Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. For the first question, what are children of the Red King?

Answer: Descendants of an African King with several endowments.

This is the thing that is, generally speaking, what the whole set of books is about. For background information, the Red King was an man from Africa who came to Britain hundreds of years ago and had ten children. Shortly after the tenth child, a girl, was born, the Red King's queen, Berenice died.

The Red King was consumed by sorrow and went to live in the forest. When he returned he was horrified to discover that five of his children had turned evil and the other five had fled. He was then transformed by the magician Mathonwy, into a tree.
2. Which leopard/cat of the Red King was the "golden star"?

Answer: Sagittarius

Sagittarius was described by his master as the golden star, his brothers Aries and Leo were described as "bright flame" and "burning sun."
3. Fidelio's violin teacher is actually called Mrs Tilpin. What name does she go under?

Answer: Miss Chrystal

Miss Chrystal actually fell in love with Lyell Bone but he rejected her. Grandma Bone and the Yewbeam sisters said he broke the rules as he married another. It could be possible then that they arranged a marriage between "Miss Chrystal" and Lyell but he rejected her and married Amy Jones.

She and Matthew Tilpin had a son, Joshua, whose endowment is magnetism. Mrs Tilpin is descended from Lilith, the King's eldest daughter.
4. In the spell to free the King, what age should the endowed be under?

Answer: 20

The exact words of the spell are,
" Look to the forest, if ye see the Kinge, for he is hidden there,
His robes are now but autumn leaves, his teares like ripened fruit,
Blood red they fall and ne'er shall cease
Untille his children, ten of them, with less than twenty yeare,
Shalle meet in harmonie
And thrice they must walke, their fingers twined,
Around the Kinge, around, around, untille his teares are clear again,
Teares to wake the wandering souls,
To keep them safe and bring them home."

Orvil Onimous tried to step in as there were only nine endowed under twenty but the spell didn't work. Miraculously Asa Pike stepped in and the spell was completed.
5. In the Hundred Head's Dinner which headmaster smelt boy?

Answer: Professor Morvan

Professor Morvan was apparently concerned with smells. "Smells are my thing" he actually said. This is probably an endowment as it would have been too lucky of a guess otherwise.
6. Who in Charlie's family did Count Harken Badlock target?

Answer: his mother, Amy Bone

The count targeted his mother because she was one of the few people keeping Lyell Bone alive. The count enchanted her so she fell in love with him and forgot Charlie's father, but in the end she remembered after the count was banished.
7. Which of the three Bloor's Academy specialised subjects was Charlie's father forced to work in?

Answer: Music

Charlie's father was given the alias "Mr Pilgrim" as a piano teacher. He taught Gabriel Silk, one of Charlie's friends. These lessons were one-to-one and not class lessons although they still come under the category of music. The endowed is not an official category, if you are endowed you have to qualify for the another subject to gain a place in Bloor's Academy.
8. How does Charlie awaken his father?

Answer: He gets his father to accept the King's transparent tears which Lyell accidentally swallows.

After reawakening the King, his transparent tears are collected in a glass bottle and attempted to be given to Lyell but Manfred Bloor knocks them out of Charlie's hands. Lyell picks up the broken bottle and cuts his hand, when he puts it in his mouth he swallows the tears and remembers.
9. We discover the reason, in this book, why Charlie cannot reach fully the Red King's portrait. What is this reason?

Answer: A shadow in the portrait, Harken Badlock, prevents it.

This shadow is freed from the portrait by the mirror of Amoret. Originally Manfred claimed that his ancestor, Borlath, prevented it, probably to intimidate Charlie. It is doubtful that the aunts would have enough power to restrain the Red King. The portrait was also painted after the magician, Mathonwy, was alive.
10. A special mirror awakens Count Harken Badlock from his position in the Red King's portrait. This mirror was made for Charlie's ancestor, a child of the Red King; what was her/his name?

Answer: Amoret

Amoret's mirror is at the centre of the plot. On the British cover, Charlie is seen holding it, in, one would assume, surprise. Gabriel and Olivia are both descended from Guandhamara. Emma Tolly is directly descended from Toledo and Billy Ravan from Amadis.
