Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. D.J.: D.J. was smiling a huge smile in class one day. Why?

Answer: He just felt like smiling

D.J. was just happy. As he put it to Louis, "You need a reason to be sad. You don't need a reason to be happy."
2. JOHN: John had a problem that he could only read words that were written upside down. There's only one thing to do in this situation, Mrs. Jewls decided...teach John to stand on his head. John wasn't able to stand on his head, but someone else in the class could. Who?

Answer: Joe

Joe was John's best friend. Every time John fell over, Joe stood on John's head. What were friends for?
3. LESLIE: Leslie had a use for every part of her body, but she could not figure out what to do with her toes. Louis offered to take them off her hands, or rather, her feet, and give her how much apiece?

Answer: A nickel

Originally, Louis's offer was a nickel apiece. But after he inspected the merchandise, he lowered it to a nickel for the two biggest toes on each foot, and three cents apiece for the rest. Leslie decided to keep her toes.
4. MISS ZARVES: What happens in this story?

Answer: Nothing - there is no Miss Zarves

There is no Miss Zarves, and there is no nineteenth story. The other situations come from "Sideways Stories"'s sequels, "Wayside School Is Falling Down," and "Wayside School Gets A Little Stranger."
5. KATHY: Why didn't Kathy like Allison?

Answer: The cookie Allison gave her was stale and dusty

Mrs. Jewls gave Kathy the advice about her cat, but she was so worried about it that she locked it up in the closet. One day it got out, and ran away. Dameon was trying to teach Kathy how to play catch. When he threw her the ball, she closed her eyes and it hit her in the face. Allison gave her a cookie, and she put it in her desk because she thought Allison was probably a terrible cook. Three weeks later, she was hungry and ate it, and it was terrible. Jason was the resident pencil chewer, but that story comes in "Wayside School Is Falling Down."
6. RON: Ron had little feet, and couldn't play kickball. So no one would let him. When he complained to Louis, Louis challenged the rest of the kids to a game, just he and Ron against everyone else. What was the final score of the first game?

Answer: 26-2

The first game saw everyone else score 21 runs in the first inning, and only five in the second. That was because the bell rang. Louis scored both runs for his team, since Ron couldn't kick the ball further than three and a half feet and kept tripping. The second game was on the next day, and the final score there 57-2, with Louis once again scoring both runs for his team.
7. THE THREE ERICS: There were three Erics in Mrs. Jewls's class - Eric Ovens, Eric Fry, and Eric Bacon. Which one of the three was nicknamed "Fatso"?

Answer: Eric Bacon

Eric Bacon wasn't fat. He was the skinniest kid in class. But the other two Erics were fat, so he was called "Fatso." Eric Fry was a great athlete, but the other two weren't, so he was called "Butterfingers." Eric Ovens was very nice, but the other two were mean because of their nicknames, so he was called "Crabapple."
8. ALLISON: Allison was in a giving mood, doing things for teachers that they usually did for her. Which of the following did she not do in this story?

Answer: Gave Miss Mush her chocolate milk

Miss Mush was the lunch teacher, and Allison actually gave her a tangerine, not chocolate milk.
9. DAMEON: Mrs. Jewls sent Dameon to ask Louis if he wanted to watch a movie with them. After running up and down the stairs, Dameon discovered that something was missing. What?

Answer: His pencil

The movie was about "Turtles," but by the time Dameon finished bringing messages back and forth between Mrs. Jewls and Louis, it was over. Mrs. Jewls asked everyone to write something about turtles, but Dameon had lost his pencil. It turns out he dropped it while talking to Louis.
10. JENNY: What was weird about the day Jenny showed up to class late?

Answer: No one else was there

After arriving at school late, Jenny found that no one was there. She sat at her desk and played with her speller. As she worked, three men came in and informed her that most people don't come to school on Saturday.
11. TERRENCE: Terrence was a good athlete, but a bad sport. He would take the balls in games and kick them over the fence. Then he would insult whoever he was playing with. What did he say to Dameon?

Answer: "Take a train, peanut brain."

Terrence called Allison a Dixie cup, Dameon a peanut brain, and Stephen a warthog. He called Rondi "Ketchup Head" in "Wayside School Is Falling Down."
12. JOY: Joy forgot her lunch one day, so she stole Dameon's lunch when he left to get some milk. She framed four children for the crime by putting an item on their desk. Which of the following was not one of the four children?

Answer: Ron

She ate the sandwhich and put the baggie on Jason's desk. She ate the chocolate cake and put the wrapper on Allison's desk. She ate the apple and put the core on Deedee's desk. She then put the empty sack on Calvin's desk. Joy was praised for her detective work, and when her mother brought her own lunch to school, she graciously gave it to Dameon.

She got a Tootsie Roll Pop for her effort (and actually swiped another one). The guilt was terrible, however, and from then on her food tasted like Miss Mush's porridge.
13. NANCY: Nancy was a boy. He hated his name, for obvious reasons. He had a friend, a girl from the twenty-third story, who had a boy's name. What was her name?

Answer: Mac

Mac and Nancy switched names by spinning around 100 times in opposite directions. Mac became Nancy, and Nancy became Mac.
14. STEPHEN: Stephen went to school dressed as a goblin for Halloween. Unfortunately, since Halloween was on a Sunday, no one else did. What unexpected visitor also showed up to the Halloween party (that consisted of a few cookies)?

Answer: Mrs. Gorf

Mrs. Gorf came on Friday since none of the kids would be there Sunday. She was a ghost, since Louis had eaten her. After being ridiculed all day, Stephen was so relieved to have an ally that he went and hugged the ghost of Mrs. Gorf. She disappeared, and Stephen was a hero.
15. LOUIS: There was a blizzard on June 10th, so Louis came to the thirtieth floor to tell the children a story. It was a story about a school where weird things happened. What was not one of the things Louis mentioned?

Answer: Class presidents do more important things than turn on the lights

Of course, these events may seem strange and silly, but the kids at Wayside School think you're pretty strange and silly too, so it all evens out.
