Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What word is defined as "a woolen fabric with a hard-textured surface and no nap"?

Answer: worsted

A lot of suits are made with worsted. Of course, "worsted" also means "defeated" or "gained the advantage over" as in "The Mets worsted the Yankees." Oddly enough, "bested" means the same thing, as in "The Mets bested the Yankees." Go figure the English language!
2. What one word would fit into all of these blanks: "It's Only a _____," "The Last _____," and "_____ House Massacre"?

Answer: movie

"It's Only a Movie" is a cheap-o spoof of horror movies. "The Last Movie" (1971), not to be confused with "The Last Picture Show" (1971), starred and was directed and co-written by Dennis Hopper. "Movie House Massacre" was another cheap-o spoof of horror movies.
3. Which one of these songs is from Lerner and Loewe's musical "Camelot"?

Answer: If Ever I Would Leave You

"Camelot" is about the legend of King Arthur, Guinevere, Lancelot, and the Round Table. "It's only a model!" (Patsy from "Monty Python and the Holy Grail.) "Camelot" is based on T.H. White's novel "The Once and Future King."
4. Wrestler George "The Animal" Steele played wrestler Tor Johnson in this 1994 movie:

Answer: Ed Wood

Wood was the director of "Plan Nine from Outer Space," considered by many to be the worst movie ever. Tim Burton's movie "Ed Wood" was about the director's "life" and about his group of wacky friends, including Tor Johnson, a Los Angeles pro wrestler who played Inspector Daniel Clay in "Plan Nine."
5. In 1947, an American general and secretary of state designed a program for helping Europe recover from the devastation of World War II. What was the program called? Three words starting with "the."

Answer: the Marshall Plan

George Catlett Marshall is known for three things: he was in overall command of US military forces in World War II and deserved much of the credit for the Allied victory; he was secretary of state under Truman after the war; and he devised the Marshall Plan, which funneled more than 13 billion dollars into European recovery after the war, from 1948 to 1953.
6. How many muses did the ancient Greeks have?

Answer: 9

They had muses for music, dance, comedy, tragedy, three kinds of poetry, history, and astronomy. Their job was to inspire mankind to create beauty. I think we should add a tenth: the muse of trivia. Any suggestions for names?
7. Antonio Carlos Jobim wrote this song hit on the Verve label in 1963: "The Girl ____ _______." Fill in the last two words of the title. No punctuation, please.

Answer: from Ipanema

"The Girl from Ipanema" is one of the great jazz/bossa nova crossover songs, and it still sounds as fresh as ever today. Jobim on piano, Astrid Gilberto on vocal, her brother Joao on guitar, and the great Stan Getz on sax were an unbeatabe combination. Brazilian Jobim (1925-1994) pioneered bossa nova (Portuguese for "new wave,") a very popular genre of the 60's.
8. What group of Scottish islands includes Lewis, Harris, North Uist and South Uist?

Answer: the Outer Hebrides

The Outer Hebrides are off the northwest coast of Scotland. They include the towns of Clachan-a-luib, Cheese Bay, and Greosabagh. The Isle of Skye is in the nearby Inner Hebrides.
9. What 1975-77 TV series starred Martin Landau, Barbara Bain, and Barry Morse?

Answer: Space: 1999

Both Bain and Landau, real-life spouses at the time but now divorced, starred in "Space:1999," "Mission Impossible," and "Savage." Barry Morse, as Lt. Phil Gerard, co-starred with David Jansen in "The Fugitive."
10. Ah! It's always wonderful when we get to this point in the quiz where we put it all together and get the common bond. It's a movie title and it consists of the answers, or parts of the answers, for questions 5 through 9. Just fill in the blank with five words. Two of them are "Plan" and "From."

Answer: Plan Nine from Outer Space

WORST (Q.1) MOVIE (Q.2) EVER (3). Directed by Ed Wood (4) PLAN (5) NINE (6) FROM (7) OUTER (8) SPACE (9). When bad movies are discussed and written about, "Plan Nine" must be included, along with other classics like "Robot Monster" (my favorite) and "Attack of the Killer Tomatoes." Ed Wood never made a good movie (see "Glen or Glenda") but this is his worst. Screenplay, acting, directing, you name it, it sucked.
