Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Why do the pupils and staff of St Hilda's School have to move in with the Chalet School?

Answer: St Hilda's is destroyed in a fire.

St Hilda's, unlike the Chalet School, only has British pupils and staff and was started by its headmistress, Miss Holroyd, for girls whose parents wanted them to learn languages, but who couldn't afford Swiss finishing school fees. It is much smaller than the Chalet School.

A loose cigarette starts a fire and as the area is dry and the school buildings are made of wood, they are quickly set alight. Both Miss Holroyd and Miss Ashley, a former pupil turned teacher, are injured in the fire; Miss Holroyd in particular needs intensive care as her injuries are very severe.

The Sanatorium staff take her to the Sanatorium, while the Chalet School's Nurse looks after Miss Ashley. The girls and staff from St Hilda's temporarily move in with the Chalet School until a new building can be found.
2. Which event kicks off an argument between the Middles from both schools?

Answer: Minette, the school cat, wanders into a games class and Jack Lambert is told to take her away.

Minette is Miss Holroyd's cat, and also the school cat at St Hilda's, and one of the reasons why Miss Holroyd is so badly injured is because she ran back into the building to save Minette. Minette walks onto the pitch during a games class and Monica Caird, the prefect in charge, orders Jack to take the cat to the kitchen.

She bumps into a group of St Hilda's girls, who accuse her of stealing the cat and when one of them, Mary Candlish, tries to grab her, Minette scratches her and runs off. The girls try to coax her to come out from under a bush, but they are spotted by a very annoyed Miss Ferrars, who orders them to go to class as they are late. Both sets of girls go on a walk and the St Hilda's group, led by Gillie Garstin, make a point of snubbing the Chalet School girls.
3. While on a walk, Jack Lambert spots Minette in the woods and takes her back to the school. However, the cat turns out to be a stranger and the real Minette is back at the school. What happens next?

Answer: The two cats get into a fight and the girls get badly scratched.

Miss Denny notices the tension between the Middles and insists on the girls mixing with each other rather than sticking to their own schools, although it doesn't last when the girls break ranks. Jack and Meg Walton spot a cat and jump over a stream to get her, mistaking her for Minette.

When they and Len Maynard bring the cat back to the school, the original Minette is already there and is not happy with being confronted with a strange cat. The two cats savage each other and the girls get scratched trying to split them up, but with the help of Miss Denny and Karen, the school cook, Len manages to separate them. Joey Maynard arrives with news of Miss Holroyd, and suggests the cats be kept in cages separately until someone claims the second cat, although it never happens and the school end up adopting her as well.
4. Which former Chalet School teacher is seriously ill and later dies during the book?

Answer: Herr Laubach

Herr Laubach is the notoriously temperamental former art teacher at the Chalet School, who retired in 'Trials for the Chalet School'. Miss Burnett and Miss Ashley go to visit Naomi Elton and Miss Holroyd respectively. On the way, they meet Jack Maynard, who has just arrived from Herr Laubach's house, which is part of the original Chalet School kindergarten building. Jack tells them that Herr Laubach is dying and asks both of them to keep it a secret. Miss Ashley updates Miss Holroyd about the school, despite being told not to talk shop, and suggests that St Hilda's take over the old kindergarten building, and Peggy is furious when she overhears Miss Ashley saying that St Hilda's should have Herr Laubach's house and that she thinks the Chalet School are being greedy hogging all that living space.

However, Miss Holroyd refuses to entertain the idea, saying the building is too small anyway.
5. Miss Ashley makes a comment which really upsets Miss Dene and Miss Burnett, but which other girl overhears and reports back to her peers, causing the feud between both schools to spread to the seniors?

Answer: Margot Maynard

On their way back, Miss Burnett and Miss Ashley run into Miss Dene, who is on her way to St Mildred's with a message for Miss Wilson. She informs them that Herr Laubach has died. Miss Burnett is upset, but Miss Ashley comments that there might be a chance for St Hilda's to have his house and be on their own again, now that he is dead. Both teachers are really angry, but unfortunately, Miss Annersley has asked Margot to catch up with Miss Dene and give her a document to take to Miss Wilson, and Margot overhears Miss Ashley's remark.

When she gets back to the school, she tells her Sixth Form classmates and they react with horror, while her sister Con cries over the art teacher's death. She turns herself in to Miss Annersley after realising she wasn't supposed to tell anyone about Herr Laubach's death until the official announcement. Meanwhile, the Chalet School girls slag Miss Ashley off, the St Hilda's Sixth Formers defend her and the atmosphere between both Sixth Forms becomes very awkward.
6. Where do Jack and Gillie's forms go on their half-term trip?

