It meant freedom and bird, but spread beyond the Ralad people.

Right before Thaegan casts a spell that will reduce Leif, Barda, and Jasmine to a life worse then death, Kree pecks her in the one place she is not armored, her spell-casting finger. Since one drop of a witch's blood is fatal, it kills her.
