Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What did Dobby not try to do to stop Harry from going/staying at Hogwarts?

Answer: Send letters, from Harry's friends, about the dangers at Hogwarts

Dobby never sent Harry any letters from his friends; instead, he ensured that Harry did not receive letters sent to him by his friends, in hopes of discouraging Harry from returning to Hogwarts.
2. Where should a wizard or witch go if they wish to purchase Dark Arts items at Borgin and Burkes?

Answer: Knockturn Alley

While the Leaky Cauldron is where the Muggle world is separated from the Wizarding world, and Diagon Alley is where wizards/witches shop for their supplies, Knockturn Alley is the place to go for all things related to the Dark Arts. Gringotts, of course, is the wizarding bank.
3. While Gilderoy Lockhart attempted many spells, which spell did he successfully cast, even though it did not have the desired results he expected?

Answer: Obliviate - memory charm

Lockhart attempted to cast a memory charm on Harry and Ron in the Chamber of Secrets; however, he was using Ron's wand, which was broken. The spell backfired, and unfortunately for him, he actually could cast memory charms. The backfired spell erased his own memory.

Lockhart also cast Peskypiksi Pesternomi (which didn't work) and Brackium Emendo (which removed all of the bones in Harry's arm, instead of repairing a broken arm). He never cast Expelliarmus, but did have this spell cast on him.
4. Who was never in possession of Tom's Riddle's Diary?

Answer: Draco Malfoy

Lucius was in possession of the diary first, giving it to Ginny (albeit unknown to her). Harry gained possession after Ginny threw the diary in the second floor girls' bathroom. Draco was never in possession of the diary.
5. Which is true of the Whomping Willow?

Answer: A flying Ford Anglia crashed into it, damaging the tree

Ron and Harry crashed Arthur Weasley's magical, flying car into the Whomping Willow. The tree was planted on Hogwart's grounds much earlier than the start of this book, Pomona Sprout was a professor, not a woodland creature, and the tree is not peaceful towards anyone.
6. Which book was not written by Gilderoy Lockhart?

Answer: Benfits of Blinding a Basilisk

"Magical Me", "Holidays with Hags", and his guide to household pests were all books written by Gilderoy Lockhart (among many others). "Benefits of Blinding a Basilisk" (not a book at all) was something that became useful later in the book, thanks to Fawkes.
7. Which of the following was used to destroy Tom Riddle's diary?

Answer: Basilisk fang

Harry was able to destroy Tom Riddle, and the diary, by puncturing the diary with the fang of a Basilisk.
8. Who could not speak Parseltongue?

Answer: Severus Snape

Salazar Slytherin and Tom Riddle were Parseltongues. Harry gained this ability when Voldemort tried to kill him (leaving a piece of himself in Harry). Severus Snape, while being the head of Slytherin house, never has, and never does, have the ability to speak to snakes.
9. The Chamber of Secrets was last opened 50 years ago. During this time, the Basilisk killed a Hogwart's student, a muggleborn student. This student's name was Myrtle.

Answer: True

Myrtle (also referred to as Moaning Myrtle) was the first Hogwarts student to be murdered by the opening of the Chamber of Secrets. Fifty years prior to this book, the chamber was opened by Tom Riddle. Hearing a boy's voice in the girls' bathroom, Myrtle looked outside her stall, straight into big yellow eyes. She now inhabits the bathroom she was slain in.
10. The last remaining descendant of Salazar Slytherin was:

Answer: Tom Riddle

The Heir of Slytherin was Tom Riddle, also the man responsible for opening the Chamber of Secrets 50 years prior.
11. Which of the following is necessary to open the entrance to the Chamber of Secrets?

Answer: Speaking in Parseltongue to the sinks in the girls' bathroom

The entrance to the Chamber of Secrets, located in the second floor girls' bathroom, is opened by speaking the words "Open" in Parseltongue. Ginny was able to gain access because of Tom Riddle; who was able to control her and make her use Parseltongue to open the entrance. Harry was able to open the entrance by speaking Parseltongue as well.
12. While Aragog was willing to control his children from attacking Hagrid, Harry and Ron had to escape the forest before they were eaten.

Answer: True

Harry and Ron narrowly escaped, only because they were saved by Arthur Weasley's enchanted car, which came to their rescue and drove them out of the forest.
13. When the Chamber of Secrets was first opened, 50 years ago, which monster was believed to be Slytherin's monster, responsible for killing a student and living in the Chamber?

Answer: Aragog

When the Chamber of Secrets was first opened, 50 years prior to this book, Hagrid was framed as being the Heir of Slytherin, and Aragog was thought to be the monster within the Chamber that killed Myrtle.
14. Who never went down into the Chamber of Secrets?

Answer: Rubeus Hagrid

Harry and Lockhart went down into the Chamber together (along with Ron Weasley). Once down there, Harry came across Ginny's body. Hagrid, while being falsely accused of being the Heir to Slytherin, did not even know where the Chamber was.
15. Which of the following was not said by Gilderoy Lockhart?

Answer: Harry Potter! My dear boy, today is your lucky day. How lucky for you to have the opportunity to meet me!

The three correct quotes were said by Gilderoy Lockhart. The incorrect one is something I made up that wouldn't surprise me to hear Lockhart say to anyone.
