Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Tom, don't forget your paper on the Crusades," Dad shouted. Which civilization invented paper?

Answer: Chinese

Scraps of fibre were soaked in water, then made into a paste. This was pushed through something like a sieve, formed into sheets, and dried.
2. Susan created a birthday card in her art class. Mr. Waterman's great improvement of which writing implement helped her?

Answer: Fountain pen

All the items would have helped, but only the fountain pen was the one very much improved by L. E. Waterman of New York. He changed the design so that the flow of ink was much steadier and less prone to leaking.
3. Oops! An accident in the calligraphy class. Tomasina stained her new white top. Why should she thank Alva Fisher?

Answer: Washing machine

In 1906, the first electric washing machine was invented. By the 1940's these machines began to resemble what we see in our utility rooms.
4. Alicia is thrilled she can play contact sports. What did Eugen Fick invent which helped Alicia?

Answer: Contact lenses

The first contact lenses were made from glass, in 1887. (The idea had been around for a much longer time). Nowadays we have disposable contact lenses.
5. Dad is very grateful to James Dewar for inventing the thermos flask. What country did Dewar come from?

Answer: Scotland

The container around the glass flask was originally made from nickel but this was replaced by plastic in the 1920's.
6. It's 98 degrees Fahrenheit in the shade, so a very big thanks to von Platen and Munters. What is their claim to fame?

Answer: Refrigerator

When liquid turns into steam it absorbs heat from the surrounding area. A compressor forces the liquid through the back of the fridge at pressure, where an evaporator transforms the liquid into gas.
7. Aunt Maire, in Ireland, is very happy she has been awarded the gold insignia for donating 25 pints of blood over the years. Where was the first blood bank established?

Answer: Moscow

It is just over a hundred years since blood was classified into families, (although blood transfusions began in 1825). In 1931 Yukin began the first blood bank in Moscow. This could be used in accidents when needed.
8. Georges Claude used the properties of neon in 1910 to make light bulbs of different shapes and sizes, and modern advertising was born. What did the first sign advertise?

Answer: Barber

It was a barber's shop in Paris. The first product advertised was also in Paris and was for 'Cinzano'.
9. In 1906 for which group was the Fordson primarily designed?

Answer: Farmers

It was a tractor, it means 'son of Ford' and was affordable, so it was a great blessing for farmers making their work easier and faster.
10. "I am giving a prize for the best project on an inventor of your choice," the history teacher announced. "I'll write about Appert", said Mimi. What did he work with?

Answer: Food

Nicholas Appert won 12,000 francs in 1810, ( a fortune back then), for developing a way of conserving food in jars, sealed with a cork. Napoleon was in power in France then, remember he was the one who is supposed to have said,"an army marches on its stomach."
