Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Enid Blyton's 'Famous Five' go on lots of adventures together and solve many mysteries. Four members of the gang are George, Anne, Dick and Timmy but who is the fifth?

Answer: Julian

Julian, Dick and Anne are siblings while George, whose full name is Georgina, is their cousin. Timmy is a faithful dog belonging to George who helps and protects the children on many of their adventures. The gang featured in twenty-one novels in which they went camping, explored the countryside and solved many mysteries.
2. 'Little Women', written by Louisa May Alcott, tells the tale of the four March sisters who are growing up in Civil War era America. Three of the sisters are Jo, Beth and Amy but which sister is missing from this list?

Answer: Meg

'Little Women' has remained a favourite children's novel ever since its first publication in 1868, as generations of little girls have identified with the four March sisters and their experiences growing up. Meg, the oldest of the four sisters, is maternal and romantic. Jo, the second eldest sister and the book's main heroine, is an adventurous, independent-minded tomboy who loves writing and dislikes traditionally girly things, and is fiercely protective of her mother and sisters, especially since their father is away from home fighting in the war.

The two youngest sisters are Beth, who is extremely sweet and shy but who is in poor health, and Amy, the youngest, who can sometimes be vain and selfish but who does truly love her family and is a keen artist.
3. In J. K. Rowling's 'Harry Potter' series of books, Molly and Arthur Weasley have seven children, six of them are Bill, Charlie, Fred, George, Ron and Ginny but which Weasley sibling is missing from this list?

Answer: Percy

The Weasley family play an important role in the 'Harry Potter' series from the very first book, 'Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone'. Ron Weasley meets Harry Potter on the Hogwarts Express on their first day at school and the two become best friends.

The Weasleys also act as a surrogate family to Harry, who is an orphan and who is treated cruelly by the aunt and uncle with whom he lives. The seven Weasley siblings are, in order from oldest to youngest, Bill, Charlie, Percy, the twins Fred and George, Ron and Ginny (whose full name is Ginevra). Percy is something of an outcast as he apparently turned his back on his family in order to concentrate on his job at the Ministry of Magic, though he eventually returns to fight against Voldemort alongside his family.
4. C. S. Lewis' classic 1950 novel 'The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe' features the four Pevensie children, three of whom are named Peter, Edmund and Lucy, but who is the fourth sibling?

Answer: Susan

The Pevensies are evacuated to the countryside during the second world war to escape the bombing of London. They are sent to stay with a kindly professor and, while exploring his house, Lucy stumbles through a magical wardrobe into Narnia, a magical land inhabited by talking animals. Lucy tries to persuade her siblings of what she has discovered but they do not believe her until they too find themselves in Narnia. On their arrival in Narnia the Pevensie children discover that they may be the only people who can help fulfil an ancient prophecy which will free Narnia from the eternal winter which the White Witch has cursed it to endure.
5. 'Ballet Shoes' is a novel by Noel Streatfeild which tells the story of the three Fossil sisters, two of whom are called Pauline and Posy, but what is the name of the third?

Answer: Petrova

'Ballet Shoes' was first published in 1936 and tells the tale of a well-intentioned but absent-minded scientist called Matthew Brown who finds and adopts three baby girls on his world travels before sending them home to be raised by his great niece. The girls, Pauline, Petrova and Posy, are given the surname Fossil due to their adopted father's love of the subject.

The girls grow up in a loving, if unconventional, family environment. Pauline and Posy dream of being on the stage while Petrova has no interest in dancing or acting, and only wants to fly airplanes.
6. In Roald Dahl's popular novel 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory', five children win golden tickets which allow them to go on a tour of Willy Wonka's famous factory. Four of the tickets are found by Charlie Bucket, Violet Beauregarde, Veruca Salt and Mike Teavee, but which child finds the fifth ticket?

Answer: Augustus Gloop

When eccentric sweet-maker Willy Wonka announces that he will be allowing five children, accompanied by one adult, to visit his notoriously secretive factory if they find one of the golden tickets hidden in his Wonka Bars, the quest for the five elusive tickets causes worldwide panic as children buy up the chocolate bars in the hope of winning this chance of a lifetime.

The first ticket is found by the extremely greedy Augustus Gloop, the second by the spoiled and unpleasant Veruca Salt, the third by the gum-chewing Violet Beauregarde, the fourth by couch potato Mike Teavee and the final ticket by the book's hero, Charlie Bucket.
7. In the stories that Scottish author J. M. Barrie wrote about Peter Pan, the boy who wouldn't grow up, Wendy Darling, who travels to Neverland with Peter, has two brothers one of whom is named John but what is the name of her other brother?

Answer: Michael

Peter Pan first appeared in 'The Little White Dove', a novel for adults which J. M. Barrie published in 1902 but he first came to fame when he featured in Barrie's 1904 play 'Peter and Wendy', which is also known as 'Peter Pan; or, the Boy Who Wouldn't Grow Up'.

In 1911 Barrie published a novel based on his popular stage play and Peter Pan has remained an extremely popular character ever since. In both the book and play, Peter lives in Neverland where he leads a gang of 'Lost Boys', children who got lost in Kensington Gardens. Having befriended Wendy and been impressed by her story-telling ability, he invites her to fly to Neverland with him and become a mother to his gang.

In Neverland the children have numerous exciting adventures, learn to fly, meet fairies and do battle with the dastardly pirate Captain Hook.
8. In Beatrix Potter's 1902 book 'The Tale of Peter Rabbit', Peter has three well-behaved sisters, two are called Flopsy and Cottontail but what is the name of the third?

Answer: Mopsy

Peter's mother regularly warns her children to stay out of Mr. McGregor's garden, reminding them that their father had been caught and baked into a pie after his last visit to the bad-tempered gardener's land. Although Peter's sisters are well-behaved rabbits and obey their mother, Peter, a mischievous bunny, is tempted by the goodies growing in Mr. McGregor's garden, and ignores his mother's warnings.
9. Lemony Snicket's 'A Series of Unfortunate Events' books tell the exciting story of the three Baudelaire children, the oldest of whom are Violet and Klaus, but what is the name of their baby sister?

Answer: Sunny

Lemony Snicket is the pen-name of American author Daniel Handler, who introduced the Baudelaire children in his 1999 novel 'The Bad Beginning'. Over the thirteen novels in the series the three recently-orphaned children have had to rely on their wits and bravery to defeat the plans of their evil guardian, Count Olaf, who is always plotting to get his hands on their family fortune.
10. Kenneth Grahame's novel 'The Wind in the Willows' follows the adventures of four animal friends, three of whom are a mole, a water vole and a toad. What type of animal is the wise and kindly fourth member of the group?

Answer: Badger

The sweet but shy mole begins the adventure when he tires of spring-cleaning, leaves his home and meets and befriends a water vole, simply known as Rat. Rat and Mole spend many happy days relaxing on the river before visiting a friend of Rat's, the rich and jolly, but reckless, Toad.

They also later meet up with the kindly and wise Badger. Worried by Toad's obsession with motor cars the three friends do their best to stop him before he gets himself into trouble. Unfortunately, Mole, Rat and Badger are too late and Toad is sent to prison, leaving his grand house to be taken over by a gang of weasels and stoats.
