Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Pete has to give up his room and move upstairs so that Grandpa won't have to climb as many stairs. Why does Grandpa have trouble with stairs?

Answer: He has a bad leg.

His leg broke in a construction accident and didn't heal properly. He lived with Grandma in Florida until she died, which is why he's moving in with Pete's family. Pete has to move up a floor and give Grandpa his room, which Pete is very angry about.
2. Pete writes a declaration of war to his Grandpa. How does he sign it?

Answer: The Secret Warrior

Pete decides that war is the only way to get his room back, and Steve gives him the idea about remaining hidden, striking quickly, retreating, and using a different name. Steve, who has a big vocabulary, messes up and calls a war of secret fighting and hiding "gorilla warfare", when the actual term is "guerilla warfare".
3. What kind of lessons does Jennifer take?

Answer: Ballet

She has tantrums because she doesn't have a tutu and claims everyone else in class has one. Her parents eventually cave in and get her one, and she performs for her family wearing it. Unlike what Pete thinks, most tutus don't need wires to stick out: stiff fabric is sewn in layers to make it keep its shape.
4. What is Pete's first attack against Grandpa?

Answer: Setting his alarm for 3 A.M.

Afraid that Grandpa didn't get the first note, Pete sets Grandpa's alarm for the middle of the night and leaves another note. Grandpa knows Pete did it and comes upstairs to kiss him, which Pete takes as a sign that he's losing the war.
5. Grandpa strikes back at Pete by stealing pieces to what game?

Answer: Monopoly

Pete and his friends are going to play, but when they open the box, they find only the board and a note from "The Old Man", showing that Grandpa has made an attack. At this point, they start swearing, but since Pete is writing a paper to his teacher, he can't include the actual words and makes up nonsense instead.
6. Grandpa takes Pete out early one morning to do what?

Answer: Go fishing

They get up before sunrise to go fishing thirty miles away. The two have a lot of fun, which makes Pete feel guilty about continuing the war. While Pete still wants his room back, he loves his Grandpa, and likes that they are starting to have fun again like they used to.
7. Grandpa gets back at Pete for stealing his watch by making it difficult for Pete to get ready for school. Which of these is NOT something Grandpa does?

Answer: Replaces Pete's lunch with dirt

In addition, Grandpa turns off Pete's alarm clock, puts his underwear in the hall closet, and hides all his books in different pieces of luggage. This prank must have taken a long time and careful planning to pull off in one night, especially with Grandpa's leg.
8. Pete's last act in the war is stealing something important from Grandpa. What?

Answer: Dentures

Pete feels so terrible when Grandpa comes into his room without his teeth that Pete gives the dentures back and declares the war over. While Grandpa has constantly said that war causes misery, he also says that the war has taken his mind off Grandma's death.

He's sad that the entire family didn't talk together about Grandpa's living arrangements and begins to muse about ways to resolve the situation.
9. Do Pete's parents find out about the "war" between Pete and Grandpa?

Answer: No

In his first note, Pete warns Grandpa not to tell his parents about the war or he won't speak to him again. At first, Grandpa sees the note as a joke, and even as the war progresses, keeps a light-hearted air about it.
10. Where does Grandpa live at the end of "The War with Grandpa"?

Answer: The basement

Grandpa, who used to work in construction, gets his old friends to help him renovate the basement. They turn it into an apartment with a bathroom, stove, TV, and a door to the outside. Grandpa even makes a sign for Pete's room after his friends move all Pete's stuff back to his original room.
