Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This is the most common form of magical transportation for children under the age of 17, and it involves an object which is also part of a popular game called Quidditch.

Answer: Broomstick

Broomsticks are very prevalent throughout the entire Harry Potter series. Broomsticks are the magical equivalent of a Muggle car, and some of the more popular models of broomsticks include the Comet, Cleansweep, Nimbus, and Firebolt.
2. This type of transportation is a popular form of group transportation, and it involves ordinary items such as a boot, an old kettle, or an empty drinks can.

Answer: Portkey

Portkeys first make an appearance in the fourth book. In addition, Dumbledore uses them in the fifth book to transport Harry and the Weasley children to Grimmauld Place and then again to transport Harry back to Hogwarts from the Ministry of Magic.
3. This form of transportation requires at least two fireplaces and very clear speech.

Answer: Floo powder

Floo powder first appears in the second book of the series. Harry and the Weasley family use it to travel to Diagon Alley, but Harry doesn't pronounce "Diagon Alley" properly, and he ends up in Knockturn Alley. In addition, Floo powder can be used for communication.
4. Stranded witches or wizards use this uncomfortable form of public transportation that charges a fee for its services throughout England, Scotland, and Wales.

Answer: Knight Bus

The Knight Bus is first used in book three when Harry runs away from the Dursley's house. The Knight Bus is said to be able to travel anywhere except for on water.
5. This form of transportation takes a person back to earlier in the day. Its most notable use was by Hermione Granger.

Answer: Time-Turner

The Time-Turner plays a crucial role in the plot of book three, when Hermione and Harry use it to rescue Sirius and Buckbeak. In book five we learn that a large number of Time-Turners are kept at the Ministry, but Harry and the Death Eaters destroy all of them during their fight.
6. Witches or wizards need a license in order to use this form of transportation, which is often accompanied by a loud cracking sound and an uncomfortable squeezing sensation.

Answer: Apparition

Apparition is disappearing from one place and reappearing in a different place. A witch or wizard is allowed to apply for an Apparition license when they turn seventeen, however, Apparition lessons are allowed to take place with a Ministry official before the child comes of age.
7. This form of transportation takes students to and from Hogwarts and begins at a platform in London that is invisible to Muggle eyes.

Answer: Hogwarts Express

The Hogwarts Express begins each journey from Platform 9¾ at the King's Cross station. This train has been the site of many big events in Harry's life such as meeting Ron and Hermione and first seeing a dementor.
8. This form of transportation comes in a pair and transfers objects or people from one of its pair to the other. Its most notable use was by Draco Malfoy.

Answer: Vanishing Cabinet

The Vanishing Cabinet is first mentioned in the second book. There are two known cabinets, one in Hogwarts and one in the Borgin and Burkes shop. The use of the Vanishing Cabinet proves critical to the story's plot, as Draco Malfoy uses the pair to let Death Eaters into Hogwarts.
9. These flying animals are not usually seen as a common form of transportation but can still be very useful to those who can see their benefits. They have an excellent sense of direction and can also be used to pull loads such as carriages.

Answer: Thestrals

Thestrals can only be seen by people who have witnessed death and come to terms with it. I tried to put in a few clues that had to do with only certain people being able to see them. In addition, Thestrals are described as having a skeletal body with blank, shining eyes. Harry most notably uses them in the fifth book on his trip to rescue Sirius.
10. This form of Apparition can be used to take an underage or injured witch or wizard with the person who is Apparating.

Answer: Side-Along Apparition

Side-Along Apparition is first mentioned in the sixth book when Dumbledore takes Harry to Budleigh Babberton to talk to Horace Slughorn. Conversely, Harry later uses Side-Along Apparition to transport Dumbledore when Dumbledore is too weak to move himself. I hope you enjoyed the journey through Harry's magical world of transportation!
