Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Finish the title of the story, "The Fountain of Fair _______."

Answer: Fortune

"The Fountain of Fair Fortune" is a tale about three women and a knight who want to bathe in the fountain to rid themselves of sorrow, illness and bad luck. They come across three obstacles: a worm who asked "Pay me the proof of your pain"; words cut into the ground reading "Pay me the fruit of your labours"; and a river with a stone bearing the words "Pay me the treasure of your past".
2. In "The Tale of The Three Brothers", the three brothers meet death on a bridge they had made to cross the river.

Answer: True

"The Tale of the Three Brothers" is about three brothers who journey across a lonely road when they find themselves at a dangerous river. They wave their wands and make a bridge appear across the water. However, they find their path blocked by Death. Death congratulates the three brothers and gives them gifts.

The brothers ask for an unbeatable wand, the power to recall loved ones from death and a way to go forth from that place without being followed by Death.
3. In the story "The Wizard and the Hopping Pot", why did the son decide to help his muggle neighbors in the end?

Answer: Because the hopping pot was punishing him for every person he refused to help.

For every person the wizard refused to help, the hopping pot would give him a bit of that person's sufferings. For example, a woman came to the door and told him that her granddaughter was afflicted by a crop of warts. When the wizard refused to help, the hopping pot sprouted a single brass foot and was covered in warts.

The pot would hop around with him everywhere until he helped the muggles with there problems.
4. Finish the title of the tale. "The Warlock's Hairy _____".

Answer: Heart

The warlock was a wizard who saw that when you fall in love you become foolish and lose your appetite and your dignity. So the warlock swore to himself that he would never fall in love. One day he gave up his promise and found a woman worthy of winning his heart but he didn't feel anything.

When the woman was invited to a great feast, he took her down to the dungeon where he kept his heart in an enchanted crystal casket, but when he got there it was shriveled and hairy. He put the hairy heart back into his chest to occupy the empty cavity once more.

However, he didn't like the feeling it left him, so he tried to swap his own heart for the woman's which ended up killing them both.
5. In "Babbitty Rabbitty And Her Cackling Stump", Babbitty could turn into a tree stump.

Answer: False

Babbitty was a witch who lived as the washer woman for a village inhabited by muggles, wizards and witches. A foolish king decided that he alone should posses magical powers so he asked for someone in the village to come and teach him how to do magic. One brave charlatan came forward and started teaching the foolish king some simple magic tricks, though of course none of them were actual magic.

Then one day the king announced that he was going to prove his magical ability, so the charlatan went to Babbitty for help.

She agreed to help him as long as the king didn't know she was a witch. So, on the day of the performance, Babbitty hid behind a bush close to where the king was standing and did the magic for him. However, the king decided to reawaken a dead animal, which of course is impossible. Of course, the king couldn't do the magic so the crowd laughed.

The charlatan then told the king that Babbitty was a witch. Babbitty then ran way from the village and pretended to turn into a tree.

The king's men found the tree and attempted to kill Babbitty by chopping the tree down. However, Babbitty, being a witch, was able to turn into a rabbit and had hidden in the tree, which of course was now a tree stump. Babbitty, as the tree stump, threatened to put a curse on the village if the wizards and witches there were not aloud to practice magic. From then on the magical people of the village were aloud to practice magic in peace.
6. From Albus Dumbledore's notes on "The Wizard and The Hopping Pot": What does Mrs Bloxam call the young wizard?

Answer: Wee Willykins

It reads:
"Then the little golden pot danced with delight- hoppitty hoppitty hop!-on its tiny rosy toes! Wee Willykins had cured all the dollies of their poorly tum-tums, and the little pot was so happy that it filled up with sweeties for Wee Willykins and the dollies!
'But don't forget to brush your teethy-pegs!' cried the pot.
And Wee Willykins kissed and huggled the hoppitty pot and promised always to help the dollies and never to be an old grumpy-wumpkins again."
7. From Albus Dumbledore's notes on "The Fountain of Fair Fortune": Who wrote to Dumbledore to complain about the story?

Answer: Lucius Malfoy

His letter read:
"Any work of fiction or non-fiction that depicts interbreeding between wizards and Muggles should be banned from the bookshelves of Hogwarts. I do not wish my son to be influenced into sullying the purity of his blood line by reading stories that promote wizard-Muggle marriage."
8. From Albus Dumbledore's notes on "The Warlock's Hairy Heart": Dumbledore notes the resemblance of the warlock's actions to the creation of a _______.

Answer: Horcrux

A horcrux is an object, usually with value or special to the creator, where he/she has hidden a part of his/her soul for the purpose of becoming immortal. To create one you must commit murder but the whole process is unknown. Here are some of the only fool proof ways of destroying a horcrux:
Fiendfyre
Basilisk venom
The sword of Godric Gryffindor
The killing curse
9. From Albus Dumbledore's notes on "Babbitty Rabbitty and her Cackling Stump": Which unforgivable curse did Dumbledore mention near the end of his notes?

Answer: Crucio

As Babbitty threatens to put a curse on the village, so whenever they hurt a witch or wizard it "will feel like an axe stroke in your own side, until you wish you could die of it!" Dumbledore notes that the cruciatus curse had not yet been made illegal and she could have used that curse to produce precisely the sensation with which Babbitty threatened the king.
10. From Albus Dumbledore's notes on "The Tale of the Three Brothers": "When his wand's oak and hers is holly, Then to _____ would be folly."

Answer: marry

Dumbledore includes three rhymes that refer to different wand types:
"When his wand's oak and hers is holly,
Then to marry would be folly."
"Rowan gossips, chestnut drones,
Ash is stubborn, hazel moans."
"Wand of elder, never prosper."
