Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the three Baltic States has Riga as its capital city?

Answer: Latvia

Riga is indeed the capital of Latvia. Estonia's capital is Tallinn. Lithuania's capital is Vilnius.
2. Of the three countries which one is the smallest?

Answer: Estonia

All three nations rank as some of the smallest nations in the world, however, these are their respective land masses: Estonia 42,388 sq km; Latvia 64,589 sq km; Lithuania 62,680 sq km.
3. The population census of 2015 had which nation with the most people living within its borders?

Answer: Lithuania

The population of Lithuania at the 2015 European Union census was 2.9 million.
Latvia's population stood at just under 2 million in 2015, whilst Estonia had 1.3 million inhabitants. All in all, the three Baltic states comprised slightly under 6.5 million people.
4. The Euro is the main currency for the European continent, but is this currency used by any of the Baltic States?

Answer: Yes, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania all use the currency

All three nations joined the Euro at different times. Lithuania joined in January 2015 leaving behind the Litas. Estonia joined in 2011 leaving behind the Kroon whilst Latvia adopted the Euro alongside the Lat on January 1st 2014. The Lat was put aside two weeks later on January 14th 2014.
5. On the map of Europe going from the north down to the south, what is the order that each country can be found?

Answer: Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania

Estonia is found 59.0000 degrees North, 26.0000 degrees East.
Latvia is found 57.0000 degrees North, 25.0000 degrees East.
Lithuania is found 55.0000 degrees North, 24.0000 degrees East.
This makes Estonia the most northerly state followed by Latvia then Lithuania.
An easy way to remember which of the states is in which place is to remember them alphabetically.
6. The River Gauja is the only large river in one of the Baltic states with its entire 460km length within its borders. In which nation can it be found?

Answer: Latvia

As stated, the Gauja is the only river of note in Latvia. Rivers don't tend to be very long in any of the Baltic states, but there are plenty of bodies of water.
7. Suur Munamagi is the Baltic states' highest peak standing at a height of 318m (1043 feet). In which one of the three nations can it be found?

Answer: Estonia

The Baltic states are relatively flat and most of their peaks are more akin to being hills more so than mountains. Suur Munamagi translated means 'Big Egg Mountain' and can be found in the southeast of Estonia within the Haanja Upland.
8. All three Baltic states joined the European Union at some stage since 2001, but who was the last of the three to sign up on May 1st 2004?

Answer: Each nation joined on May 1st 2004

The big day was May 1st 2004 when all three nations, who were formerly Soviet states, joined the Union of Europe. This allowed freedom of trade and migration within the Union.
9. Basketball is regarded as this country's second religion after Catholicism, but which one of the three states can say truly it is their national sport?

Answer: Lithuania

The sheer fact that the Lithuanian nickname for the sport of basketball is "Basketball: The Second Religion, Game of the Nation" would suggest its love for the game. Three times Lithuania has won Olympic bronze medals, losing mainly to the USA in the earlier rounds.
10. Didzkukuliai is a traditional potato dumpling dish served in which of the three Baltic states?

Answer: Lithuania

Didzkukuliai (more commonly known as cepelinai) is often called the national dish of Lithuania. While it's considered an old, traditional recipe now, potatoes were only brought to Lithuania in the 17th century.
