Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Why are they called an "all of a kind" family"?

Answer: They are all girls.

At the end of the book, after the birth of baby Charlie, Ella mourns the fact they are no longer the "all of a kind family." Mama corrects her saying, "I think that means more than having five daughters. It means we're all close and loving and loyal-and our family will always be like that."
2. Why does Sarah think she'll never be allowed to go to the library again?

Answer: She lost her book.

Sarah loaned her book to her friend Tillie. It was always a mystery which girl really lost the book.
3. How did Mama make house cleaning fun?

Answer: She made it a game of sorts.

Mama's game consisted of hidden buttons that could only be found if a room was thoroughly and properly dusted. To keep the girls on their toes, she varied the number of buttons hidden. On certain special days, Mama hid pennies. In the days before World War I, a penny was a good sum of money!
4. What surprise did Papa have for the girls in his shop?

Answer: Papa had a large assortment of books.

A wealthy person had cleared out his library. They called a scrap paper peddler to take away the unwanted books. The books made a stop over at Papa's junk shop before they were sold. The girls were each allowed to choose one book to keep. These were the first books they had owned.
5. Why did Charlie not fit in among Papa's friends?

Answer: All of these

Charlie had had an argument with his family. He left the life he had known with them behind and took refuge among the immigrants of the East Side of New York City.
6. What was Uncle Hyman's favorite meal?

Answer: eggs and rye bread

"Uncle Hyman was Mama's youngest brother. Since he had no family of his own, he was a frequent guest at Mama's table. His meal was always the same: six hard boiled eggs and a loaf of sour rye bread spread thickly with butter."
7. What treat did Mr. Basch give Gertie and Charlotte?

Answer: lox

Communicating with Mr. Basch was interesting, for he spoke no English. He didn't really need to when he offered the girls pieces of salty smoked fish. They knew a treat when they saw one!
8. Where did Mama do her grocery shopping for Shabbat?

Answer: Rivington Street

The market at Rivington Street had much better prices than Mama's local market. She made the trip there once a week for her Sabbath purchases. Today Rivington Street is no longer a predominantly Jewish neighborhood, but rather a melting pot of diverse cultures.
9. Who did Mama meet on her way to do her Shabbat shopping?

Answer: The library lady

The girls had always wanted Mama to meet Miss Allen. Since they would be walking right by the library on their way to Rivington Street, this was the perfect opportunity.
10. What language did all the merchants speak?

Answer: Yiddish

These merchants were almost all Eastern European Jews. They spoke Yiddish, a combination of Hebrew and German. When Yiddish is written, it looks just like Hebrew.
11. What kind of fish did Charlotte NOT want?

Answer: live fish

Charlotte preferred not to see the live fish swim around in the bath tub, and then meet him again on the dinner table.
12. What did the girls buy Papa for his birthday?

The pocket knife was rejected because Papa already had one. The wallet and the shirt were rejected because they were too expensive. Mr. Pinchus gave them a two cent discount on the cup so that they could give Papa "a fine present."
13. Who was the villain in the Purim story?

Answer: Haman

Haman hated the Jews and plotted to kill them all by hanging. The joke was on him when he was hung from his own gallows.

Answer: It was Sunday. The library was closed.

The girls planned to take Miss Allen her basket on Monday.
15. How did Sarah get in trouble the second time?