Answer: Neuchatel

After Herr Laubach's death, things calm down for a bit. Miss Holroyd allows the girls from St Hilda's to attend his requiem mass; Kitty Anderson, one of the more reasonable St Hilda's girls, says that although they didn't know him, they want to go as a show of sympathy.

Although half-term is short, the girls still have their excursions, and Jack and Gillie's forms go to Neuchâtel. They see an old church and the English Garden, eat fondue and take a trip on a steamer. Miss Ashley is secretly embarrassed about how little her girls know about Switzerland compared to the Chalet School group.
7. Gillie and Jack have a fight in Hobbies Club after Gillie interrupts Jack's work. What kind of toy is Jack working on in Hobbies Club?

Answer: An aeroplane

Jack is a keen mechanic and gadget enthusiast and although she hates sewing and other more girly crafts, she loves making jigsaws and other toys out of wood, and gets first pick of the school's fretsaw. The St Hilda's girls get involved in the Hobbies Club and Kitty Anderson and friends are making a scrap screen, but Gillie - who is just as tomboyish as Jack - gets bored and wants to do something else.

She goes over to watch Jack make a toy aeroplane and accidentally knocks over a box of pieces and breaks one. Jack is furious and hits her, and Carmela Walther has to come and break them up.

She sends Gillie off to the library as Gillie has no idea what she wants to do. Jack tries to apologise, but Gillie rejects it, both forms end up getting into a shouting match and Maeve Bettany, the Head Girl, fines all of them for speaking in the wrong language.

However, when it starts snowing, the girls forget their quarrel.
8. Joey Maynard decides to cheer the school up by supplying them with a large quantity of jam, made by her loyal housekeeper Anna. Of which fruit is the jam made?

Answer: Greengages

Joey no doubt knows how frustrating it is for teenage girls to be cooped up due to the bad weather, and sends Jack over with a script for a Christmas pageant, which Miss Annersley and the staff read to the girls. Joey also has Anna's greengage jam sent over and Jack leads a cheer for her.

The jam goes down a treat, although Len warns other girls that Anna won't be telling anyone the recipe, and Gillie is so impressed she asks for another cheer at the end of Abendessen, much to Miss Annersley's amazement.

The pageant also receives a welcome reception, and Miss Ferrars oversees production. Both schools are involved in the pageant, and Miss Ashley joins Miss Burnett in helping choreograph the dances.
9. After things calm down, the Middles from both schools decide to 'help' Gaudenz, the school handyman, by painting some walls with what they think is varnish. What do they actually use?

Answer: Golden syrup

As the walls are pine, Gaudenz is actually intending to oil the walls and not varnish them, but the girls don't know that! The Middles go for a walk in the corridor and have a look in the kitchen, and find a load of tins. Jack assumes the tins contain varnish as her dad decants varnish into old tins, and the girls take the tins and some brushes and paint the walls.

They dump the tins near the kitchen steps and Gaudenz trips over one, and dumps the tins on the kitchen table, assuming a maid has left them on the floor.

He then notices that someone has been painting the walls and is not happy as whatever they used is very sticky and lumpy. Karen is angry about the tins and Gaudenz accuses the maids of leaving the tins out, and tells Karen about the walls.

She touches the wood and licks her finger, and realises that whoever painted the walls used golden syrup. Gaudenz tells Miss Annersley and the group confess. As punishment, they have to spend their free time washing the doors, then oiling and polishing them properly.
10. Minette causes trouble again when she gets lost during a snowstorm, and Jack and Gillie attempt to rescue her. Where do they find her?

Answer: On the roof of the school

Jack and Gillie both have nightmares and wake up. They go out into the corridor to watch the snow and hear the sound of a cat crying. Jack figures out that Minette is on the roof. Instead of doing the sensible thing and telling Len, their dormitory prefect, Jack and Gillie take matters into their own hands and climb on the roof. Miss Ashley is woken by Minette's crying and sees the girls trying to capture her, but is too frightened to say anything and has to get Matron and Miss Wilmot to come and help. Jack manages to grab hold of Minette and as Gillie climbs back in, Miss Wilmot helps her and then gets Jack and Minette to safety. Minette faints and both Gillie and Jack start crying.

The teachers pack them off to the San and they both end up with bad colds, and worry that they'll be kicked out of the Christmas pageant. Miss Annersley is not happy and orders them to stay in the San for the rest of the term, but both girls keep their parts, and the hostilities between the two schools end for good.
