Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. MONO- is a word element meaning 'alone', 'single', or 'one'. What word - starting with mono - means an eyeglass for one eye?

Answer: monocle

Sometimes, you will see a person using a MONOCLE at an opera, where they are used to see fine detail of the performers on the stage (they look much nicer than binoculars). MONOGAMY is the practice of marriage between one woman and one man. A MONOLITH is a single block or piece of stone: in Australia, Uluru (which used to be called Ayers Rock) is one really, really, REALLY HUGE STONE - I would not like to try to pick it up - I would have to be ATLAS - but that is another story. A MONOLOGUE - is a talk - or sometimes dramatic entertainment- by only one speaker.

The MONOGAMOUS Professor dropped his MONOCLE, while he was delivering a MONOLOGUE on MONOLITHS.
2. BI- is a word element meaning two. Can you tell me what a two-footed animal is called?

Answer: biped

A human being is a BIPED. We walk on our feet and use our hands for other tasks. As for BIPAROUS, in the branch of study called Zoology, it means bringing forth offspring (young) in pairs. In the study of plants (Botany), BIPAROUS means having two branches.

A BIPLANE is an aeroplane that has at least one engine - with two pairs of wings one above and ususally slightly forward of the other. Sometimes it does not have an engine but glides with the wind. Personally I would like the one with the engine.

A BIQUADRATIC - in Mathematics involving the fourth but no higher power of the unknown or variable. So BIPAROUS BIPEDS, can fly in a BIPLANE while studying BIQUADRATICS.
3. TRI- is a word element meaning three, as if you didn't guess. Can you tell me what a type of pumpkin with three deep lobes is called?

Answer: triamble

It is easy to see the lobes on a pumpkin. Next time you see one with three big deep lobes then you will know it is called a TRIAMBLE. A TRIANGLE is a geometrical plane figure formed by three, usually straight lines which meet two by two in three points, thus forming three angles.

A TRIATHLON is an athletic event comprising three events usually swimming, running and cycling, one immediately after the other. A TRIPLET is one of three babies born at the same time. So after the TRIPLETS complete a TRIATHLON in a really large TRIANGLE, they can all sit down and eat a whole TRIAMBLE, which has been made into a soup. YUMMY!
4. QUAD is a word, as well as a word element - can you tell me what a square dance for four couples is called?

Answer: quadrille

Square dances seem old hat but like boot-scooting, they are coming back, because they just can not seem to stop people dancing. People will dance even if they have to learn to do it on their HEAD. A QUADRILLE is a square dance for four couples consisting of five parts, or movements, each complete in itself. A QUADRILLION (originally U.S.) and increasingly in general use in British English is a million times a billion or TEN to the power of FIFTEEN.
A QUADRIVIAL is having four ways or roads meeting in a point(of ways or roads leading in four directions. QUADRAPHONIC relates to having four channel sound reproduction.
So now we have a QUADRILLION people travelling along the QUADRIVIAL to join in the QUADRILLE which now has QUADRAPHONIC sound. YAY!
5. Can you tell me what one of five children born at one birth is called?

Answer: quin

So I believe that having QUINS would mean an instant family. When quins (also known as quintuplets) are born they are born within minutes of each other so after the birth there would be a QUINARY lineup in chronological order (that is in the order of the TIME of birth). So on the QUINDECENNIAL birthday, that is the QUINS' fifteenth birthday (QUINDECENNIAL means of or relating to a period of fifteen years or the fifteenth occurrence of a series as in anniversary) they could line up together in the order they were born. QUINTET - relates to a group of five; for example a musical composition for five players or singers.

When the QUINS are celebrating their QUINDECINNIAL birthday they will do a QUINARY lineup while performing a QUINTET.
6. The word SEXTET comes to us as meaning any group or set of six. Can you tell me the name for the position of two heavenly bodies, that is planets or stars, when they are at sixty degrees distant from each other?

Answer: sextile

We need measurements for the planets and stars as we need to have an international understanding to be able to tell people who do not speak our language where the stars and planets are on a 'sky map' So if two planets are in a SEXTILE position they are sixty degrees from each other. SEXTET is any group or set of six.

The word SESTET which can be spelled as SESTETTE is a company of six singers or players or a musical composition for six voices or instruments. SEXTILLION is a really huge number, it is the number one followed by twenty one zeros. Yes I would love that many lollies - YUM! The SESTET of girls lined up beside the SESTETTE of male singers at night and looked up at the planets in the SEXTILE position and sang a beautiful song to SEXTILLION stars.
7. SEPT- comes to us from Latin - it is a prefix meaning 'seven'. Can you tell me what is the seventh of eight defensive positions in the sport of fencing is called?

Answer: septime

In some sports there are patterns of defense such as in fencing, taekwondo, and even chess. All our opponents in these sports have to work out which defense we are using or which one we will use when they attack us. SEPTIME is the seventh position out of eight we can use while fencing, but we will not tell our opponent.

A SEPTUPLET is one of seven offspring born at one birth or any group or combination of seven related items or in music a group of seven notes to be played in the time of four or six.

A SEPTET is any group of seven persons or things - not related to each other - or a company of seven singers or players or a musical composition for seven voices or instruments. A SEPTENNIAL is a period of seven years as in an anniversary. The SEPTUPLETS got together every SEPTENNIAL in a SEPTET to practice all their fencing moves, including the SEPTIME.
8. OCTA- is a word element meaning eight and it comes to us from the Greek language. Can you tell me what a polygon having eight angles and eight sides is called?

Answer: octagon

An OCTOGON has eight angles and eight sides. An OCTAMEROUS is something that consists of eight parts, like a pizza sliced for eight.
An OCTANT is the eighth part of a circle. An OCTAVE is a note on the eighth degree from a given note (given as the first).
9. What is the word for nine babies born at the one time?

Answer: nonuplets

A lady named Geraldine Broderick from Sydney had nonuplets, which is nine babies at the one time. That is NINEFOLD a normal delivery (nine times as many as one baby). When my grandad turned NINETY all of his children and grandchildren and two great-grandchildren held a birthday party for him at Fitzroy Gardens in Victoria. NINTH is of course the next number after the eighth, that is eight plus one.
The NONUPLETS turned NINETY on the NINTH day of the NINTH month, this meant that there were NINEFOLD birthday cakes needing to be bought.
10. What system relates to tenths or to the number ten?

Answer: decimal

On Feburary 14th 1966 Australia changed from the Imperial measurement and pound sterling currency to the decimal system. The Imperial system meant our weights, measures and currency were determined by the Imperial and pounds sterling system. This system was very awkward, as in measurement, for example sixteen ounces made the weight of one pound, whereas with the decimal system everything is measured in tens or units of tens; for example, five hundred grams equal half a kilogram and one thousand grams equal one kilogram - the whole system of weight measurement and currency is much easier.

In statistics DECILE is one of the values of a variable which divides its distribution into ten groups. DECI- is from Latin, and it means a tenth of a given unit.
