Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At the beginning of the novel, thirteen year-old Lemony is in the Hemlock Tearoom and Stationery Shop having tea with his parents before he catches a train. What's wrong with that?

Answer: The people he is with aren't his parents.

Lemony "says" he is with his parents, but often what he says differs greatly from what is real. The mother does address him as "son" and talks about how proud of him they are. At the end of chapter one, Lemony reveals that they aren't his parents, but doesn't say who they are.
2. While drinking his tea, Lemony spreads his napkin in his lap. What's wrong with that?

Answer: He's using it to hide a note he had secretly been given.

A woman that Lemony describes as being tall with wild hair enters the tearoom and brushes by Lemony's table. She then makes a purchase and quickly leaves, but not before she drops a note in Lemony's lap.
3. A note instructs Lemony to go to the bathroom and climb out the window which turns out to be several feet above his head, but Lemony finds a ladder and completes the task. What's wrong with that?

Answer: He has put the ladder in the bathroom himself.

Lemony "finds" a large package wrapped in brown paper in one of the stalls. Of course, it is the ladder which he tells the reader he put there himself. He uses it to get out of the window and then gets in the car of the woman who had delivered the note.
4. The woman in the car, S. Theodora Markson, tells Lemony that she will be training him as her apprentice. What's wrong with that?

Answer: Her method of instruction includes examples and nagging.

Theodora informs Lemony that she will show him what she did and then tell him to do other things. She does allow him to ask questions, but often says "Stop asking the wrong questions."
5. Before Theodora and Lemony take off in her car, Theodora takes a cup of hot tea off the dashboard and dumps it out the window. What's wrong with that?

Answer: The tea contains a sleep inducing substance.

Theodora tells Lemony that the tea, which had a strong sweet smell, was laced with laudanum, and a few drops would have put him out. Furthermore, she says he would have been in danger from the people he was with in the tearoom.
6. As Theodora and Lemony drive out of town, they pass some workers digging up the street for the construction of a new fountain. What's wrong with that?

Answer: Lemony is supposed to meet someone there the next day.

Lemony was to meet someone at the worksite, and they were going to measure the depth of the hole the workers had dug. He has a new tape measure in his suitcase at the train station and is upset when Theodora says they don't need to go get it because she has bought some clothes for him.
7. As Theodora and Lemony approach their destination, a town called Stain'd-by-the-Sea, a bell rings and Theodora says they are to put on masks (which are in the backseat) to protect them from the water pressure. What's wrong with that?

Answer: There is no water around that area.

Lemony can't understand how they can be in danger from water pressure since there isn't any water around. This is because the part of sea around the town had been drained to save the town.
8. One of the sites in Stain'd-by-the-Sea that Theodora points out to Lemony is a place called the Clusterous Forest. What's wrong with that?

Answer: It is a forest of seaweed.

It was thought that once the sea had been drained, the seaweed would die, but strangely it began to survive on the dry land. Theodora tells Lemony not to ever go in it because it is "a wild and lawless place, not fit for man or beast."
9. As Theodora and Lemony begin their quest, they go to a strange mansion where a butler answers the door and tells them to wait in the library. What's wrong with that?

Answer: There are only a few books in the room.

Lemony doesn't think that any of the books look very interesting, but he finally chooses one and reads a few pages of a novel about a teenage boy named Johnny Tremain who lived during the American Revolution.
10. Theodora and Lemony find that the lady of the mansion, Mrs. Murphy Sallis, has had a valuable statue stolen. Furthermore, she says she knows that the Mallahan family is responsible for the crime. What's wrong with that?

Answer: She says that the Mallahans are nice people.

Mrs. Murphy Sallis tells Theodora and Lemony that the Mallahans have been enemies of her family for generations, and they had said they would someday steal the statue. But then she says she doesn't want anything to happen to them because they're "nice people."
