Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. An old way of saying 'here' is to say HITHER, and that's where we'll start on our path. Change one letter to come up with a word that describes someone who can bat both left and right... a switch _______.

Answer: Hitter

A HITTER is not only someone who can swing a bat on a baseball team, but really anyone who hits something. A boxer is also called a HITTER if he uses his strength more than his skill.
2. Now change a letter to make a word that means a sharp, unpleasant taste.

Answer: Bitter

BITTER is not only a taste, but can also be the way you feel about something - 'I felt BITTER that Suzie got the candy and I didn't' - or the way something feels - 'It is BITTERly cold outside'.
3. Another letter change gives you the liquid stuff that you make pancakes from.

Answer: Batter

In this case, BATTER is not referring to someone who swings a bat, but is all about yummy food. You can make pancakes from BATTER, or you can cover your fish in a BATTER and fry them up.
4. Change a letter to come up with a word for chatting with your friends in a fun, teasing way.

Answer: Banter

If you are joking around with your friends in a way that is not mean, you are BANTERing with them. Sometimes even just talking about things that aren't too important is called BANTER.
5. Change one letter to make a word that means a person who wishes for something very strongly.

Answer: Wanter

A WANTER is someone who feels a strong need to have something that they are missing in their life. It could be something like money or expensive toys, or something emotional like love or friendship.
6. Change another letter to get a word that describes the coldest part of the year.

Answer: Winter

In the northern hemisphere, WINTER officially lasts from the WINTER Solstice (around Dec. 21) until the Spring Equinox (around Mar. 21). Where I live, however, the snow usually lasts longer than that. My favourite part of WINTER is snowball fights.
7. With another letter change, you can make a word for a machine that wraps things, like cloth or plastic.

Answer: Winder

A WINDER that wraps other things could be either a machine or a person, really. WINDER is also the name for the spool or barrel around which material is wound.

Have you ever turned a key to wind up a toy? That is also a WINDER.
8. Change another letter to get a word meaning to walk around without a destination in mind.

Answer: Wander

Sometimes I really enjoy WANDERing around my neighbourhood. I could find myself somewhere I've never seen before! It helps to have a good sense of direction... if you WANDER off, you definitely want to be able to find your way home again.

It is also called WANDERing if you get off topic when you're talking.
9. Change one letter to come up with a word that describes the emotion you feel when you see something super amazing.

Answer: Wonder

To WONDER is not only to show awe and amazement at something, but to also express curiosity or doubt. I WONDER if you will believe what I'm telling you about the word WONDER.
10. One last little letter change will finally leave you with the end of the path. Your last word describes that place that is a little ways off... just over there.

Answer: Yonder

Hither and YONDER go together like here and there. In fact, that is pretty much what the words mean. YONDER is maybe a little more specific... you can actually see what is over YONDER, even if it is still a ways a way.
