Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Before she leaves for her educational tour, Miss Annersley has a meeting with the Maynard triplets. Len is already Head Girl, and Margot takes over as Games Prefect, but what is Con's job?

Answer: Editor of 'The Chaletian'

Con is following in her mother Joey's footsteps by becoming the editor of the 'Chaletian', the school magazine. Heather Clayton, the previous Games Prefect, is going to St Mildred's for a year, so Margot takes her place. Likewise, Eloise Dafflon, the previous 'Chaletian' editor, left the term before and Con is to take over her job.

The staff hope that it will give her a chance to show that she has become more responsible; however, Miss Annersley warns her not to let her own writing get in the way.
2. Why has Evelyn Ross started at the Chalet School?

Answer: Her mother is a patient at the Sanatorium.

Evelyn's mum has tuberculosis and has been referred to the Sanatorium, and she and Evelyn are living in a pension. Evelyn is unhappy about going to the Chalet School as she would have rather gone to a commercial college, and she was very popular at her old school, Morven House and doesn't like the idea of being a 'nobody'. While she goes for a walk, she sees Joey driving to the Sanatorium and is immediately fascinated by her. She later meets Dr and Biddy Courvoisier, Hilary Graves and their families.

Jocelyn Marvell, meanwhile, has been sent to the school because her aunt, who has been looking after her in her parents' absence, can't cope with her terrible behaviour.
3. Lesley Anderson, a Scottish girl, is sent to look after Evelyn and Evelyn is placed in Va. During prep, she gets into an argument with Moira Carroll over a book and threatens to tell Miss Derwent that Moira is stopping her doing her work. What happens next?

Answer: The rest of the form send Evelyn to Coventry.

Evelyn has already had a bad start due to an altercation with Margot in a games class, and being told off by Eve Hurrell, the Library Prefect, for grabbing a book out of another girl's hands. Both she and Moira miss Miss Derwent's dictation, Evelyn because she is having remedial exercises and Moira because Matron wants her to tidy her drawers. Miss Derwent leaves the book for the girls to copy down the paragraph, Moira gets her hands on it first, and Evelyn makes a nasty remark about Moira's untidiness.

She then threatens to tell Miss Derwent that she can't do the work and an argument breaks out in the form, which is broken up by Margot. Margot dictates the paragraph to Moira and Evelyn, but the rest of the form are so disgusted with Evelyn they ignore her. Matron notices that Evelyn isn't eating properly and looks unwell, and informs Miss Wilmot, who talks to Lesley and tells her to let the matter drop.
4. Phil Maynard, Joey's youngest daughter, is a patient at the Sanatorium. What illness does she have?

Answer: Polio

Evelyn goes to visit her mother with Joey, Cecil and Felicity Maynard, who are visiting Phil, and Evelyn finds out that Phil has been ill with polio over the summer and has lost lots of weight. However, the doctors are hopeful that she will recover, and she is having electrical treatment. Evelyn goes to sit with her mum and tells her about happenings at school, but gets a nasty fright when her mum has a severe coughing fit.

The nurses come to look after Mrs Ross and get her to rest up while Matron Graves looks after Evelyn.
5. What happens to Miss Ferrars during a geography class with Upper IVa?

Answer: She has an attack of acute appendicitis and has to go to hospital.

Miss Ferrars is annoyed with Erica Standish for not having her atlas, but Erica is saved from an order mark when Evelyn shows up, saying she found Erica's atlas in her locker. Other girls add that their belongings have been going missing and turning up in all sorts of places. Miss Ferrars orders them all to empty their lockers and see if anything is missing, but collapses in pain. Miss Wilmot hears the noise and is upset to see that Miss Ferrars is ill, as the two are very close friends. Miss Ferrars is rushed to hospital and is revealed to have appendicitis.
6. Lower IV are fed up with being patronised by Upper IVa and a group of girls, led by Jocelyn Marvell, decide to get their own back by taking Upper IV's books and stationery and hiding them in other girls' lockers, and getting them into trouble for carelessness as a result. The game is up when Miss Wilmot catches a group of them at it during a prep session. How many girls were involved in the prank?

Answer: Eight

Jocelyn is the ringleader and the other girls involved are Carlotta von Eschenau, sister of Wanda and niece of Old Girl Marie, Angelique Ste Barbe, Sandra Johnson, Maureen O'Toole, Ottillie Sneider, Barbara Craven and another unnamed girl (as the book refers to eight girls being caught, not just the seven named ones). Jocelyn has already gained a bad reputation by pulling faces in class and distracting the other girls, smearing Vaseline on the blackboards and mixing chalk into the inkwells, in the hope of getting herself expelled. During prep with Len, she wiggles her ears and makes the other girls laugh, until Len threatens to make them learn their poetry the old-fashioned way. Len is called out by Matron to tidy her drawers, and Jocelyn and her friends raid the lockers. Four of them go into Va's room and the rest, including Jocelyn, go into Vb's formroom and are caught red-handed by Miss Wilmot. Jocelyn owns up to being the ringleader, and Miss Wilmot puts the entire class into isolation and later calls the eight perpetrators into her office.

