Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Denise Richards played a character with the surname Jones in the James Bond film "The World Is Not Enough". What was the character's first name?

Answer: Christmas

Christmas is a name also given to an island in the Indian Ocean, named on Christmas Day 1643. Although it is an Australian territory, it is not part of that country's migration zone (meaning asylum seekers cannot claim refugee status straight away). An 800-bed Immigration Detention Centre was constructed in 2006 for the Department of Immigration.
2. Sir Pelham Warner was often called "The Grand Old Man of Cricket" but also had a shorter nickname. What was it?

Answer: Plum

Pelham "Plum" Warner was Wisden cricketer of the year in 1904 and 1921. He played first class cricket for Oxford University and Middlesex as well as captaining England. However, he is probably best remembered as the tour manager during the infamous England "Bodyline" Series of Australia in 1932-33, which caused strained relations between the two countries until the second world war.
3. Which Derbyshire settlement, on the River Wye, is the only town within the boundaries of the Peak District national park?

Answer: Bakewell

Bakewell was the focus of media attention during the Stephen Downing case or the "Bakewell Tart" murder. In 1974, a 17-year-old council worker named Stephen Downing was convicted of the murder of a 32-year-old legal secretary in Bakewell cemetery. His conviction was overturned in 2002 due to a long running campaign by the local paper, after Downing had served 27 years in prison.

It is thought to be one of the most serious cases of miscarriage of justice in British legal history.
4. What is the common name for animals of the phylum Porifera?

Answer: Sponge

Sponges are mainly saltwater animals (there are a few freshwater varieties). They do not have a nervous, digestive or circulatory system. Most rely instead on having a constant water flow through their bodies to obtain food and oxygen and to remove wastes. The shape of their bodies is adapted to ensure an efficient flow of water through them.
5. Which English county is sometimes called "God's own country"?

Answer: Yorkshire

Yorkshire is a historic county of England and the largest in the UK. Yorkshire people are sometimes called Tykes and are characterised as being fiercely independent and proud of their county. Yorkshire is a diverse landscape which includes large cities, former coal fields and the beautiful Dales and North Yorkshire Moors.
6. Which British band featured Colin Vearncombe and had a hit with "Wonderful Life" in 1987?

Answer: Black

The band Black have released a number of albums starting with "Wonderful Life" back in 1987. Colin Vearncombe then used his own name for a number of critically acclaimed albums before returning to the band name Black in 2009.
7. What can be a cereal grain or a university in Houston, Texas?

Answer: Rice

William Marsh Rice University was opened in 1912 using money left by the eponymous Mr Rice. Their benefactor had been murdered on September 23rd 1900 and was originally thought to have died of natural causes in his sleep. However, a sharp eyed bank clerk noticed that a very large cheque had been made out in the name of Rice's solicitor Albert T. Patrick. Patrick then disclosed that Rice had changed his will shortly before his death making him the main beneficiary. An investigation soon found that Patrick had planned the death of Rice and that Rice's valet, Charles F. Jones, had given the unfortunate victim chloroform while he slept.
8. Which British TV comedy series was written by Carla Lane and featured the Boswell family?

Answer: Bread

9. Cancer and Leo occur during which season in the Northern Hemisphere?

Answer: Summer

What can I say about summer? It's warm and sunny, unless you live in the United Kingdom where it is wet and cold. The summer solstice occurs on either the 21st or the 22nd of June in the Northern Hemisphere. Er, I think that's it!
10. What is the sweet or savoury link to the previous nine answers?

Answer: pudding

Here's an explanation of the answers to questions 1-9 and their link to pudding:

1) Christmas pudding is sweet and eaten with brandy sauce after Christmas dinner.
2) Plum pudding is another name for Christmas pudding.
3) Bakewell pudding is a regional British sweet pudding made with jam and almonds (not to be confused with Bakewell tart).
