's opening in the early 70's. Tomorrowland was completed by 1975 with its original design.
3. Space Mountain was one of the Magic Kingdom's most popular attractions. It was one of the first roller coasters to be completely indoors in order to give the effect of traveling through space. Space Mountain's iconic silhouette could be seen from miles away. It featured a white, stone facade with the concrete beams to support the roof outside of the attraction building instead of on the inside. Whose idea was it to put the support beams for Space Mountain visible?

Answer: John Hench

The brilliant Imagineer insisted the concrete beams outside of the show building for two main reasons: it allowed the inside to have a smooth surface so the star field and meteors could be projected clearly and that the columns would create forced perspective on the exterior, making Space Mountain appear taller. Thank goodness people listened to Hench's ideas, or else we wouldn't have the unmistakable Space Mountain building.
4. Tomorrowland received a big makeover in which the stone complexion that represented a serious look at the future turned into a colorful space port imagined by science fiction writers of the early 20th century. What year did the renovation for "New Tomorrowland" take place?

Answer: 1994

Inspired by the newly complete Discoveryland at Disneyland Paris, Tomorrowland was turned into a bustling look at the future imagined by many comic strips during the 1920's and 30's. One can imagine characters like Buck Rogers and Flash Gordon running to get in line at Space Mountain.
5. "Tomorrowland Transit Authority" was an attraction in Tomorrowland dubbed as the land's "highway in the sky". How were the vehicles for this attraction powered?

Answer: Linear Induction

The cars are pulled by electromagnets embedded in the track. The magnets attract and repel the vehicles in order to move them along the "TTA" track. This clean and quiet system was developed in the early 70's by Disney's electrical engineering group MAPO.
6. Which of the following rides was the first one to open at the Magic Kingdom's Tomorrowland?

Answer: Flight to the Moon

"Flight to the Moon" opened on December 24 in Walt Disney World's inauguration year, 1971. "If You Had Wings" opened in June 5, 1972, "Mission to Mars" opened on March 21, 1975 and "WEDway PeopleMover" opened on July 1, 1975. "Flight to the Moon", "If You Had Wings", and "Mission to Mars" all closed before the 1994 renovation. "WEDway PeopleMover" was renamed to "Tomorrowland Transit Authority" in 1994.
7. ExtraTERRORestrial Alien Encounter was an infamous attraction in Tomorrowland that was open from 1995 to 2003 in the Magic Kingdom. Who voiced the Simulated Intelligence Robotics (S.I.R.) in the pre-show area?

Answer: Tim Curry

The original voice of S.I.R. was the brilliant Phil Hartman. Tim Curry replaced him as the voice after his unfortunate death. ExtraTERRORestrial Alien Encounter was a dark attraction compared to the light-hearted rides in the rest of the park. It was an 18-minute long presentation where guests would find themselves trapped in a dark room with an escaped alien lurking around.

The attraction was closed in 2003 and now only survives in memories of frightened little children.
8. The Astro Orbiter was at the heart of Tomorrowland and it gave you one of the best bird's-eye views of the terrain. How many rotations per minute did the vehicles on the Astro Orbiter do?

Answer: 11 rotations per minute

Although the scenery around the ride made it appear to go faster, the Astro Orbiter only goes around its axis 11 times per minute. When the attraction first opened, it was called Star Jets. During the 1994 re-hab, it turned into the Astro Orbiter and the fan-favorite planets that surround the vehicles during the ride were added.
9. When looking beyond Tomorrowland in the Magic Kingdom park, you may spot this hotel in the distance, mixing in beautifully with the futuristic theme. What resort?

Answer: Contemporary

The famed Contemporary Resort was the first hotel to be constructed on Walt Disney World Resort property. Its iconic A-frame structure and fantastic restaurants made the Contemporary one of Disney's most popular. Watching the monorail glide through the hotel's core to pick up guests was a site that never failed to amaze.
10. After its big makeover, a new back-story was implemented for "New Tomorrowland". The futuristic terra firma would serve as the headquarters to which group?

Answer: League of Planets

The back-story for the intergalactic hub led the Imagineers through their design efforts. Tomorrowland would serve as the headquarters for the fictional League of Planets and it would also be as a bustling metropolis. The "locals" could travel on the Blue Line (Tomorrowland Transit Authority) if they needed to get somewhere and they could read about anything noteworthy by picking up a copy of the "Tomorrowland Times" from a robotic newsboy in Rocket Tower Plaza. The back-story inspired the Imagineers to pay more attention to detail and give Tomorrowland the futuristic look everyone dreamt of when they were a kid.

Tomorrowland is one of the Magic Kingdom's most popular lands and people still flock there first to start their day. It truly is an engineering phenomenon and no vacation at the magnificent Walt Disney World Resort is complete without it. So remember, space travelers, to always believe in the promise of tomorrow!