When she finds out that they were doing it out of revenge, she tells them to repent to G-d for their vengeful behaviour during Prayers.
7. Margot takes Evelyn's form for a hockey lesson and is in a foul mood, constantly shouting at the girls and criticising their play. What happens to Lesley during the class?

Answer: Her wrist is injured when Evelyn hits the ball too hard.

Margot doesn't want to take hockey practice as she is hoping to make up some work, but Miss Burnett is unavailable as she is taking an extra gym class with IIIa. Margot plays Evelyn out of position and continually snaps at the girls and criticises their play, which gets Evelyn's back up as she hates games.

She accidentally hooks her stick, but Margot believes she did it on purpose and refuses to listen to other girls' explanations. Evelyn tries to be cautious and dribble the ball, but Margot shouts at her to hit it and when Evelyn does hit it, it bounces off a tuft of grass and hits Lesley's wrist, hurting her so badly she has to stop playing. Joan Dancey takes over practice, and Margot goes to Miss Burnett to apologise.

The younger girls are very cautious around her afterwards.
8. Eustacia Benson comes back to help cover some of Miss Ferrars' classes in her absence, and Lower IV decide to play a prank on her to liven things up. What do they do?

Answer: They put cobbler's wax on a drawer.

Eustacia, now Dr Benson, has been on a lecture tour but has been ordered by Dr Maynard to take it easy for a few months, and is living with the Maynards temporarily. When Miss Annersley comes back temporarily, she suggests Dr Benson as temporary cover as 'she knows what she owes the school', and she is highly intelligent and trilingual, which solves the language barrier issue.

The girls in Lower IV expect Dr Benson to be a soft touch, but she very much isn't, as they find out the hard way when Jocelyn seals her desk drawer shut with cobbler's wax.

She announces that they will forfeit their marks as she cannot get her mark book, and they have to deal with other angry mistresses who are unable to get at the drawer, which makes Jocelyn unpopular with the form.

It gets even worse for them when Dr Benson makes it clear she thinks they're a bunch of silly little girls.
9. What game is Jocelyn playing when she injures herself by banging her head on a table leg?

Answer: Going round the room without touching the floor

Jocelyn is playing what some people call the 'lava game', where you have to do a circuit of a room without touching the floor. Mary-Lou Trelawney has come to say hello to the teachers and her old friends, and comforts Evelyn, who is upset about her mum.

While Mary-Lou is chatting to the staff, two of Jocelyn's classmates come to the staff room to tell Miss Wilmot that Jocelyn has banged her head on a table leg. Miss Wilmot is not pleased as the game is banned, and tells the girls they should have stopped her and will have to be under constant supervision. Jocelyn has a headache for a few days, and then finds out she has a speaking part in the Christmas play.

Unfortunately, she gets in trouble with her House Matron and is in a bad mood, does a bad job of speaking her lines and accidentally pulls Léoline Marmont's chair out from under her. Ted Grantley thinks she did it on purpose and kicks her out of rehearsals.
10. Jocelyn runs away in a temper and is found by Mary-Lou, who feeds her, keeps her warm and takes her back to the Chalet School, getting a lift from Jack Maynard on the way. Jocelyn is in a lot of trouble, but does she lose her part in the play?

Answer: No

Jocelyn bumps into Eustacia on her way out of rehearsals and pushes past her, triggering an old injury. Before bedtime, Ottillie tells Jocelyn she couldn't have meant it about not wanting to be in the play, but Jocelyn snaps at her, and the other girls decide to leave her alone. Jocelyn plans to run away from school, but her plan backfires when a storm comes on and it snows heavily. Luckily, Eustacia - having done the same thing herself back in her Chalet School days - figures out what Jocelyn has done and tells Mary-Lou, who goes to look for her with the help of Joey's dog Bruno.

She manages to get Jocelyn into an empty chalet and makes her eat some soup, and then Dr Maynard spots them and picks them up. Jocelyn is an emotional wreck for the next few days, and Miss Wilmot suggests to Ted that, as Jocelyn pulled Léoline's chair out by accident, Jocelyn should get her part back. Ted apologises, Jocelyn and Evelyn both appear in the play, and the play is a success.
