Polly and her younger sister Lala have a game where Polly plays the Lady Acetylene Lampe and Lala is her attendant. They are playing the game when Mollie and Peggy Bettany come over to visit the Wintertons, as the Bettanys' housemaid's cousin is looking for work and lives near the Wintertons. Polly warns Lala not to tell Peggy about the game because she worries Peggy will think they are immature, even though Peggy actually plays similar games with her own family.

Mr Winterton is a journalist and foreign correspondent who spends ten years in the Far East. The family move from London to Yorkshire and Mrs Winterton refuses to send Polly and Lala to boarding school, as she had a bad experience there as a child. When Mr Winterton comes home, he is displeased at Polly and Lala's behaviour and moves the family to Devonshire, as they had little to no education in Yorkshire. Mrs Winterton has to report on everything the girls do whenever Mr Winterton is away.

When Polly meets Peggy, Peggy tells her and Lala about the Chalet School. Mrs Winterton decides to send the girls there, and Peggy looks after them on the train, along with her younger sisters Maeve and Bride.

A porter helps Maeve and the others into the train, which is crowded, and a girl - who turns out to be Nell Randolph - overhears them talking and tells them that they are on the wrong train, and that the train to Cardiff was at the other end of the platform. Nell is meeting her uncle, Flight-Commander Mordaunt, at Gloucester and picking up her cousin Althea, and she says he will be able to help.

Nell explains everything to her uncle and he takes the girls back to his home, as it is too late for them to go to the island. He and Peggy explain the situation to Miss Dene and Miss Annersley - who turns out to be his long-lost cousin - and he takes the group to Swansea the following day.

The Sixth Form girls are called into a meeting with Miss Annersley and Miss Wilson, and discover that a visiting mistress will be taking the Fourths and Fifths for history, as Miss Burnett has left. Miss Wilson announces that Joey will be taking the Sixth Form for history, and that she is moving house as Plas Gwyn's foundations are dodgy and part of it needs rebuilding. Commander Christy, Dickie's father, helps the Maynards find a new house, Cartref. Miss Wilson also announces that Peggy is to be Head Girl, much to Peggy's shock.

Special Sixth is a form for girls who are specialising in certain subjects. Marilyn Evans, the Head Girl in question, was very academic and put her work over her duties, and because of that, the Heads decided that Head Girls would not come from Special Sixth.

This later causes problems for Peggy as Eilunedd Vaughan, one of the Special Sixth girls, wants to be Head Girl and is jealous that Peggy got the job instead, blaming it on favouritism. Dickie Christy, Joan Sandys and Daphne Russell all notice that Eilunedd is making digs at Peggy, but Peggy brushes it off.

Nella Ozanne accosts Polly at Hobbies Club and asks her if she has any ideas for a competition involving Tom's new dolls' house. The girls explain about Tom's dolls' houses and how they used to guess the name, but they need a new idea. Polly has a talent for painting and Primrose Day suggests she paint little pictures for the dolls' house. Polly is in a bad mood, but the possibility of getting to paint the pictures distracts her and she paints a tiny landscape. Daphne Russell and Peggy come to check on the Hobbies Club and are impressed by Polly's work.

Blossom Willoughby overhears one of the prefects making a remark about talking like a Jane Austen heroine and decides to run with it, suggesting that the Fourth Forms speak Regency English. They read all the Regency books they can - Eilunedd recommends Georgette Heyer - and the prefects are confused to hear them use expressions like 'you foolish rattle' and 'bamming'.

However, Peggy and the prefects get their revenge when the weather is bad and they take the Fourths for a walk. Peggy tells them that they will be living like Regency girls, which means having to learn their catechism, only have bread and milk for tea, and memorise the sermon at church. Their entertainment involves being read an extremely boring book by the prefects while sewing. As a result, the younger girls try harder not to use slang.

The Russell family, minus Sybil and David, are currently in Canada as Jem is doing research there, and they have taken Margot Maynard with them. Madge writes to update Joey and tells her that Margot is much healthier, and they will be coming back later than planned. Jem later writes to tell Joey and Jack that Madge has given birth to twin boys, and they are to be named Kevin and Kester. Eilunedd decides to start a whispering campaign against Peggy and seeds the idea in Blossom Willoughby's head that Peggy got on the wrong train on purpose and got away with it because she is Lady Russell's niece. Blossom is rude to a puzzled Peggy and other juniors start acting out as well, as the rumour spreads. Some girls, such as Mary-Lou Trelawney and the Maynards, defend Peggy. Joan and Dickie tell Joey they suspect Eilunedd is behind it. Joey promises to deal with her.

Dickie worries that the girls need proof that Peggy got on the wrong train by accident. Luckily, Nell Randolph comes to the school with her uncle, and Dickie calls a meeting of the school, where Nell explains what happened. Meanwhile, Joey invites Eilunedd over and Eilunedd helps her pluck chickens, but the wind blows the feathers everywhere and Eilunedd tries to pick them up, with little success. Joey compares words to feathers and how, once said, they cannot be unsaid. Eilunedd takes the hint and apologises to Peggy.

The Sixth Formers are acting out scenes from 'Little Women' as entertainment, and Peggy is Amy March. She complains about having to have loads of hairpins in her hair! Eilunedd is Hannah, Barbara Henschell is Aunt March, Joan is Laurie and Nita Eltringham is Jo. Anthea Barnett steals the show as Miss Crocker. Meanwhile, Polly gets a part in the school carol concert as the innkeeper while acting out a carol. Mrs Winterton is staying with Joey and comes to visit the Hobbies show, and is amazed at the change in her daughters, who have both settled in happily.
