Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first windy word rhymes with whale, snail and rail. It means a very strong wind, or an outburst of laughter. I hope you don't fail at this one!

Answer: Gale

A whale and a snail are both animals, however one is a whole lot bigger than the other! A rail is used to describe a barrier, or a pole to hang things from, as well as something a train moves along. I really hope you didn't fail at this question; that would mean you got it wrong.
2. The second windy word rhymes with raft, craft and laughed. It also refers to a first pass version of writing. The English spelling is "draught", but what is the accepted American spelling?

Answer: Draft

A raft is basically a floating platform and you'd usually hear of it in adventure stories when someone floats down a river on a raft they've made from logs held together with vines. Craft can be either an art activity or having the skill to deceive others. A draught can mean many things, and I hope there's no reason for you to have laughed at this question.
3. The third windy word rhymes with butter, mutter and putter. It also means to move uncertainly, or the motion of wings (of a bird or insect). If you get this wrong, I bet you'll sputter!

Answer: Flutter

Butter tastes great on toast, and to mutter is to say something under your breath. A putter is a golf club or a golfer who is really good at putting. To sputter is to make a series of soft explosive or spitting sounds.
4. The fourth windy word rhymes with stiff, cliff and biff. It can also mean to catch a brief smell of something, or a puff of air or smoke. I hope you can figure out the right glyph(s) to use to spell this word!

Answer: Whiff

Something that is stiff is hard to bend or could be someone considered inflexible. A cliff is a steep rock face and biff is considered a short, sharp blow (usually with the fist). A glyph is a character or symbol used to convey meaning, and yes, I know I'm stretching the boundaries of the meaning of the word when I used as a hint in the question!
5. The fifth windy word rhymes with snuff, cuff and fluff. It can also mean a short burst of air or a small amount of smoke, air or vapour escaping suddenly. If you get it wrong, you'll be in a huff!

Answer: Puff

To snuff something out is to extinguish it, like putting out a candle or flame. The cuff is the end part of your sleeve or pants, or it could be something that goes around your arm, such as handcuffs or the device used to measure blood pressure. Fluff is something light, soft and airy, or it can also be a small mistake, whereas a huff would be blowing air out loudly in annoyance or after exerting yourself physically.
6. The sixth windy word rhymes with Macbeth, heth and Seth. You take this into your lungs, then expel it. If you get it wrong, it won't be the death of you!

Answer: Breath

"Macbeth" is the common name for the composition written by William Shakespeare, "The Tragedy of Macbeth". Heth is the eighth letter of the Hebrew alphabet and Seth was the third child of Adam and Eve. Death is the state of being dead.
7. The seventh windy word rhymes with squeeze, sneeze and these. This windy word is more gentle than the rest, and is an easy thing to accomplish. Can you hear this one through the trees?

Answer: Breeze

To squeeze is to press something firmly or manage to get something into or through a narrow space. A sneeze is what can happen if you get a tickle in your nose and "these" indicates something close to hand. Trees rhyme with breeze and a breeze is usually heard through the trees.
8. The eighth windy word rhymes with fast, mast and past. This windy word is usually associated with an explosion or it can mean a single loud note of a horn. The range of options may be vast, however there's only one correct answer!

Answer: Blast

To do something fast is to be quick and put it in your past - which can mean coming before or overtaking something. A mast is part of ship that supports a sail or a pole that holds a flag. Vast means a lot - as in space, or time.
9. The ninth windy word rhymes with dragoon, cocoon, and balloon. It can also refer to a tropical storm in the western Pacific or Indian Ocean region. Getting it wrong might make you feel like a baboon!

Answer: Typhoon

A dragoon is different to a dragon so no spelling mistake here! A dragoon is similar to a knight or cavalier. A cocoon is a casing for a grub that will eventually turn into a butterfly or moth and a balloon is an inflatable piece of rubber that can be filled with either air or water to create hours of fun! A typhoon is the term used for a tropical storm in the Indian and western Pacific oceans.

A typhoon is similar to a cyclone or hurricane, and a baboon is a type of monkey.
10. This windy word rhymes with glow, flow and sew. You'd do this with a woodwind instrument, or maybe do it to your nose when it's all congested. I hope the words you've learned today have helped your vocabulary grow!

Answer: Blow

To glow is to give out a steady light or shine and flow refers to liquids moving in a steady stream. Sew is to join or fasten something using needle and thread, and to grow is to get bigger or develop.
