Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Through which country does the River Po flow 405 miles (652 km) to the sea?

Answer: Italy

The Po River in Northern Italy is the longest river in the country. It arises in the Cottain Alps from which it flows through the cities of Turin, Piacenza and Ferrara before its empties into the Adriatic Sea. The river is connected to Milan by canals; Leonardo da Vinci participated in their design. There is much conjecture as to how the Po got its name; one common theory is that it derives from the Celtic or Veneti name for the river which was "Padus."
2. Which one of the Teletubbies is Po?

Answer: the short red one

"Teletubbies" is a British television programme for preschool children. It features four Teletubbies, each identified by their colour, the television screens on their tummies, and the antenna on top of their heads. Po is the shortest of the lot, red in colour, and has an antenna which looks very much like the wand used by children to produce soap bubbles.

She is the youngest of the group and her favourite thing to do is to ride her scooter. Po was played by Pui Fan Lee in the original series (1997-2001) and by Rachelle Beinart in the revival (2014-). Pui Fan Lee is Chinese and Po can be occasionally heard to say a few words in Cantonese.
3. Po is the scientific abbreviation for which element on the periodic table?

Answer: Polonium

Polonium is so rare that it is studied almost entirely in traces; there are no stable isotopes. It is a naturally radioactive element which Marie and Pierre Curie found in 1898 in uranium ore. Marie Curie named it Polonium after her country of birth, Poland, the Latin name for which is Polonia.

The element is remarkably dangerous to humans; it was used in 2006 to kill Alexander Litvinenko who had defected from the Russian KGB to the British MI6.
4. From the 1880s, the colloquial British term "po" has referred to what?

Answer: a chamber pot

"Po" is a British slang term for a chamber pot. It entered English from the French "pot de chambre". Before the common use of indoor plumbing, a chamber pot was a container kept in the bedroom (French: "chambre") in which to defecate or urinate in the night.

Other names for a po include Jordan, guzunder, potty and jerry. Some form of chamber pot has been used by many cultures. Antique porcelain chamber pots, often highly decorated, are valuable collectibles.
5. In the motion picture "Kung Fu Panda" (2008) and its two sequels (2011, 2016) and in the television series "Kung Fu Panda: Legends of Awesomeness," who is Po?

Answer: the kung fu panda himself

The various stories about Kung Fu Panda describe an unathletic, overweight panda bear who is somehow chosen to be the protector of the Valley of Peace when a dangerous criminal, Tai Lung, escapes from prison. The panda, Po, assists his adoptive father, Mr Ping, a goose, in his noodle shop.

Despite difficulties in training, Po overcomes many obstacles to become a hero. He was voiced by Jack Black in all three films but not the television programme.
6. If the doctor writes "PO" on the prescription, what does that mean?

Answer: take by mouth

The Latin expression "per os" (meaning "by mouth") is abbreviated "PO" to indicate that the medication prescribed is to be taken orally.
7. What did Fernão do Pó do for a living that earned him a place in history?

Answer: navigator-explorer

Fernão do Pó was a Portuguese sailor, navigator and explorer of the southwestern coast of Africa. His work on behalf of King Alfonso V of Portugal (1432-1481) resulted in a landed title as well as several places named after him. He "discovered" the islands in the Gulf of Guinea.
8. A "po" is an article of clothing in the traditional dress of which Asian nation?

Answer: Korea

Korean traditional dress, based on the attire of the Goguryeo Kingdom (37 BC-668 AD), is known collectively as "hanbok." "Hanbok" literally translates as "Korean clothing". With "hanbok," an overcoat or outer robe called "po" is traditional. These garments were normally very colourful and there was a complex code of which people properly wore which colours.

When the sumptuary laws were lifted, all social classes could wear all of the colours, including those previously reserved to the upper class. Western clothing has made huge inroads in Korea but "hanbok" is still worn for special occasions, festivals, first birthdays, Lunar New Year, and other ceremonies.

Many modern Koreans do not own their own "hanbok" but rather them from shops which specialize in providing this historic attire.
9. Lauren Oliver, award-winning author of over a dozen books for young readers, wrote "Liesl & Po" in 2011. Leisl is an orphan locked away by her stepmother. Who is Po?

Answer: a ghost

Liesl's father dies and she is sent to live with a cruel stepmother who locks her in an attic bedroom. She is mostly alone save for the company of shadows and mice. One night, a ghost named Po appears to her and they meet each other's loneliness. That same night, Will, an alchemist's apprentice, makes a mistake which sweeps the three of them -- Liesl, Po and Will -- into a great adventure.

The text is suitable for a fifth-grade reader. "Liesl & Po" was nominated for the 2012 E.B. White Read-Aloud Award and won honourable mention.
10. In the US television series "Kung Fu" (1972-1975), who was the character named Po?

Answer: the Shaolin master who trained Caine

It is odd that one of the principals of the programme, Master Po, was dead in all but the first episode where he was killed by the Emperor's nephew. Keye Luke played the role of Master Po in 48 episodes but the other 47 were all flashbacks. Kwai Chang Caine was a half-American half-Chinese orphan given to a Shaolin monastery to be raised.

He killed the Emperor's nephew to avenge the death of his master but then had to flee from China to the Old West to avoid capture and execution. Master Po would often give (in a flashback) Caine a bit of Taoist philosophy, direct from the "Tao Te Ching," which would serve to resolve some problem in the present episode.

In the movie "Pulp Fiction" (1994) Jules Winnfield tells Vincent Vega he is done being a hit man and "basically I'm just gonna walk the earth." Vega asks what he means by "walk the earth" and Jules answers, "You know, like Caine in 'Kung Fu', walking place to place, meet people and get in adventures."
