Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the surname of Tony, who in 1986, became the first British ice hockey player to be drafted by an NHL team?

Answer: Hand

Tony Hand was perhaps the most talented hockey player ever to come out of Scotland, and began his British Hockey League (BHL) career with Murrayfield Racers in 1982. In 1986 Hand was drafted by Edmonton Oilers of NHL and attended training camp alongside such greats as Wayne Gretzky, Marty McSorley and Mark Messier and, as part of his Canadian experience, played three games for junior Western Hockey League's Victoria Cougars, in which he scored eight points.
The Oilers were impressed enough to offer Hand a one year contract, but homesick for Scotland he declined the offer and returned to play for Murrayfield.
A hand is a unit of measurement, often used to measure the height of horses and it is the equivalent of four inches.
2. In the "Legend of Zelda" video game franchise, what is the name of the Hylian being, charged with saving the land of Hyrule?

Answer: Link

Link is an iconic hero, always ready to battle evil forces and explore new lands while collecting anything that may assist him on his quest and performing good deeds for anyone that may need his help along the way. His bravery, compassion, determination, and wisdom know no bounds, much to the relief of the residents of Hyrule, whom he saves time after time.

A link as a measurement is based upon an old land surveying tool, called a Gunter's chain, which was a metal chain 66 feet long with 100 links. One link therefore was sixty six hundredths of a foot, or 7.92 inches (20.11 cm).
3. Hugely popular in Indonesia, which spice is added to tobacco to create kretek cigarettes?

Answer: Clove

Kretek cigarettes are by far the most popular cigarette available in Indonesia and the name "kretek" comes from the crackling sound made by the burning cloves. Kretek cigarettes contain about two thirds tobacco and one third minced dried clove buds, which have been shown to numb the back of the throat of users, leading to a diminished pharyngeal reflex or "gag reflex", which can be a cause of choking.

A clove was a 13th century British measurement of weight, equal to seven pounds, if weighing wool but eight pounds if dealing in cheese.
4. One of the few superheroes without any superpowers, who first appeared in "Detective Comics 27" in 1939?

Answer: Batman

Batman is an incredibly popular comic book superhero and has been so right from the start. His appearance in "Detective Comics 27" was so well received that by 1940, he had his own comic book which was originally published quarterly but later became bimonthly and eventually monthly. During that time he has battled foes such as Poison Ivy, The Riddler, The Joker and The Penguin, coming out on top most of the time.

The batman was used in the central Ottoman system of weights and in the early 1800s was equal to six okas, or 16 lb 8 oz. By 1931, the Turkish system of weights was metrified, making the oka worth exactly one kilogram, and the batman became ten okas, or ten kilograms.
5. In Terry Pratchett's "Discworld" series of novels, who or what is Binky?

Answer: Horse

Binky is the horse ridden by Death in the "Discworld" series of novels, and is described as "a large, magnificent white horse, white not as snow but as milk, because milk has more life than snow." Binky was Death's third horse, as he tried a skeletal horse, but bits kept falling off, and also a fiery black horse, but he was so fiery that he often set light to his bedding.

A horse as a measurement is used in the sport of horse racing, where a race is won by a (horse) length, which is the equivalent of eight feet or 2.4 metres.
In close races, this is shortened to a neck, a head or a nose.
6. Which unit of length was leader of the UK Labour Party between 1980 and 1983?

Answer: Michael Foot

Michael Foot was a former journalist who was initially elected as MP for Plymouth Davenport in 1945. He held this seat for the next ten years until he was surprisingly beaten by Conservative candidate Dame Joan Vickers at the 1955 general election. In 1960, he stood in the Blaenau Gwent by-election, for the seat vacated by the death of Nye Bevan, and once again entered parliament. He rose through the ranks, eventually becoming leader of the Labour party in 1980, before resigning in 1983, following a landslide general election victory by the Conservatives.

A foot is an imperial measurement of length, equal to 0.3048 of a metre. There are 12 inches in a foot, and three feet in a yard.
7. Queen Alexandra, the wife of Edward VII, started a fashion craze when she ordered a wrap, made from the hide of which agricultural pest?

Answer: Mole

Moles are small mammals, the largest only reaching about 17 cm (six and a half inches) in length, such that it must take quite a few to make a wrap. Moles spend much of their time underground in an elaborate labyrinth of tunnels and will eat almost their own body weight worth of earthworms per day, and it is for this reason, coupled with the unsightly mole hills they create, that they are considered a pest to agriculturalists.

A mole is a measurement used mainly by chemists and engineers for measurements concerning atoms and molecules.
8. Which name goes before Stewart, Steiger and Davis to give an British singer, an American actor and a sailor who represented both USA and New Zealand in Olympic Games?

Answer: Rod

The singer is of course Rod Stewart, vocalist with the legendary Faces before going solo and having hits all around the world, while the actor is Rod Steiger, probably best remembered as Marlon Brando's brother in "On The Waterfront" (1954) or for his Oscar winning performance as the chief of police in "In the Heat of the Night" (1967) opposite Sidney Poitier.
Rod Davis represented USA in the 1984 Olympics, winning gold in sailing's soling class and after emigrating to New Zealand, was selected to represent his new country in the 1992 Olympics, where he took silver in the star class.

A rod, also known as a perch or a pole, was used by surveyors and is a unit of length exactly equal to five and a half yards.
9. The Kent Group are six islands off the north-east of Tasmania, in the Bass Strait. Which is the largest island in the Kent Group?

Answer: Deal

The Kent Group National Park, of which Deal Island is a part, is Tasmania's most northerly national park. The island, which is nearly six kilometres (three and a half miles) long and four kilometres (two and a half miles) wide, has just two houses on it, which are used by volunteers who take stewardship of the island, dealing with day visitors, conducting seal surveys, as well as maintaining the island's beauty and even assisting in air sea rescues if required.

The Deal was a late 18th and early 19th century unit of volume used in both UK and USA to measure wood, although the deal was different in each country, with an American deal being almost half as big again as a UK deal.
10. In J.R.R. Tolkien's classic "The Lord of the Rings" series of novels (1937-1949), to which race do Frodo Baggins and Samwise Gamgee belong?

Answer: Hobbit

Hobbits are the creatures who manage to bring together the forces of man, elf, dwarf, hobbit and wizard as the Company of the Ring in order to save Middle-Earth from the evil of Sauron. In his books, Tolkien described hobbits as between two and four feet tall, so although plump, they surely wouldn't have weighed much.

A hobbit was a Welsh unit of volume, used mainly for grain, where it was equal to four pecks or two and a half bushels. According to official House of Commons data from 1888, a hobbit of barley weighed 147 pounds and a hobbit of wheat weighed 168 pounds.
