Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I will give you some JELLY (jello in USA) and can you tell me what you can NOT do with it please?

Answer: Nail it to the wall

Jelly was a traditional children's party food in my childhood and always home made. As an occasional treat, my mother would give me a cube of jelly. One of her best recipes was a raspberry jelly with a tin of raspberries mixed into it that was allowed to set before a topping of whipped jelly, made with half and half water and evaporated milk, was added.
2. I am feeling generous today and will give you a SARI. So which of the following can you NOT do with it?

Answer: Eat it

A sari is basically just a long length of cloth wound around the body. As I was raised in the north of England, sari lengths were a common sight. Some of them are beautiful works of art.
3. If you have taken any of my previous quizzes, you may already know that I have a thing for RED SQUIRRELS. What could you NOT do with one?

Answer: Eat it for Sunday lunch or on toast

Fortunately red squirrels are making a slow but steady come-back across the UK. They are smaller than their grey American cousins with larger ear tufts and are much better at hiding. As a protected species they are definitely NOT on the lunch menu.
4. You ought to understand my methods by now! What can you NOT do with a LAZY SUSAN?

Answer: Get it to play a card game with you

The basic design of a Lazy Susan is a a round platter on a turntable. Set in the middle of the table it means that the condiments can be reached by all without repeated requests of, "Pass the salt, please". Of course it can be used for other items too.
5. Let's go shopping now. We are off to visit a MILLINER. So, what can you NOT buy there?

Answer: Cream cakes

A milliner makes and/or decorates hats and will often sell a variety of trimmings too. A fascinator has evolved to become a lady's alternative to a full hat at formal occasions. It can be tiny or large and elaborate. The advantage over the hat is that it does not flatten the hair-do.
6. I am slipping a tricky one in here, you have been warned! If I told you to "DRAW THE CURTAINS", which of the following should you NOT do?

Answer: Start a new project

Curtains, in UK usage, can be the drapes in the home or the large ones used on the stage in theatres. If it is curtains for someone, it usually means their death. You draw with a pencil or crayon.
7. I opened a cupboard and there, sitting on a shelf, was a DEERSTALKER. You know what to do now, pick the thing I can NOT do with it, please!

Answer: Eat it with mixed vegetables and gravy

The Deerstalker hat has become associated with Sherlock Holmes over the years, despite it not being mentioned in the books. It is a practical cap for wearing during country pursuits as it keeps the wearer's head warm, shields him from the sun or wind and helps him to blend into the background.
8. How did that PERUKE sneak into my cupboard? Which of the following could I NOT do with it?

Answer: Feed it bird seed

No, a peruke is not a parrot! It is actually an old style wig, think King Charles 11 and his Cavaliers.
9. MARZIPAN, why on earth did someone think that was a good idea? Now for the real question, what can you NOT do with MARZIPAN?

Answer: Tile the bathroom

Spit, spit, spit! I always binned marzipan as a child or passed it on to my much younger brother and made him eat it for me. The basic flavouring of marzipan is almond. Strangely enough, I used to love the actual nuts, but hated anything made with them with a vengeance.
10. So, what can you NOT do with an EGG?

Answer: Draw with it

Although you cannot draw WITH an egg, you could draw ON an egg.

This question proved the most difficult in the whole quiz as eggs are so versatile. Eggs are a nutritious, easily available and cheap food that can be combined with other foods. The egg shell is so useful too. There are many non culinary uses as well. However, it is not just hens that lay eggs as, among many others, we humans do too and that opens up so many more possibilities.
