Kyle O'Reilly and Bobby Fish were a tag team who came out during Takeover: Brooklyn III on August 19, 2017 to attack the team of "SAnitY", and then Adam Cole made his debut and they all aligned to form The Undisputed Era.

The faction started out as just Cole, O'Reilly, and Fish. In storyline, they had been looking to recruit Roderick Strong, but he initially balked at joining. In this time, he was in the first WarGames match, but aligning with Authors of Pain (AoP), and he entered the 2018 Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic along side Pete Dunne.

He and Dunne made it all the way to the finals at "NXT Takeover: New Orleans", where they faced off against O'Reilly and Cole, the latter whom was in quite a brutal Ladder Match earlier in the night to be crowned the inaugural NXT North American Champion. Strong and Dunne seemed to have it won when Dunne hit his pump-action gutbuster finishing move, "The Bitter End", on O'Reilly.

However, Strong ran in and broke up the pin, then hit his finishing move, "End of Heartache", on Dunne, and then pulled O'Reilly on top of Dunne to give The Undisputed Era the win.

Afterwards, he pulled Cole's armband off and put it on his own arm and joined the group.

While there have been a number of championship reigns among two members, often enough all of them have been recognized as tag team champion if the "freebird" sense.

Adam Cole, naturally. He was recognized as NXT Tag Team Champion along with the rest of the group in "Freebird" fashion, plus he was the inaugural NXT North American Champion, and he was the longest reigning NXT Champion in history.

At one point, Cole was the NXT Champion, O'Reilly and Fish were NXT Tag Team Champions, and Strong rounded it out with a reign as NXT North American Champion.

Bobby Fish is the only one not to be involved in any singles title pictures. Adam Cole has held both the NXT Championship and North American Championship, Roderick Strong held the North American Championship, and while he was unsuccessful while in the faction, Kyle O'Reilly had been in matches to try to win the NXT Championship.

On the March 17 episode of NXT, after Cole lost his match against Finn Balor for the NXT Championship, O'Reilly (who had distracted him during the match) attacked him and ripped the UE arm band off him, officially kicking him out of the group. The next week, Roderick Strong offered to help out O'Reilly, but O'Reilly turned it down, so Strong walked out on him with a parting shot, officially ending the faction.
